Please see requested completed template below regarding new laptop recommendations.
In a nutshell, I want to learn to code (again – java/perl 15 years ago…). I’d like to learn python, javascript, how to write and use APIs, as well as mess around with my raspberry pi. This is part hobby, part career option exploring.
1. What is your budget?
£600 max.
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
13.3” (33.8cm) diagonal, but less <16.5” diagonal
3. What screen resolution do you want?
Not a major priority – but needs to be decent enough so I don’t go mad/blind after staring at it after hours of coding
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portable.
5. How much battery life do you need?
Better than average as I will be commuting with it.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
No.
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
I want to learn to programme (e.g. python); Do analytics stuff – SQL, tableau, tableau prep, etc; Learn to write and run APIs (and all that entails); Raspberry pie stuff (e.g. including the electronic, physical world stuff).
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
The bigger the SSD, the less the HDD (correct?)
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
UK based, unless great deal on international delivery
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
At least 4 years (but not a deal breaker)
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Not a priority
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
This is what I come to you for input in. I want to avoid crap brands, obvs. I have been happy with HP in the past.
13. What country do you live in?
UK
14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
RAM: 8GB ram is minimum; preferably 16gb.
Needs to be SSD (at least 256GB)
Processor: i5 min; i7+ preferably
I like the idea of a touch screen, one that both a pen and a finger works on, but not a deal breaker.
