I do 90% of the kills, is this why my Merc levels up much slower than me? If
I don't do most of the shooting, she will die.
SP, normal level

The things that affect this are the mercs lvl, the level of the monsters
being killed (need to be close to the merc's lvl for best xp),
whether the merc does the kill, and whether you are in a party (merc
doesn't get credit for other party kills).

Overall, merc leveling is painfully slow prior to about merc lvl 25,
but after that it seems like they just keep pace with you without
fuss for the most part. For a merc type that can be hired on
different levels, there is a tiny stat bonus to hiring them
on the lower difficulty level. So my rule of thumb would be

Rogue - just hire on NM

Act3 - you can tough it out from 18-25, especially since
the low killing ability of this merc will have you toughing
it out for much longer anyway:)

Barb - can be hired at lvl 25 or higher.

Act 2- if you want the HF or Might merc from NM anyway there
is not much point worrying about the leveling the one from
Normal. If you want the Defiance or
BA one from Norm, then it will take a lot of patience to baby
them up to lvl 25. Best to solo on stuff at their level and let
them make the kills. Getting them an enhanced damage, enhanced
speed pike as soon as possible really helps!

IMO mercs from Act 1 and 3 level up the slowest. If you're intent on
keeping her but don't want to go slow enough for her to do most of the
killing early on, just hire a new one when you get to NM. She should be a
little more useful then as well :)

I'm at Act 4, maybe I will wait to NM. I have all this Amazon stuff save and
she can't level up fast enough to use it. So to make this clear, the Merc
has to make the kill to get the points? And Act 1 is the only place to get
an Amazon Merc.

no, either you or the merc has to make the kill, if you kill the merc gets a
% of the exp(not sure the ratio), if he/she kills it gets more.. although
usually your higher kill speed should outweigh this %, especially if you
know the places to power lvl(cow, baal at appropriate lvls). and the act1
mercs arent amazon, they are rogues... they cant use amazon only equipment..

To keep the merc leveling at a decent rate, make sure that the mlvl /
alvl (monster level / area level) is no more than five greater than or
less than the merc's lvl. I find that 1-3 greater alvl than merc lvl
seems to give the best results....but that's my subjective view which I
haven't bothered checking details on.

Some areas that i use to give mercs levels in Normal incl:

Arcane Sanctuary (alvl 14)

Fake/Real Tal Rasha's Tombs (alvl 17)

First 3 primary areas of Act 3 (alvl 21-22)

Durance lvls 2&3 (alvl 25)

Normal Cows (alvl 28) - When I solo clear a one player Normal cows and
my mercs at least 23-24 lvl, they seem to gain one level/cow level
cleared until 28th lvl.

If I decide to keep an Act 1 or 2 merc from Normal, I usually play my
character deep into Act 5, which puts them at clvl 30+, then go back and
level the merc using the above areas as needed. I tend to do almost all
of the killing as it's much faster than having the merc kill things.

As someone else pointed out, once your merc gets into the upper 20s,
they seem to start to lvl at a good clip, providing you're actually
playing the game and not getting rushed. ;-)

One final trick I'll admit to having used on Battlenet....create a game
with a name that will attract rushers in order to boost the XPs my merc
gets from my kills. (note that kills made by other party members, while
giving you XPs, give zero XPs to your merc) Example: I want to run my
merc through the Arcane Sanctuary and the fake Tal Rasha tombs... create
a game named "Act 5 GO GO GO". Voila! Big party game....if the rushers
get annoying with the requests to join them...you can always squelch
them. 🙂 Don't fear them hostiling you either....rushers tend not to
find me in a fake tomb or the Great Marsh...."Where the &#^$&^ are you?"
they stupidly ask. heh.

make sure you are in the right area to level up. If you are too far off
level-wise, you won't get as many exp. points. Look here:

http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=512

So, if your merc is about level 20, you should be fighting in Normal Act3,
even if your char is level 30. With that kind of level difference as an
example, you should be able to do /players 8.

Oliver

Hit the "enter" key first, which draws up a box that you can type
"/players 8" into. And hit it again after you've typed that.

mercs level slowly until about level 25, then they tend to keep up easily.

My level is 27, merc is L12 and I in Act 5. Should I go back to Act 4? as
the strategy chart suggests?
Also, when I type /players 8 I don't see anything happening except at the
"a" the character tree comes up and at "s" the skill tree come up.

Merc level 12, then i suggest some sewers runs untit 15-16, then tomb
runs until around 20, then flayer jungle for a couple fo level and then
3-5 levels in act 4.

After that i do blood runs and crystaline runs until merc is level 35-40
and i just move on and the merc always catch me.
