What the hell? Doesn't anybody look at their work after they create an article like this? Read more button produces less stuff to read except for annoying ads. Pictures don't change with corresponding Games. I'm getting really tired of articles like this that are poorly created and executed. We shouldn't have to fight with Ads to read the content.

[citation][nom]hmp_goose[/nom]SHOGO! Descent! Hexen!Oni?[/citation]

Descent was amazing, one of my favourite games at the time. Oni sucked, one of only 2 games EVER (the other being the extremely poor Juggernaut expansion for Quake 2) that I have actually taken back to the store for a refund because it was utter poo.

[citation][nom]FunSurfer[/nom]Nice to Know that someone else remembers Blood (I want to donate some blood... somebody elses...) and Shadow Warrior (Do you want to wash Wang or do you want to watch Wang wash Wang) besides me...[/citation]

I loved Blood, think I still have it somewhere, along with the sequel. I laughed like a psycho while lighting people up with the flare gun.

I would really like to see a sequel/remake of Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri. It was very cool and was a reason to get an yamaha XG wavetable daughterboard for my AWE32 soundcard i had back then.

As for games I'd like to see remade, anyone ever heard of Severance: Blade of Darkness? Unfortunately the Spanish developer (Rebel Act) went belly up. The game is one of my favourites of all time and I still play it occasionally, even though it's a decade old. The only thing about it that really needs updating is the graphics engine, everything else about it is awesome and the combat is damn near perfect.

my little brother delete heretic from my computer and format install floppies because he was scared... never finished it :'(

you guys missed the concept here. they dont redo games as they were originally on new engines. they release sequels on new engines. duke nukem forever actually starts out playing the end boss from the first one in a video game in the game itself... plus ... BOOBS! Deus ex human revolution is already out and its load times could make a zen master curse. Die in 2 hits (apparently they can give you a billion dollars worth of prosthetics but cant give you a bullet proof vest) wait almost a full minute for a load screen (and I have an ocz vertx2 SSD btw). Doom had doom3 and possibly doom4 now as a "retelling" of the story. And quake is continuing on from the previous game AFAIK with each new iteration. Its sort of like movies where they dont make the original over again unless someone takes it upon themselves (i.e. rob zombie) to do it ... they just make sequels and reboots.

I LOOOOVED Rise of the Triad .

I was really hoping to see Rise of the Triad on the list. May not have been the most popular FPS on the market at the time, but it is still a classic.

good article -- but seriously TomsHardware you need to do something about the combination of overblown ads wrecking an otherwise good article.

1) for the love of jeebus get rid of the "read more" button. I clicked on the article itself so obviously I want to read it, why do I have to click "read more" 20 times to read what I wanted to read in the first place?

2) Your heart is in the right place but there is nothing quite as annoying as overlay features like your "feedback" tab on the right hand side. When I'm reading an article its annoying as hell having it overlay on what I'm trying to read.

3) The navigation box for articles is total butt - I click it soemtiems it pops up, sometimes it doesnt, this in combination with the 3183 little boxes spread all over the page asking me if I want to share on facebook, share on twitter, share with a friend, share with my elderly mother who is in a wheelchair and doesn't know what electricity is... all very very annoying.

I stopped going to Engadget for similar stuff you know, I realize ads are a necessity, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do them.

I heard someone is making a remake or sequel for Rise of the Triad. Maybe that is why it is not on the list...
But why Bloodrayne is not on the list?!

Tom's hitting rock bottom. The webpage sucks. There are more adds than content. All the adds are messing up the few things that are still worthy. (the adds work fine, the page does NOT, in this case) Not only the ads, but the SHITTY JOURNALISM pushed by misleading articles and sensationalism. That's low, Toms, VERY low. (see the "Is This the iPhone 5's First Photo?" article for example, written by Jane McEntegart)
I've been reading TOM's DAILY since 1998, and damn, how I miss the old days! Back there content was the priority, now, the priority seems to be to write some stupid misterious thing in the headline in order to get people clicking on an article that says nothing.

Toms: shape up and give your readers some respect!

My wife's baby/mom/new parenting sites have better picture article formats than this, get it together Toms!

As for the article itself, I much enjoyed it (Using AdBlock Plus fixes your site dramatically), and it reminded me of some good childhood memories. Only additions I would make would be Oni, Mech Warrior, and Earth Siege.
As someone else mentioned the old Sierra Quest games such as Space Quest, and Kings Quest were awesome, though not FPS. I believe Kings Quest was the first game where you could import a character from a previous game (something that has never really caught on, but is awesome!), and Space Quest was one of the first games where you would play to see just how many ridiculous ways there were to die in the game!

A Thought; how about an article on how to properly use emulators to play these old classic games? I know I keep wanting to break out some classics, but they just refuse to run on newer hardware and software platforms.

This article still isnt working. Nothing happens when pressing "read more" and nothing happens when pressing >

Descent has been improved by 2 different projects: D2X-XL and DXX-Rebirth.
XL has more fancy looking effects, while rebirth makes it work on modern computers with better multiplayer capabilities. There are still people playing multiplayer with rebirth. We'd love more players, so go find a copy (gog.com) and check it out :)
