New Netgear WNDR3700 Cannot Access Internet

Hello forum,

My new router is driving me nuts. My old router (a dlink dir-615) works just fine, but I figured I would upgrade and try to run OpenWRT or DD-WRT so that I could have one VPN for all my devices.

Anyway, I took the router out and followed the instructions (power off modem for at least 1 minute, connect modem to router, router to computer via ethernet, turn on modem first, wait for it to fully boot up, turn on router, wait for it to fully boot up, and then run the setup on routerlogin.net. The router is currently setup and I can connect my computer or iphone to it just fine, but I cannot access the internet. It doesn't make a difference whether I'm connected via ethernet or wifi. Either way, I get a "No Internet Access" message from Windows 7.

I've tried turning everything off and starting again. No luck. When I go back to my dlink router, everything works fine again.

Any ideas on what I should try?

So, in short:
Modem + ethernet = internet
Modem + Netgear router + ethernet = no internet
Modem + Netgear router + wifi = no internet
Modem + Dlink router (wifi...haven't tried ethernet) = internet

Can you post the Netgear setup (LAN setup, dhcp setup) etc.?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, but all of them are "detect automatically."

What are the Netgear IP Address, Subnet, Gateway, DNS? This info is in the LAN settings of the Netgear. Also do you have DHCP turned on in the Netgear? Post a screenshot if possible. It will be very helpful.

Just under your LAN TCP/IP settings there is a setting "Use Router as DHCP Server". If you have the same setting enabled on your modem, that's what's causing your problem.
Have a look at your modem's LAN settings.
If you do have it enabled then you will have to disable DHCP on one of the two.
After doing so you will need to assign an IP address, a Gateway and DNS.
The IP address you assign it must be in the range of addresses the DHCP server is issuing (somewhere between Start and Ending IP addresses).
The Gateway address is the IP address of your Modem (find that in modem LAN settings). The DNS address(es) are also your modem's IP address. So you must have your modem's address as Gateway and DNS on the router. You should find Gateway and DNS under WAN Settings.
If you have any difficulty doing it post more screen-shots of modem and router LAN/WAN Settings.

How do I access my modem settings? The only thing I've ever done with it before is just plug the computer directly into it and it worked. I have to admit that I didn't even know it had settings that I could access.

You do get internet when you connect to modem with ethernet cable right?
Connect your pc to modem via ethernet. Check network settings on your pc under Status > Details. There you will see your IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS. The Gateway address is your modem's IP. Type the IP into the address bar of your browser and hit enter. The modem configuration will display. Enter username and password to access settings.
