You'll do custom install. Windows (and Apple, perhaps even more) caters to the non-computer types. They probably WON'T do custom installs.

If MS removed software NOT their own, that would be criminal mischief in my book. This wouldn't be grounds for complaint; it would be grounds for civil action. Killing Media Center doesn't count, as it's their own product.

There are much bigger issues. Like the data mining of users. Have you read the official list of data that gets collected and transmitted to MS? Passwords (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), emails (!!!!!!!!!!!!), instant messages (!!!!!!!!!!), your name, address, EVERYTHING.
Why isnt anyone complaining about that? Are they all braindead? Nobody has learned anything from the last 2 years?
Unbelievable...
Are you using Google products? Because if your response is "Yes", I can't understand your complains, seriously.

Google is the biggest brother out there.

I am trying to avoid it where I can, and thats far easier than having a OS for work and personal life that is spying on you like that.
But your argumentation is interesting. Just because there are others out there that do similar things (which you can avoid far easier, since there are alternatives, especially since 2 years ago), its ok for MS to do it aswell and ever worse?
Thanks for that insight, because it and people voting you up on that, makes obvious to what kind of people I am talking. People who only cause this crap, because they think they cant change it or actually dont care.

Anyone using a smart phone has already fallen victim to these tactics. Why no animosity toward Apple and Google???
How do you know I am not? This article is about MS. WTF is wrong with you people jumping on others? Are you all fanboys who just feel attacked? My god...

I sort of see both sides to it. It would be nice if m.s. asked prior to automatically switching to edge. Though other programs often associate themselves as the default unless unchecked during the custom install process also. If someone is such a casual user that they're confused how to change the browser default preferences it's likely it doesn't matter which browser they use. Who cares if it's chrome, ff etc. Those companies aren't getting paid for their software anyway. If another browser truly has an advantage beneficial to say a power user in terms of addons or extensions etc they're probably savvy enough to quickly reset their default browser preferences.

It would be another story entirely if m.s. did something in the way they coded windows that actually hampered use of chrome or firefox (or whatever else people prefer). Something that broke their code or something.

I'm not happy about data mining either but it's everywhere. In the u.s. they're allowed to collect your newborn's dna without parental consent when the baby is born, so it starts from birth now. Smart phones collect data, google collects data, tv companies like cable and satellite monitor viewing habits, it's literally everywhere. The only way to escape it is to disconnect and cut the cord completely.

I watch fox news and I'm pretty sure you don't even have half the experience or technical know-how that I do. Truly brilliant for you to bash the majority of people who don't have the same political view as you or Jon Stewart and the rest of the heavily liberal biased media who would rather talk about BS racial issues or a dead lion rather than things like planned parent hood selling aborted fetuses which is not only disgusting but illegal.

Maybe they are worried because Firefox is becoming obsolete with Chrome being better, Mozilla haven't helped themselves as they haven't improved Firefox, I still use Firefox but only because I don't like using to many google products 😀

You watch Fox??? LOL. So i'm guessin you either didnt see (because fox wont show it) or are choosing to ignore the fact that the pp video was cut. The full unedited video shows the lady saying they dont make profit. They give to research for free and only ask the receiver to pay the cost of storage and shipping.

It's annoying...but people should also learn to use the internet and learn to read the English on their screens. No pity if you fail to figure out some settings. Don't upgrade your OS if you 're a technological dope.

See what you did microsoft? You changed a default browser setting and waged a planned parenthood war, brought jon stewart into the mix, race issues and a poached lion to boot. The chain reaction to such careless changes in software settings is phenomenal. Butterfly effect in progress lol.

I must have missed it when Mozilla/firefox bought google. 😉 And what you do in your OWN product is not the same as this. It is not firefox's job to use any particular search engine, well, unless someone pays them I guess. You might have an argument if when installed it magically switched your IE search engine IN IE (or edge, whatever) to google. What mozilla does to themselves is their business. What microsoft does to Mozilla however...

Firefox doesn't own yahoo though...Microsoft does...LOL. Not quite the same thing right?

