Not that I care about either as a game platform, but wouldn't it be unrealistic to assume that console performance will not be increased over time as well ?

truth is... if you think PC gaming is dying, think again!!!
The old model of consoles are dying, the upgradable (PC) and disposable (Smartphones) are MUCH more profitable!!!
I guess the next generation of consoles will be the last one in this model... and the next one will be a upgradable or disposable in like 3 years max... this, or cloud!
The industry needs that, since PC and smartphones are the largest share of the market!

[citation][nom]exban224[/nom]This is why the game industry is stagnating, people expecting mobile devices to become serious. They should stay as casual gaming devices only, no matter how good the graphics are, same with motion controls and 3d.[/citation]graphics are probably good enough for most people but the AI and physics are far behind. AI are dumbest as ever. Any kid can easily outsmart a AI when put into the same level(same advantage) of playing field.

You be wondered how much AI could, a 6 core 3960x Sandy bridge do if the stupid lazy software developer actually put money in this section for the mass consumer.

So... we can pay $400 plus exorbent amounts for data plans on our smartphones, to play on a screen about the size of a note pad, and shaped similat to the original NES controller with the edges sanded round OR...

Pay $400-$500 dollars on a console that I can hook up to my 1080p 120hertz 50" TV with surround sound, while holding my in my hands (which are resting on my lap) a controller designed to fit in my hands... OR...

Sit on my couch with my PC hooked up to the same HDTV with my wireless mouse and keyboard playing 90% of the games available on console and then some...

When can I get the smartphone? (I'm being painfully sarcastic)

AND I'd like to add:

Gaming Hierarchy
PC>Console>Board Games>Watching Game Shows>Dreaming about Watching Game Shows>Mobile

Okay first off Cloud Gaming will be terrible. I have already played games on the cloud and even with my 35 Mb/s down and 6 Mb/s up connection the graphics look TERRIBLE. If anyone doubts me go try it out there are a couple sites out there for it these days. Of course its important to make the distinction that the in-game graphics are not that bad its just when it gets piped over the internet it looks fuzzy and like a youtube stream.

Also you have to look out to the future, the average persons internet connection will not be able to stream a game in 4k; 2560X1600; or even 1080X5760 in any kind of good quality not until at least 2020.

Secondly if mobile games are the future then I will just go ahead and kill myself now. Give me a CF 7970 setup or Xbox 720 any day.

i think size of the screen doesn't matters that much when it comes to level of immersion, take god of war on psp for example, uncharted golden abyss on psvita. When i played these games, it was like any other game that i play on my ps3 or pc because these were very good games with awesome controls. And that is the biggest problem with mobile phones, controls are fucking wierd, games are cheap ass ripoffs of other games, latest ripoff is "Eternal Legacy 3D" of Final fantasy, others are modern combat, shadow guardian, nova etc. And this is what holding mobile phones back, not the graphics. graphics are still very good for mobile phones these days. They need games and good control to make it successful. Evry hardcore gamer would agree that a good game is nothing without good controls. Graphics take 4rd place after gameplay, story and controls.

Cell phones suffer from the same fragmentation and resource hungry OSs/APIs as PCs, and as such, like PCs, require 20-40% more power to achieve the same thing a console does.

Yeah, that graph is almost completely garbage. According to that graph not only would mobile graphic performance meet/surpass consoles in 2014, their extrapolation suggests it would surpass PCs not too long after that. It may be possible that mobile will surpass console, because the Wii U is only bringing the Wii to about where the PS3 and Xbox 360 are, and neither MSFT or Sony have confirmed a new console yet. But it would seem to me Nvidia didn't even place their own newest GPUs on their graph.

Let's see this for what it is. Mobile devices are in a craze state right now. Many people are convinced that they need to have the ability to play games and watch movies on a screen smaller than your great grandparent's TV. Nvidia has a Tegra chip they need to sell for said mobile devices. So, they need to do whatever they can to convince you and me that we're lame fools for not salivating for the chance to dump money on these absurdly high spec phones that are amazing graphically, but otherwise may only be as functional as the phones we had five or six years ago.

