Crap I heard they got a card to 2.9Ghz with a custom overridden firmware on the card.

Does the throttling on the FE affect the visual fidelity at all? I might have to get a FE soon if no custom cards become available in the next month and then add another in SLI later if VR proves too demanding.

Edit: Ya, the difference between 1800 and 2100 is pretty large.

indirectly by forcing you to lower settings, because it cannot maintain boost clocks

It was the HOF card with custom bios, custom PCB and LN2. They got it to 2.8GHz stable. Doesn't look like anything like it will be hitting consumer market anytime soon. That's probably why the kingpin card isn't out yet.

But if you wait till then you run the risk of then putting off the purchase due to a 1080ti announcement lol. Then you just enter this vicious cycle of putting off cards. Nek minet, you're stuck with your 1.4Ghz 980 while we all running on 4Ghz GTX 1380's

What's a HOF card please?

2.8GHz though. Talk about holy grail.

it is a custom cooled card made by galax

now this is a sharp looking waterblock. http://videocardz.com/61219/byksi-releases-custom-water-block-for-colorful-igame-gtx-1080

@U6b, the HOF card is not out yet but it is usually one of the top performing oc cards. if it has a custom bios which is looking more and more likely based on the leaks of high oc clocks, then it will be a solid performer when it hits. won't hit 2.8 ghz of course but would be higher than what we have seen so far with max oc of around 2-2.1 ghz

here is a very interesting comparison of the last 6 generations of x80 nvidia cards (480-1080). newly benchmarked for your viewing pleasure http://www.techspot.com/article/1191-nvidia-geforce-six-generations-tested/

As an owner of a 980 SLI setup playing at 1440p, I can safely say that I'll be waiting for a ti model or just whatever comes next, because any single card in the new generation so far hasn't been shown to beat the FPS that I'm getting at 1440. I'd lose money selling the 980's, and end up with less performance.

In your situation - it's a tough call honestly. If all you need is 60 fps, wait for the 1070's when they become more widely available in a couple of months. If you need 60+ at 1440p, like I do, then you might want to consider another 980 since it will be far cheaper and in most situations outperform a single 1080, albeit with all the caveats that come with using a multi GPU setup.

As a newcomer to SLI when I finalized my rig early this year I wasn't sure how I would like it, but it's been a great experience so far. I truly dont understand why so many people demonize it; it works in almost all the games I play regularly, and in the ones that don't it only takes 1 card to run it anyway. You will get a lot of opinions on using a multi GPU setup however (scroll back several pages in this thread to see a lengthy discussion about it).

I have another question - I think I have a basic understanding of what memory bus is, but how much is really needed on modern games? Does it vary depending on the resolution/details?

I ask because the 980ti has 384 bit as opposed to the 1070/80 256 bit. So is 256 enough for the foreseeable future? Has the memory speed and other components in modern graphics cards advanced to the point where the memory bus isn't really a bottleneck once you get to 256?

Agreed, I can't find any buyers. Most knowledgeable people are waiting on the RX480 before making a decision. 1080ti might be the card to wait for if any of the rumors regarding a GP102 are true.

One of The main advantages of the 1080 vs the 980 SLi is the extra VRAM...

Many recent games use more than 4 gb of VRAM at 1440p...

I've heard this put forth before, and I'm not saying it's not accurate, but I haven't experienced running out of VRAM at 1440p...are there any well known examples of this? I'm finishing up expansions on FA4 and TW3 and have no problems with max details at 1440p.

Since Custom 1080 cards still have yet to be truly available in any retail establishments, what is the exact roll-out date, in everyone's minds?

I struggle to find any stock available online. Was there a part that might have been delayed which has kept any of the manufacturers from releasing their Custom variants?

I find it a little frustrating, seeing as though it's nearly a month since the 1080 was announced and that Manufacturers of custom variants said they would have stock.