There's 4 vids now... 😉 "I want a Lamborghini"...LOL. It gets worse, but I want one too, so that was pretty funny (not watched on fox). Doc discussing Per body part to get more $$? Altering the procedure to get more good parts (illegal BTW)? I digress...I was pretty disgusted by what I saw, and don't care one bit what YOU do with your body, just don't use my tax dollars to get it done because I want a Lambo myself :)

I thought this post was about firefox/microsoft...ROFL.

MAYBE if you leave Cortana on there is datamining. Otherwise, not in the slightest.

So the EU should just repeat its 2013 fine on Nadella's Microsoft for trying to circumvent anti trust laws:

"The European Union fined Microsoft Corp 561 million euros ($731 million) on Wednesday for failing to offer users a choice of Web browser, an unprecedented sanction that will act as a warning to other firms involved in EU antitrust disputes."
They try that again and Microsoft might pull out of the EU totally. Companies are getting seriously sick and GODdamned tired of being hassled for things that any NORMAL OS company does.
It is NOT that hard to use Edge or Internet Explorer to download Firefox or Chrome or Opera or any of the numerous other choices for web browser out there.

Has anybody here looked into the privacy stuff about windows 10? I mean they aren't even agreeing to aggregate your personal information and make it anonymous before they sell it to advertisers. It also has a lot of really scary things that it collects form you by default, even connecting to random unsecured wifi connections by default, and sharing your wifi password with your contact list by default. Not all of these things can even be turned off either.

Every keystroke is sent to Microsoft. I have logs to prove it.

To block it all, download PeerBlock and install.

Goto iblocklist.com , search through 'Lists', and then Organization. In there you will find 'Microsoft'. Copy the link to add the list to your PeerBlock. Name it as MS etc. Click 'save', Peerblock will fetch the well-known MS IP block ranges, and will stop you communicating your each and every keystroke, or program-opening to MS.

I will not be 'upgrading' to Win 10. I only have spyware on my spare machine.

This is monitoring that Google would be proud of...

Please post these logs. I tried and was getting nothing in Firefox. Edge had some, but I kind of expect it since the browser is still in development. Is it a keylogger? We need some proof. Also live tiles add hits as well.

Between live tiles / search suggestions / check for updates and half the other cloud based stuff, I can see lots of traffic heading to MS.

I would like to see what traffic is actually key logging and what traffic is statistics/telemetry/services

Post them then. I seriously doubt that you actually have any proof that "Every keystroke is being sent to Microsoft!" because other news organizations have looked and said "You spouting bullplop!" on that subject.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSZ04AZhyM4&feature=youtu.be

This debunks the whole nonsense about there 'being a keylogger' in Windows 10. It's nonsense. The ONLY time keylogging is done is when you use the Touchscreen Keyboard.

totally bogus accusation. I just installed windows 10 and it took 1 minute to download, install and make chrome my default browser with not a hiccup. I'm really not a Microsoft fanboy but when I read this I had to speak up.
Microsoft should sue for defamation.

Does anyone actually read the install messages? It TELLS you that it is going to set Edge as the default browser if you continue with the "Express" install and don't click the link to customize options. If you do click that link, you can review and modify all of your settings very easily and obviously during the upgrade.

If you are one that just clicks "next" without reading, then you are exactly the kind of person who Microsoft wants to protect by defaulting things like defender, etc. to be known (to them) as secure.

It's funny how the OSS people come in and try to preach to us how proprietary software is evil always inferior to OSS (particularly FOSS). You're not making your side look any better you know.

Besides that, even if you use FOSS on your computer, everything else is either proprietary or you can't really trust them anyway.

Probably beating a dead horse but yeah it's definitely not that hard to change and Edge isn't bad. As a long-time chrome user, the only thing I'd prefer is to be able to use Edge but with google as the default search engine instead of Bing. Or is that possible? Honestly I've not even checked haha

well Mozilla, come up with a better OS than Windows and you won't have to worry anymore.

Firefox was still installed and my metro tile was still there after the upgrade. You should know that you have to set a lot of your defaults again if you've ever installed Windows before.

All the power users couldn't care less about a few clicks but we get the principle. Bing just needs to die in general. You have to consider all the old ladies who won't be able to change their search and get bad results. These bad results can lead to bad websites that have threats or just not the right information leading to a bad time. I support Mozilla but it kind of is them whining a bit. Waterfox all day.
