my brother gave me a dell dimension 4700 for christmas. it was a left over from his business. so he asked me to wipe the hard drive in case there were any files that should not have been seen on it. so i did a complete reinstall of windows xp home on the machine with the included disc. everything seems to work ok. but i cant' get explorer to connect to the internet. i pull up my connections and it shows that i'm connected, but nothing. i know that the connection is good because i'm typing this up on my old computer and there is no problem. i've tried the internet connection wizard and every other wizard there is but still i get nothing. has anyone ever seen this before. i haven't been able to find a solution for this through google or the search function on this site. thanks in advance.

You have a nice machine for the price.

This feels like IE got corrupted somehow during the install. You didn't say you were successful Activating when you came near the end of the install.

I would chkdsk this drive - right click the "C" drive - Properties - Tools - Error checking. Check both boxes, then reboot to invoke the utility. Takes 30-45 minutes depending on size.

When you get the desktop back, print out the report: Control Panel - Admin Tools - Event Viewer - Application. Look for Winlogon near the top. Open it; click the clipboard; exit out. Open your word processor, or Notepad and Paste. Print this out. If it reveals bad spots, that may be the reason for the corruption. If it's clean, I would do the install over.

I recommend zeroing the two partition sectors where file records are kept. This takes one minute using debug.exe. After that, you do a fresh install, and let XP partition and format the drive.

Load debug.exe onto a boot floppy. You can Google it to find a download for it.

Boot to an "A" prompt using the floppy. Type debug.

You will get a minus sign cursor. Type the following carefully, paying attention to spaces and noting what looks like the number zero is indeed the number zero, and NOT the letter O. Hit Enter after each line.

f 200 L200 0
a 100
mov ax,301
mov bx,200
mov cx,1
mov dx,0080
int 13
int 3
(hit Enter one more time here)
g=100
q

Remove the floppy. Put in your XP cd, and fire up the install.