Just not sure what's happening.

as has been noted a number of times, industry info is that by mid july stocks should level off and cards should be readily available. it's not unusual for stocks to be low as demand is very high. think about the new iphones every year. they make 300 million for launch and of course people want 500 million. it's not possible to make enough for every single person on the planet that wants one to have one on day one.

Thank you for the reply. I hadn't seen any previous notes about the July stock availability, I appreciate the info.

Regarding low availability and high demand however, I think that is being generous. I believe the word "low" is overreaching, since based on my access to distributors such as Ingram and TechData, I have never seen more than 100 cards on order for stock availability over the last month. This tells me that retailers such as Newegg, Amazon, B&H and the like have never received more than several hundred or so units in total since release. This seems to point to the fact that manufacturers such as MSI, EVGA and ASUS etc, have not yet released, or even produced, more than a few hundred cards combined.

Whether this is due to late production of Nvidia components or simply poor preparation, it is unlike any graphics card release I've seen previously. To me it seems as though the announcement of the new 1080 was meant as a way to shock sales of any competitive AMD product (though not technically on the same performance level currently) while drawing attention to the Nvidia cards before they were even ready to be released.

Please excuse my frustration, I simply don't see how this compares to the iPhone releases. Yes, Apple makes 300mil phones for a need of 500mil. It appears as though Nvidia (and customer card makers) have made 300 units for a need of 2-3mil users.

@maxalge, thanks there, that is stunning. 2.8GHz must rock like no tomorrow.

@bob 70932, tough call. SLI will be more thirsty on electricity. It depends how much you play then for economics. I was shocked to see Asus the 1080 pulling a huge 50W more than a single Asus 980 in one review though.

I do feel kind of sorry for folk stuck not knowing what to do right now. I want the 1070 or 1080, because I want the extra vRAM, because we need it. I have a single 980. However I spent £400 on graphics over the last twenty months. If I were to upgrade in another four months to a 1080, it would mean about £1000 on graphics in two years. That is not value for money for me.

£1000 just for graphics when half the games we buy are buggy. Half the games available are not even on PC. Many games are a rip-off. I literally struggle to find games to buy. I am right now playing Serious sam 3 for the eighth time for example. It's good game and worth it. However if there were good value reliable games about, I would be playing them instead.

I's not quantifiable in any way to me to get a 1080 right now. Unless I broke down and sold my 980 for a brilliant price. Which I don't want to because it a good quiet one.

@Math Geek, I dunno what you mean it won't it 2.8GHz. If they claim it, we have to wait and see. it does raise some serious questions about Nvidia though. Are we being short changed to make us upgrade more often?

I noticed you abbreviated my name. Yep cool. I realise it's a pain in the neck name. U6b36 was actually my log-in-name at university when I did my undergraduate degree. I kind of got sentimental and kept hold of it using it across a couple of forums. Silly really. Especially when my masters degree log-in-name was emf1, (at a different university). Much easier to use since emf would stand for electro-motive-force, within electronics.

I posted this on page 29, it appears that late July or early August are the predicted dates for availability to normalize.
http://www.tweaktown.com/news/52650/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-stock-improve-until-late-july/index.html

i meant that since they did it on LN2 , that we won't be able to do the same thing for a consumer edition. it may still oc better with a voltage increase than what we have seen but it won't be that high. maybe 2.3 or 2.4 is what i am seeing as possibilities on air or water. still very impressive but we won't be able to hit 2.8 at home at -100 degrees like they did!!! :)

@Cmarison, i have no idea why they are unavailable and i don't get into the speculation part of it myself. but that's the fact we have. they are hard to find right now and are supposed to be more readily available by mid july or shortly after. i never jump on things day 1 so can't say i am missing them much and by the time i buy, they will be easy to find and probably a bit cheaper than they are now (except for FE which won't drop more than likely.

Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 are great games, i beat the witcher 3 and I'm almost finished the first expansion. I'm almost with with fallout 4.. These games look great however they don't use much vram...

GTA 5, Shadow of Modor, black op3, rise of tomb raider and many more use more than 4 GB of RAM @ 1440p...

Earlier in this thread this topic was discussed...
