Hi, I have got an Intel HD 4460. So, I guess its time for an upgrade. But, now I am struggling to decide which CPU should I go with?
Some people have suggested that the I3 12100F is currently the best budget CPU [costs about 112 dollars, compared to the region I live in]. But the motherboards supporting the CPU (LGA 1700) are quite expensive. Even the cheapest mobo is about 108 dollars. So, the CPU+Mobo combination costs about 220 dollars. On the other hand, Ryzen motherboards are quite cheaper compared to the Intel ones (about 70 dollars [i.e Gigabyte B450M S2H]). Even though the Ryzen 5500 seems a bad choice, but I can stretch my budget upto 240 dollars, with the combination of Ryzen 5 5600 (non-X) and a cheap motherboard [Ryzen 5 5600 costs 176 dollars]. So overall, the pricing is almost same. Besides, the Ryzen 5 5600 has two more cores and four more threads [Although the Intel I3 12100F has better single core performance].

Its mostly for gaming, even though I occasionally do stuffs on blender and things like decompressing or rendering [not professionally, just as an amatuer]. So now, what should I go with? Ryzen 5 5600 and a cheaper motherboard or Intel I3 12100F? What would be overall a better CPU? Can anybody please suggest me anything?

What GPU are you going to use?

12100F is without graphics, which is why it is cheaper than the 12100. The Ryzen 5600/5500 etc don't have graphics at all.
I currently have an RX 560 4GB version. Even though I am planning to upgrade soon, but its not going to be anything more than an RTX 3050/3060.

Hard to say.

I would probably take the 5600, but also go for a B550 motherboard. Chances are good that AMD will release Zen 4 CPUs for the AM4 socket sometime after the launch of Ryzen 7000. That seems more promising for immediate gains.

Intel does also have the future option of 13th gen, but they may not bother to release the lower end CPUs. They skipped i3 entirely for 11th gen desktop. They could do the same here. But that does mean i5 and up 13th gen chips are a possibility if you get an LGA1700 board today.

B550 motherboards are quite expensive. But I'll look into it. So, Ryzen 5600 seems like a better choice. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Increases the likelihood of the BIOS supporting anything that comes out later. Shockingly a lot of 300 series boards eventually got support for Ryzen 5000, but it did take a while. Not a must if you plan to keep the CPU for a while.

The only benefit to Intel would be the option of moving up to something with E cores later on. But in terms of efficiency between 12th gen P cores and Zen 3 cores, they are about equal.
