[citation][nom]eddieroolz[/nom]Where's increased IPC? Sure, the 3770K beats the 2700K by a small margin, but this doens't seem enough to call it "increased IPC"[/citation]
Increased IPC generally comes from the "tock" cycle, "tick" cycles generally focus on power, and in this case redesign.
I have a funny, funny feeling Haswell will be another SB, then Broadwell will be another Ivy.

Nice article!

AMD struck out with bulldozer...
Intel didn't land the performance needed for SB users to go with IB

Hopefully AMD and Intel will hit big next time!

[citation][nom]tourist[/nom]I was surprised to see it too begin with in the review. But why include it and not run the rest of the benchmarks with the gtx680 ? Sure the value is in the integrated graphics but it is still a 3 ghz 4 core cpu that scales very well. From what i have read you are the Liano expert around Tom's and the Lianos potential has yet to be reached, I would have like to see how much it bottle-necked the 680.[/citation]
This is a fair request. To be honest, the issue was one of time. There were a number of sub-tests I wanted to run on Ivy Bridge, so exploring GTX 680 bottlenecking on Llano wasn't really possible for this story specifically. Should there be an opportunity to incorporate this information into an upcoming piece (think: Trinity ;-), then I'll make sure it happens!

Overclockers = get SB, non-overclockers get IVB.
I don't know that I'd go quite there yet. I've seen some people saying you can overclock IB on an undervolt. If that's true, I can see some people interested in a respectable overclock without increasing power consumption over the stock settings.

[citation][nom]re-play-[/nom]i have seen like 8review about IVY vs FX and the only place iits funny how tomsH keep placing the FX8150 that far behind. even on winrar and winzip where the 8cores shines... that makes me believe that toms hardware some how Tomh should rename the webpage from Tomshardware to INTELHARDWARE[/citation]

The FX 8 core CPUs tend to be behind quad core i7s even in highly threaded work. It's not Tom's fault that Bulldozer based FX CPUs are usually much worse than their competition.

IB has increased IPC over SB. It's not a large increase, but it is an increase nonetheless. Saying that it is not an increase just because it is not a large increase is ridiculous.

all yall do is pick benchmarks that pick on AMD. we know there behind but you dont have to run cataclysm when the engine is 7 years old pretty much.

i think skyrim should be an outlier game anyways because of its terrible support for amd graphics and cpu and you still use it to compair/ average scores. to me this is not fair.

I can run my i7 2600K stable @ 4.4 ghz a hair undervolted. I'm surprised Ivy wasn't easily hitting 5 ghz with the die shrink

TOMS! please try using a temp sensor instead of chip sensor to test heat.. ive been hearing alot of people saying these things get hot with the temp sensors, but when they put a heat sensor near the chip, it doesnt get nearly as hot as readings.. possible temp sensor problems? i dont know, but can you please do an article on this and maybe see if its a problem?

I didn't know that human hair follicles could cool off CPU's.. :p
do you use 'Head and Shoulders' so the dandruff doesn't clog up your 120mm fans.?

Since I don't overclock much, I guess I'll upgrade my Phenom II to Ivy-Bridge. This is of course unless AMD can return to competition with Pile Driver, however unlikely that sounds.

I am in the market for a new rig. I am looking forward to the benchmarking in the coming weeks. Hopefully the folks at Toms will identify the 2500k-ish sweet spot in this lineup (if there is one).

It's funny that everyone is ultrabook crazy right now (probably just marketing hype). For the first time in 10 years I am moving away from the laptop as a primary machine and back to a desktop. I am tired of the handcuffs of the screen size and limited performance for the money. I just spend too much time working on RAW photos and videos of my family. And the storage acrobats that I must go through every couple months as my TB primary fills up is getting old. Yes I am a 30 something husband and dad.

I am really looking forward to 27+ inches of screen real estate on a dual boot Win7 + Hackintosh setup.

My old laptop will be just fine for browsing the web and email. But any heavy lifting is just no longer fun.
