Is IceWind Dale II copy protected?

I recently got a used copy of IceWind Dale off of ebay. I tried to make
backup copies of the CDs (A habit I've gotten into that dates back to my
days with an Apple II and 5.25" disks), but I couldn't get it to install
off the backups. I had no trouble installing and running the game with
the origional CD however.

Have I just had the bad luck to have two bad CDs in a row, or is it copy
protected? I don't buy many games, and I haven't encountered something
like this with a CD-ROM before, though I have encountered it many times
with 3.5" and 5.25" disks. As for why I insist on copying it, I've had
too many problems with doing something careless with an exposed CD to
risk an origional that is required to play the game.

It's pretty obvious you don't play many games.

Almost every game has CD copy protection on it. You need special software
to be able to make a copy of it, such as CloneCD or Alchohol 120%. You also
need specific CD-writer hardware, not every brand or model will be able to
do it.

Good luck trying to make backups, it's not easy, even though it should be
possible and it's a good idea. But what I'd really recommend you do instead
is to just install the games and use a no-cd crack so you don't need to
keep the game CD out. Then just put the CD away in a safe place.

Yes, it's protected and it's called CD checks:

Go to www.gamecopyworld.com or www.megagames.com they'll have no-CD
cracks up. I recommend Alcohol 120% (www.alcohol-soft.com) as CloneCD
is no longer in development. You'll need to find out what copyprot
IWD2 uses before using Alcohol, but Gamecopyworld usually lists that
info.

Be aware though, that Alcohol installs a virtual drive on your machine
and newer games will not run until you uninstall all virtual drives
and clean up your registry to remove any left over keys associated
with that software.

Not quite - Daemon Tools has ways around that problem. And makes up to 4
virtual CD-drives. Many games LOOK actively for CloneCD and won't run if
it's installed, but don't mind Daemon Tools.

The name (according to my old math-teacher) stems from the sound the
mathematician who first used the number, made. A bit like "Gollum,
gollum"... :)

I'm a dumbass at maths, but I was told that the figure is 10^10^10.

Starforce DOES mind daemon tools, and will uninstall it on sight - if
they can detect it. Which they can't, at least not if you change the
name of the driver, like daemon tools allow.

That games look for and disable clonecd is just bizarre, as clonecd no
longer does 1:1 copying. Then again, some versions of starforce will
deliberately crash Nero, so illogical and borderline illegal
overreacting is not new to starforce.

Fun Fact of the Day: In exit polls at the election 2004 the percentage of American
voters citing moral and ethical values as their prime concern was 22 percent,
continuing a trend of *decreasing* perceived importance of morals: In the 2000
election 35 percent cited morals & ethical values as their prime concern, and in
1996 a whopping 40%, almost twice as many as in 2004.
(Bet you hadn't gotten that impression from the press, had you?)

It wasn't. The guy who 'invented' it asked his 8 year old nephew
to name it.

Hmmm, wonder why my windows calculator stops at 10^43429 - add one more
exponent digit & it overflows...come on, let's see who's windows
architecture top gun around here (I use an AMD 64-bit CPU) :)

Don't really use Daemon Tools anymore, I just look for No-CD's. I did
have a problem with Alcohol and FarCry though, had to uninstall and
run a regcleaner to get the damn thing to work.

I thought that Elby stopped development of CloneCD, what other
features have they removed from it?
