I'm stuck in the same boat, except that I water cooled my 980s so I am looking at the reference cards. On several of the games I am playing recently SLI isn't even a future plan, so I'm leaning towards a 1080.

I've been trying to confirm the EVGA ACX 3.0 is reference board with a non-reference cooler. Seems to be the consensus, especially based on the model numbers, but there is no photo evidence. I'm tempted to attempt SLI with the 1080 and get whatever I can for the 980s. But I also have the itch to re-build my system to get a NVMe drive to replace my Vertex 4s.

I'd rather get the $200 or so I can get out of a 980 now then wait until the 1060 is available in that price bracket.

Why would you want to get a 1060? It's going to be slower than a 980.

Not to much. It seems the higher resolution you go, the less CPU dependent the GPU is. Or something like that. But nom you should be fine.

i would not expect any issues either. it's still a solid cpu with a bit of life left in it

Why would you want to get a 1060? It's going to be slower than a 980.

I suppose that sentence could be interpreted that way. I mean to say that who would buy a used GTX980 from me when they could pick up a GTX1060 that likely will perform better for roughly the same amount.

Someone on tomshardware in another thread said that a GTX 1080 is overkill for 1440p. I think a GTX 1080 is perfect for a 21:9 1440p 144hz monitor. What y'all think? He said he plays skyrim with his 980ti at a steady 60fps in 4k

I would say its a great 1440p card if you like maxing games out and want some longevity.

Skyrim isnt a good title to compare with because its so easy to run. I used to run it maxed out in 1080p on a 560 ti. I doubt you need a 980 ti to get 60fps in 4k, lower cards could do it I bet.

Yes I think I was running Skyrim at 1440p DSR on a 1080p monitor on a GTX 650 Ti Boost, at a solid 60fps. If not it was 1080p solid 60fps.(Still in my drawer and used sometimes as a Phys X card.)

However even with my GTX 980 there is a place in Markarth that pushes the frame rate down to 40fps. I never did work out what that was. The CPU is minimal, and RAM usage was at about 25%.

I had a thread wondering why my GTX 650 Ti Boost was not doing so good in performance. People said it was my Intel Core 2 Duo E6700. Then in the thread I explained that I bought an i5 4690, and the 650 To Boost was working as it should. Mostly nukemaster but Q6600 Inside, and yourself were really patient and chatty with me. Anyway back to the thread. What Eximo just said is worrying. A 1060 if it performs the same as a 980, kind of makes the 980 hard to sell. Not going to be easy to shift Maxwell in an attempt to upgrade to Pascal.

I think we'd do better keeping our 980 as a PhysX card, or just keep them until we need to upgrade.

The time to ditch Maxwell for pascal is long gone. If you've done it ~2-3 months ago you could still get good value. Personally, I am more of a buy the toughest stuff you can get and make it last as long as possible which saves me the headache whether or not I can sell the old parts for good value ^^

The 980 is a good card, though. I wouldn't think upgrading it is necessary unless you want to upgrade your resolution as well. But it's your money so don't make me stop you!

I used to think that way as well and I have a substantial library of GPUs to show for it.

It is more due to my desire to upgrade than the performance. I enjoy building PCs and I would take this opportunity to re-build in a new chassis as well. I like my Bitfenix Ghost, but it is not really fit for purpose for what I have crammed in it right now. Thinking of stripping the water cooling, leaving a GTX980 in there, and trying to sell the complete system at a huge loss and build anew.

I don't have the money to upgrade every generation and I wasn't planning on it with Pascal since I have dual 980's...but seeing the benchmarks coming out for what the board partner cards from MSI and EVGA can do, where they're equalling, or in some cases beating what I can get without the hassle of SLI...throw in the new high bandwidth SLI bridges and it's making a very compelling argument for me to upgrade. Here in a month or so when pricing and availability stabilizes I'll definitely be looking very seriously at a new card.

Considering I'll have to wait AT LEAST till Q4 16 for a 1080ti/AMD equivalent, I'll be upgrading after 6 years.

And it's not even about the money, it's more like... If I wait a bit I can get more performance for the same price, so... can my PC handle what I do?

I am actually on the very edge atm, like a 4WD with only one wheel touching ground but I've waited so long that I'll wait a bit more and profit from it, hopefully ^^

I just wanted to know if the founder's card will be released earlier than the normal card?

1070 founder's edition is slated to be released on june 10th. custom cards will show up when ever they show up. still no custom cards for the 1080's in stores yet and they were released on the 27th.

gonna be a few weeks before you see any custom 1070 cards in stores.

i expected a good 2 weeks after launch day and it's only now been 6 days. i'd expect another week or more before we see them widely available.

some solid looking cards out there. the msi gaming x review shows it as a solid card with little problems maintaining the high oc and still keeping the frequency steady unlike the reference card which is all over the place with speed changes.

yah still a bit early to tell. asus strix is generally a great card and so is the gaming series from msi. but evga does some awesome work as well.

still need some more reviews before any suggestions can be made. from me anyway

i do love the looks of the evga cards. they are the nicest looking to me so far that i have seen.

I prefer founders/reference cards especially for me because I have a mini it'd build.

the blower style has a purpose for sure and that would be the main one there.

i'd still wait as there are a few brands putting out blower style custom cards which will still be better than founder's edition. and cheaper as they will be bottom of the line-up.

I wouldn't mind any opinions on the question I asked in that thread either as well. Want to know what's weird though? When I play Titanfall it takes up like over 10gb of system RAM but Overwatch only takes up about 5gb. Weird right?
