Hey all. I recently got the itch to upgrade my GTX 1070 + Ryzen 5 2600X setup to something more recent, and would love some input since I've been completely oblivious to the hardware scene for the past 4-5 years. I'm not even sure if this is a good time to pull the trigger, or if I should wait for new releases.

My primary purpose would be gaming @ 1080p @ 144Hz; I'm into playing all kinds of AAA titles and would like something that would last me atleast 4-5 years. With that in mind, I've been eyeing the Ryzen 5600X + RTX 3070/3080 combo even though I'm not even sure if I will see much of a performance gain @ this resolution. I can afford either [3080 + 5600X] or [3070 + 5800X3D] but probably not both [3080 + 5800X3D].

My current specs:

MB - MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC
GPU - EVGA GTX 1070 8GB
CPU - Ryzen 5 2600X
Cooler - Cryorig H7 Tower Cooler
RAM - G.Skill 16GB (8GBX2) DDR4 3200 MHz
PSU - Corsair TX650M 650 Watts Gold
Case - NZXT H500
Monitor - Acer XB241H 144Hz G-Sync @ 1080p

  • Is an upgrade to [5600X + 3070/3080] from [2600X + 1070] worth it at this point in time? Pls do suggest other models if they seem like a better fit.
  • My current B450 MB should work fine with the new CPU after a BIOS update, right?
  • PSU & cooler good enough?

Thank you for taking the time to read through, have a good one! :)

Honestly, even a 3060Ti would likely be enough for you for quite some time. But yeah, the 3080 would definitely be overkill. And yes, unless you play with an FPS lock, you will see quite a bit more FPS, my FPS (at 1440p) more than doubled switching from my 1070 to my 3070Ti.
Since you want to stick with your current AM4 platform, new releases wont matter in your case, unless you want to wait for price drops after AM5 launch. That is not guaranteed though and historical trends do not show any clearer picture. A BIOS update should work with that board.

Since you are aiming for 1080p gaming, a 3070 will be plenty good for you. you will not get any significant difference with a 3080 here but a stronger CPU can be beneficial, specially for CPU demanding games and there are a lot of them. I would try to get a 5800x/5800x3D for longevity and better performance along with 3070/3080 whatever you can get.

Thank you for your inputs. I really wanted to get the 5800X3D but its price is quite inflated where I live; it's therefore extremely hard to justify the gain for the price. Add to that the fact that it's quite a hot chip and that I'd have to definitely get atleast a $100 air cooler, I've decided that it's not worth it right now for me. I'm going to be buying a 5600 instead (non X most likely because GamersNexus Jesus says the X isn't worth the extra few $) along with a 3060Ti for the time being, with the intention of dumping the latter in a few months in order to upgrade to a RTX 4070 whenever possible.