A portable gaming device like the PSP is different compared to phones and tablets, it's optimized for gaming. Since they have pretty good controls(not as good as a console controller but way better than the touchscreen interface on the phone and tablets), they do give a more immersive gaming experience on the go and many of the games are very very popular especially among youngsters. It's just too bad the PS Vita isn't the true successor to the original psp, sony have been getting worse on the psp since they release the psp go

I second your opinion that a good control is really important as well as gameplay and story, graphics is afterwards. You can make any game looks graphically good, but if it doesn't give the gamers a good gameplay, you can't expect them to say it's a good game.

- I play games on the PC and I remember silent hill homecoming had poor controls and I only finish it because I wanted to finish the silent hill series.

- Prototype had pretty good controls and graphics but I never finish the game because gameplay and storywise are both bad.

-Assassin's creed revelation had better graphics than it's previous release, very good controls and gameplay as well, but it's story was no way better than ac2 or ac brotherhood.

- Now, we have skyrim, it's not the best looking game out there but controls, gameplay and story are all very very good. That's what I call a great game.

(No offense to the fans of each game I mentioned as this is my personal opinion.)

So what the chart is saying, is the Samsung Galaxy S IV will come with a free oven mitt? Sadly, I see the mobile sector hitting a hard block, real soon. Simply because, unlike PC cases, or consoles, phones have no active cooling, and to stay thin and streamlined as the average consumer likes, you can't fit one in it. Sure they can still get some wiggle room, looking at the Vita's power, but they will hit the block, long before CPU/GPU technology hits a milestone and can be more passively cooled. Speaking of the Vita, mine doesn't exactly stay cold, it warms up if played for awhile, not hot by any means, but you can feel the difference.

The other matter is, battery performance won't keep up with higher end hardware, again a phone size issue, we might hit that block sooner then the heat issue. No way on earth will a current gen GPU run in a phone for very long. It may have to do less pixel filling, but it's still going to chew a cell phones battery like a lion eating a hyena. The Vita does a good job but it's twice as thick and huge as my phone, and it doesn't take calls, email, txt, search for networks, flip around 3g and 4g every 5mins, and run a dozen apps in the background half of which also burn the wireless chip eating more power.

Imo, unless technology hits some incredible breakthrough's in the next 12 months, I see the mobile sector stagnating dramatically in gaming aspects. Their starting to struggle how to make a phone last 12hours with average use, good luck figuring that out with gaming added in.

What you all need to realize is that the makers of ALL games are in it for money. Even if consoles and PCs are much better graphically and interactively (mouse, keyboard, controller) than mobile devices for the majority of games, if the mobile sector is where the money is at then that is where they will focus their attention. One can't really fault them for this - they are a business. A business must make money.

That being said, I'll share my personal thoughts on the subject. I am an avid PC gamer and have been for many years. I will go PC over anything else any day. I think that PC and console gaming will play a part in the gaming market for quite some time, but mobile gaming is on the up and up. I have played some games on mobile devices that really impressed me. Order and Chaos Online and Pocket Legends were two pretty good MMORPGS that i could play on my old iPhone 3GS - and that is a pretty old peice of hardware. As CPUs and GPUs get more and more advanced, mobile gaming will get better and better. Yes, the mouse and keyboard are an issue, but imagine a bluetooth (or something similar) keyboard and/or mouse for your mobile phone that you are streaming via a device (similar to apple TV) to your 60" TV.

The fact remains that the majority of people don't "hardcore" game like some of us and don't give a rat's ass about an amazing gaming PC. Even some people like me who would love a high end box but can't afford it will turn toward a more affordable mobile gaming device. If I can stream it to my bigscreen and use a keyboard and mouse...then I might be more of a proponent of mobile gaming.

[citation][nom]Shin-san[/nom]Developers are saying that the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are very close in terms of performance. Remember that nVidia is responsible for the PS3's RSX chip[/citation]

What does Nvidia playing a part in the Ps3's graphics have to do with how close the Xbxo 360 and the PS3's graphics are? Sure, they seem to be close and that is the common consensus, but I don't understand what Nvidia's part in designing the PS3's graphics has to do with it. The graphics for the Xbox 360 are Ati.

