Can't get the article to work in firefox, chrome, OR internet explorer. Tried it on all 8 computers at our work and no go. 🙁 I was realy looking forward to reading it to.

Just to comment, Eduke32 with HRP makes Duke Nukem 3d look nice (although you might need a hefty card for HD resolutions). It's not that they are using Unreal Engine 3, but the people on Eduke has done a fine job, they deserve their mention on Duken Nukem 3d picture.

descent will always remind me of what it led to, one of my favourite games, arguably the best space-sim out there, FreeSpace 2.

I really wish someday a developer like Dice (or maybe Bungie would be better, since they do sci-fi anyway) would remake it while integrating the Source Code Project and the community. It still looks great and plays well...DX10/11 would make it look awesome.

Played a lot of Quake II, Heretic II, and Shogo. There was a Descent clone that came free with my Riva TNT card... can't remember the name, but they were all on motorcycles, otherwise the same. That game was packed full of sooo many great one-liners in .wav format. I wish I still had it just for that.

This article is flawed. There are remakes already for several of these games. Of the ones there are not, System Shock 1 (though there is System Shock Portable) and Blood probably the ones we need the most along with maybe Shogo. I'd also like a Postal 2 remake but it is still loads of fun, especially with the mod that lets you hack off limbs at precisely where you are aiming. But, Guess what, the article needed to mention there are AMAZING mods availiable NOW that really, really improve or revamp these old games. Let's see, where to start...

DeusEx: Check Moddb, there's a high resolution texture pack available for it plus a model update for it that also adds HDR/Bloom (via ENBseries). I will admit though, DeusEx was a PAIN to mod to get it all to work together. I did it though.

Descent: D2X-XL-- www.descent2.de/d2x.html
Duke3d: There is an Unreal 3 remake in progress and... for now, there is the Duke Nukem HRP project with high-res textures, models and Doom 3 level lighting/shadows etc via Polymer and Eduke32. Go get it now! http://hrp.duke4.net/download.php (be sure to also get the remastered soundtrack via SC-55 on the page -- rename the filename for it to have a "z" as the first letter to get it to work)

Doom: Umm... Snowberry and the Doomsday engine + high res textures and 3d-models (though I prefer the sprites for things like grunts and imps and you can pick and choose). Amazing graphical update. dengine.net Also works for Heretic and Hexen...
Oh, speaking of doom, there is also the Classic Doom 3 remake of Doom 1, Episode 1 for Doom 3 (remastered soundtrack too)... : www.moddb.com/mods/classic-doom-3
Quake 1: Humm... There's Darkplaces engine for Quake and EzQuake... Darkplaces adds stuff like Quake 3 level lighting, bloom/hdr etc. Add in Rygel's Texturepack and

Don't forget Reforged... retextures monsters (looks amazing): quakeone.com/reforged
Shameless plug: Every SUNDAY @ 22:00 GMT (adjust for your timezone), we play the original QuakeWorld Team Fortress online... every weekend, it's a great time. Just load up the browser in Darkplaces and EzQuake and you'll find us.

Quake 2: Berserker Quake 2!!!!!!! This one is totally awesome. Don't forget to pop in your Quake 2 cd to fully enjoy it with the original music by Sonic Mayhem.

There are also weapon model updates for both Quake 1 and 2...

System Shock 2: Such an amazing game... an an amazing re-texture and remodel project. Add in Bloom support (make it subtle) and it looks great.
http://www.systemshock.org has everything you need (as you need to take steps which the hold your hand for to get it to work on modern operating systems) Oh, and if you check out www.ttlg.com/forums... there is info on modding Thief to look better, too.

Unreal: Unreal Re-texturing project. I don't know much about this one though so I can't give much info on it. www.celticwarriors.net/Website/S3TC/S3TC.htm

So there you have it. It should keep you busy all weekend. I'm an obsessive modder so why not share the love, pass this info on. Keep old gaming alive!

I know its not a first person shooter but a remake of Human Head studios "Rune" would be epic.

Same problem and it is getting to be very very annoying with the retarded adds. Who is going to share an article when it is broken? As for the last one that was done in emulator as the map in the lower left hand corner is bugged so it wasn't native 😉 Got it on n64 XD

Bring back the MechWarrior franchise (MS really screwed up, MW2 was my personal favorite - NETMECH)
Rise Of The Triad (Loved the Baseball Bat)
Descent: FreeSpace II (Suprizingly awesome Multiplayer team-play and great level editor)
Zork Series - I just finished "Return To Zork" a couple of weeks ago on DOSBOX. Still rather entertaining.

[citation][nom]agnickolov[/nom] I'd love to see remakes or new installments of Sierra's lines of adventure games (Space Quest, King's Quest, Quest for Glory, etc), Master of Magic, X-COM 1, 2 and 3 (but not the later abominations), ...[/citation]

There is a nice free open source game based on X-COM you can get at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ufoai/

it's really nice.

[citation][nom]iam2thecrowe[/nom]couldnt agree more with heretic/hexen remake. Does anyone remember Rise of the Triad? that was a great FPS at the time.[/citation]

I do..ROTT was awesome..Drunken missle.

I read somewhere that they already are developing a new game on the series.

I sure was a fun game, but in today's extreme politically correct world, I'm sure it will loose a lot on running over people...

Star Trek: Generations needs a remake. Full of movie sequences shot just for the movie, the game's progression was dependent on how you went about engaging in the Stellar Cartography mode meta-game.

Yeah... Bring back Daikatana!! Not!

It was Unreal that made me buy my first true 3d card in 99... The voodoo1 ($125).
There are some omissions.
Tribes - this game had vast maps, good graphics troop transports, etc.
ONI - amazing graphics for it's time, but the developers fracked it up by not having user option keyboard controls. So I couldn't contol the character very well. After a few levels of failing to make jumps, I never played it again.
