mmm nice mod... While your GPU cooler is way bigger than my stock sapphire one, my RAMSINKS are bigger than yours *tease*

Plus mines a R9800pro so it naturally runs faster

Jolly Good show all the same! Enjoy!

c0d1f1ed its not about the performance or practicality. It's just fun to do projects like that, modding the equipment and making it work is the point. Thats what makes us geeks!

Actually it's more along the lines of 18%, and 9% (gpu, mem). And hey, go suck a c*ck fargot. Like the man said, its FUN, its a HOBBY, and believe it or not, it is noticeable. Quite noticeable.

Agreed. But if we attach heat sinks to the side of his neck...will he be able to suck a c*ck at a higher frequency? And if so...should we use silver or default grease?

Sure, but I can drill holes in it, glue other chips on it and call it art. That's fun too! Ok it doesn't work any more then.

Serious now. I understand modding and geeky stuff, but speeduk's mod looks like a waste of time to me. It's just my opinion, so don't shoot me, but I've seen more interesting mods. What also worries me is that he can potentially damage his stuff like this and totally void his warranty. Maybe it's just poor me, but I don't do that kind of stuff to perfectly working expensive equipment for just 3% performance increase...

Yeah well I happen to know exactly what I'm doing. And the warranty was voided when the previous user put a water block on the gpu. Seriously though what can go wrong with my mod? Its epoxied (using the strongest mix) to the shim, which wont come off unless you use a lot of force i.e take a razor blade, pry it under and twist it off. And its also supported by a big screw wedged between the heatsink and the side of the case.

And BTW I bought this card second hand to do stuff like this.... Only set me back £100 so if it breaks (which it wont) its easily replaced.

Anyway I like the feeling of taking a risk like this because when it works and I get the extra performance (0.000001% or 3% or whatever) for free and a little of my time it feels great. And also it runs a LOT cooler like this, prolonging the life of the gpu at this speed. And it looks phucking awesome so :p...

:) Good luck! BTW I just did a few runs of 3dmark to see what the perf dif actually is and heres what happened:

Clocks set to 382/350 and 370/342...

GT1 low detail 224fps inc to 231fps
GT2 low detail 351fps inc to 363fps
GT2 High detail 181fps inc to 187fps
Overall 17,990 inc to 18,390.

Even in the high detail test it runs 6fps faster at this speed. In the low detail tests an extra 7-12fps is pretty good. More than worth 40 minutes of my time and didn't cost me a penny.... Did I mention it looks awesome too? Hehe...

Shiver. Reminds me of a friend of mine who made a hole in the top of his case with a hand-saw and without making it smooth with a file. Sure, he got his case temperature down, but it looked ugly as hell.

Well, I'm a programmer, and I don't waste my time on an optimization that results in 3% performance increase. Sure, I do have to work step by step, but in the end I'm always aiming for at least 50% performance increase...

But it's your card and if you like it, great for you.

Ah ok so I didnt get a 50% perf increase. Silly me. Why do I overclock again? :/ I'm talking about maxing every component in my system while not going over the edge for maximum performance. Thus achieveing 50%-200% perf increase....

but in the end I'm always aiming for at least 50% performance increase...
BTW you dont work for nvidea do you? ROFL...... J/K

it's true he only increased performance by a little bit but now his card's running much much cooler, therefore it'll live longer so it's really worth it. I don't know about you but I would rather keep a card for 12 months instead of 3 months.

My ramsinks are mainly for improved thermal stability... not absolute OC.

You realize thats not the 9700 Pros STOCK speed, the real perf. increase is much greater when compared to stock. Thats just the increase over his unmodded OC speeds. You're not seeing the whole picture:)

And ill agree, that 300fps is not better than 250fps, in any given game. The thing is when you push your stuff to the limit, and play at the highest settings possible while JUST staying playable in intensive parts, THATS when it makes a BIG difference. A 10% perf. increase when you're playing on the edge can make all the diff.

Ex: With the Cat. 3.4s, I would play ut2k3 inferno with 12 bots at 1024x768, 6xAA, 16x Quality Aniso. Sure I have a kick ass system, but you get up in someones face with a minigun while theyre shootin u with somethin', your FPS is gonna drop (there are just certain inefficiencies in the engine)!! But going from stock to OCd speeds, in this situation made a BIG difference for me! It was more playable, more of the time.

Now it's even more playable with the Omega Cat. 3.7s. Surprising difference in certain areas going from 3.4 to 3.7, as AA in ut2k3 was one highly improved area.

And uh.... now I think I can say that UT2k3 is always playable at 1024x768 6xAA 16x Qual. Aniso (at ocd speeds and with 3.7s), in the standard maps (random maps that people make and remakes are often badly designed and run comparatively poorly).

Keep in mind "playable" means different things. I wan't dual minigun battles to be possible! My friends play at settings such that dual minigun battles (or link gun or whatever [hardcore]) become unplayable - and therefore its quite easy for me to kill them:)

Sorry I told you to suck a c*ck c0d1f1ed:(
I've got somewhat of a stick up my ass right now because I'm totally loaded with school work, that I can't even concentrate on because this damn chick at my school decided to go and make me fall in LOVE with her! Sh*t.

Hey Speeduk I did a little research on overclocking a 9700pro and found out you can get much better contact by removing the shim under the heat sink. (it was easier then I would have thought) removed all the yellow thermal paste they use and went with artic silver3. With the improved contact and articsilver3 I incereased my overclock. Worked for me ...
