I'm working on a particular case mod, and unfortunately I've come to the conclusion that a normal desktop DVD-RW drive just wont fit. I have to think smaller, so a laptop drive was the next obvious conclusion. The interface on laptop DVD-RWs is listed as IDE but, I'm assuming it's not the same IDE interface as on desktop boards. How would I go about interfacing the drive, if possible?

Yes, it's standard IDE, just uses smaller pins on a smaller connector. You can get a 3.5" to 2.5" hard drive adapter from Compgeeks for around $4 that has the smaller IDE connector. Now to figure out if the drive you're considering uses the standard connector or a flat ribbon insert...

I'm not certain, it looks like some kind of Centronix plug. The adapters I spoke of were 40-pin to mini 40-pin, so they wouldn't be for any other interface. Perhaps theres a different adapter?

Oh, the min 40-pin connectors have extra pins for power right next to the interface pins.
