NVArmor and Firewalls, etc

Just ordered a new system (finally) and went all out with the NForce4 SLI
Asus board. Now, I would like to keep my system as clean as possible as my
old machine is really bogged down using Norton Security Suite. Norton has
firewall, anti-virus, pop-up blocker, anti-spam and spyware killer, but it
seems to turn my pc into molasses. Some digging seems to show that this is
consistent with other user's experience with Norton, but it was nice to have
to buy only one package for everything. It sounds like NVArmor is one way
to minimize the overhead, but what's the best way to get total protection?
Is it a matter of piecemealing different aspects of protection? Say,
McAffee for virus, NVArmor for firewall, XP for pop-ups, etc? What do you
use?

TIA,

Dark Helmet

P.S. One last question: I do have a firewall built into my router, why even
bother with NVArmor or Norton or whatever for that purpose?

If you're using a router already, about the only reason to use a
firewall on the machine would be if you want functionality to control
which programs can access the Internet, etc.

I use the following:
Firewall - Kerio Personal Firewall. (I used to use Zonealarm until an
update killed Yenc files downloaded from newsgroups.)

Antivirus - AVG free edition. (I've tried others but this catches
everything and I'm carefull what I download and open.)

Popup - Don't use anything but IEs built in popup now. I used to use
Proxomitron.

Antispam - I'm lucky that my ISP catches most of it but I used to use
mailwasher.

Spyware - Spybot S&D It doesn't get rid of everything* but finds
whatever's on my system.

*Some spyware is sneaky and you need to get rid of it by starting in safe
mode and manually deleting files and registry entries.

I used to use Norton but gave up when they had the problem of screwing up
your install of Windows and leaving you with no option but to format and
install again. Also know people who still use it and it "can" be sluggish
unless you have a pretty fast machine.

If you have a router, then you don't need a Firewall on your PCs.

AntiVirus, I use Symantec Corporate. I'd also recommend
http://www.kaspersky.com/

To avoid popups and spyware, simply don't use IE. Use something like
http://www.firefox.com/ instead. Sweep your machine periodically with
AdAware and Spybot though, cos some spyware enters your machine when you
install certain software.

Ensure you set AutoUpdates to ON.

That's basically all there is to it !