[citation][nom]memadmax[/nom]"Consoles" are becoming more and more like glorified, scaled down, closed, desktop systems....The end is near for the console era.[/citation]

For gaming, that's all a console ever was. It's just a desktop, except it is more entertainment focused. Older consoles were more specifically for gaming, but a console's purpose has always been as a more entertainment focused desktop, even if it only supplied entertainment as a gaming device.

Does this marks the end of consoles? Maybe, but only because all technology has been growing in what it can do. Consoles are no longer purely gaming devices. Smart phones are no longer only phones (even most dumb phones aren't just phones). Even computers have evolved from being more or less purely business devices to a highly general purpose device. Even my newer scientific calculator can do more things than just math. For example, some of the scientific calculators can even be used to play older FPS games.

If you realise the expected specs for the next generation console, and take a look at what is already here in mobile computing power and what is to come... it's quite logical.
With tablets, netbooks, smarth phones, Smart TVs, , "smart" everywhere (TV set top boxes based on Android devices, etc) the only thing which will set apart the consoles is software and games development. But then again, the battle might be already lost, as Android devices are in fact a bigger market than consoles.
Convergence has its ins and outs... the concept and all the functionality gets in there, but which name remains ?

This is why I have not yet jumped on the smartphone bandwagon: Smartphones have had a 10x leap in performance nearly every year, which means that while your PC may be out of date in 6mo-1year, your phone is already out of date the week you purchase it. Plus with such limited software they have not really lived up to the level of usefulness that I expect from them. With the new phones and improved mobile office applications coming out this year I think it is the first time I have actually looked at what is coming down the pipe and thought "I think I want that". Phone tech will soon start leveling off to a 'mere' doubbeling every 18months, and once a platform/interface can last for more than a year or two without changing and still being useful is when we will finally start seeing good software written because developers will finally know what to develop for, and how the product will be used. Finally the day is coming!

The future is in mobile.

Imagine a world where a holographic screen can be projected around you in a 360 degree manner. Where you can actually feel the projections. I believe this is possible in 50 years from now. When ways are found to be able to harness natural forces as energy all around you, be it cosmic radiation, wind or self generated kinetic energy.

Where googlebytes of infomation can be transmitted instantaneously.

Remember Moore's Law. Perhaps someday the chips will be directly implanted in our being itself, and you won't even need a physical medium to see/control anything. Maybe the next century.

All they need is an attractive and cheap bluetooth dual analogue controller with a gaping rectangular area in the middle that will sync fit any android/iOS device and things can start looking sunny for mobile gaming.

[citation][nom]blubbey[/nom]I'm pretty sure I've talked with people about predictions like this a year or two ago. What will the controls be like then? I struggle to see a mobile device being better for FPS's, RTS's, RPG's etc than a PC, primarily because of the controls.I fail to see why you have a problem with single player games. If you're all about being social and interacting, go to a bar or a club and meet people.[/citation]

YOU GUYS ARE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT HERE... Companies cater to generations... As the days go by younger and younger kids are getting cell phones. These younger kids become accustomed to this type of device and want it to develop for the better. My son is 1 right now, I wonder what he will get??? It is up to me to either guide him to the controller, touch, or keyboard. If he works mostly with touch, I am sure he will say a keyboard and controller are worthless...

People say it's pointless, because mobile lack of big screen, HQ audio and most important Controls. This is true, i don't really see a point having a tablet or mobile with a small screen and more than 1080p of resolution, it's not like you are putting your eyes 1 inch away from the screen. Who would also play on mobile? maybe a 30 minutes of entertainment before the battery dies out. I'm pretty sure there will be heating problems too, just like the ipad 3.

Nvidia is doing a helluva job selling themselves into the mobile market, and that's about all they're trying to do here.

Comparing Consoles to Mobile/Smartphones is almost like comparing Consoles to PC. Apples to Oranges.

That is what they are, if you haven't noticed.
