I find that using FRAPS for Frames per Second doesn't give very accurate measurments. I've gotten ten less frames per second due to FRAPS running. However, I do believe there is a command to display the Frames per Second, you might check your manual or Google it.

I have never noticed any drop in performance and I run the full Fraps almost all the time while gaming. It's handy to check your fps, benchmark a section, capture screenies, even a video(which does lower fps). I've even run 3dmarks with Fraps on for fun without effecting the score. Plus the fps has always been accurate compared to in game command prompt fps and 3dmark fps also.

Say how do I check my FPS on oblivion?

Do NOT use Fraps, it actually appears to retards framerate a bit in this game (probably need a Frap update).

Oblivion has a built in FPS counter.

Go into the consol (by pressing the tilde '~' symbol, and then type TDT.

That will display framerate.

Don't be surprised if you see wild fluxuations based on inside/outside, lush vegetation/sparse, many/few NPCs. some is VPU some is CPU.

Just don't expect 60-90 fps all the time, it just doesn't happen except maybe on a top rig running 640x480, and even then the CPU constraint will kill ya sometimes.

Actually alot of people are reporting a FRAPS fps hit in Oblivion. Usually I'd agree with you, used it many times (including to post those optimizations cliops I took of Aquamark when it first came out), but suposedly there is a negative impact. Perhaps something in Oblivion's CPU handling is causin the issue, things like 3Dmak and other benchmarks often don't use much CPU power (unless cpu benching), so the impact may be different for Oblivion.

I am surprised, but it's not unrealistic, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a FRAPS refresh of some kind to address such issues.

Personally I'd recommend using the built-in framerate indicator.

Well, thanks, that's good to know. I have tried it in so many games before but haven't tested it with oblivion. I'll give the ingame fps a shot tonight instead; a few more fps would be a good thing.

BTW, It was a good weekend. I must have 12+ hours into this game by now.

Apparently not.

I haven't used it for benchmarking in so long (mainly to check that Aquamark precision overdraw issue way back when [remember those?]).

I like you am glad to get some confirmation that it's not just in our heads.

Makes sense though, 0 impact? I would suspect only in games that don't use all the CPU.

Funny thing is I have to backtrack about 2 hours of gameplay because i accidentally stole something, and yes it was accidental because it would've been blatant otherwise. It's like when you go to talk to someone while you forget you're in sneak mode and accidentally pick their pocket. My fault, didn't notice at the time since I didn't take any thing just saw the content of their posessions, but now whenever I talk to an Imperial Guard he wants to arrest me. I tried getting ride of ALL of my possesions, but it didn't help, and nothing is red-hand highlighted. so -2hours for me, but a solid 8-10 over the weekend (spent most in bed with Tea and that recovering so I can be back on the hills this weekend for the company ski day (free skiing and $20 food voucher [for any food on hill {no alcohol, hey I can buy that myself! 8) }] ).

Anywhoo, enjoying it sofar, and really plays much better than I expected, now I'm pretty much convinced, no more Desktops for me, only laptops. Now just need dual core 64bit laptop with X1700 and I'm good to go.

Is it a cpu thing? What have you noticed? Is it random lowered framerates or consistently lower?

I just loaded up a few save points with and without fraps (full registered ver. 2.5.5.5) running. I looked at the framerates without moving, and also putting the crosshairs on various spots. The fraps framerates were the same with exception of one load point fraps said 37 fps where the ingame counter was going back and forth between 35 and 36. I also took a walk down a path outside where I pass by a few people, looking for lowest fps as well as overall idea of where it was sitting. With Fraps running or without it running I didn't see a difference in reported fps to be honest. Not that it's conclusive testing by any means, but no difference as of yet anyway.

That's why I question what lowered fps people are seeing. Someone give me an example. Is it a random lowering only showing up at time, maybe during cpu intensive scenes? or can it be seen doing what I have done in loading various save points and comparing? I'll do more testing, but it seems that the 2.5.5.5 full version is working fine for me, at least paired with an A64 4000+, 2GB ram, GF6800U OC.

On my X1900XT and AMD x2 4200+.... Oblivion runs so nicely with full HDR on at 1280x1024 though minus the AA. Oh... i've noticed that the NPCs that help you fight just LOVE to step in the way of your blade/arrow/spell, and then start killing you when you kill one of them when it was blatantly their fault for stepping RIGHT in the way of my attack whilst on very low HEALTH.... I hope it gets sorted out with a patch so that they are less inclined to find a reason in order to kill/maim/rape you.

From what I've read on the forum, it's during transistions and large number of NPC battles where there is already a big CPU hit. Usually the game is running at 40-60% CPU for most PCs so standing doing nothing probably isn't being choked for resources. Try something near the Gates at Kvasha when there's lotsa scamps and people milling about and see what happens.

I thought you'd have left work by now.

Nope here for about another hour or so. :x

So be it, I get to start late though (flex-time my choice [7-3ish or 10-6sih {depending on lunch}, I prefer a late start Mondays with an hour+ lunch 8) ] ).

YEah the AI is hillarious, Imperial guards stealing, randomly killing other NPCs (I got my silver bow when a guard killed the Imperial Forester for Hunting the King's Deer 8O ), hey too bad for him, but Free Silver Bow for me within 15 mins of leaving the sewers! 8)

I like that they think for themselves, but incidents like you describe are kinda weird.

That would stink to discover later you are wanted. I accidentally stole a couple items too, but was always caught immediately by the shop keeper. I paid the fine a couple times but finally decided to take on the incoming guard. Like my first arena match, it didn't go well. 😳

Yeah the annoying part is that I didn't know at the time, and now they want to take me back to some city and off my quest. It's just a little nuissance, happened in Morrowind too, but I forgot to save for a while (thinking autosave kept multiple copies [be warned autosave saves over itself]) so now I have to go back to just before the priory which is the last time I saved. Sucks since I explored 2 caves and later a mine (full of Goblins), increased my sneak skill immensly and now it's all for naught.

Oh well it was fun the first time, and maybe this time I won't break so many freaking lockpicks trying to pick them manually with a sticky rollerball (got move back to the optical one now that I don't use the scroll ring to "zoom" in Oblivion liike I did in all those FPS (no scroll wheel/ring on my Optical Logitech).

OK, gotcha. That makes sense, just wanted to rule out a fraps bug first that would easily show up. I have not been too Kvatch yet but I'll look for some large NPC areas or battles and do further testing there.

I broke my share of lockpicks from the start. Finally got the hang of it to some degree. On a plus note, I get 999 fps during th lockpick minigame.

Goblin caves are fun, but not very challenging. My biggest problem is getting all the loot out with me. :)

? for you, did you do a fishing quest? That one ticks me off as I killed one fish but the dang arrow now points to absolutely nothing. I spent 30 minutes swimming/walking the lake and I can't find another fish. :x

Nope haven't done the fishing quest, been sticking to what I thought were high reward quests (whoppee 20 gold for killing the necromancer when they said a 'big bounty'? , Free Room and Board for making everyone visible again? Jeez what a bunch of Cheapo Ba$$turdz! )

I SOOO cant wait for my rig to be assembled and I can get this baby. I will invest more time then humanly decent and Ill love every second.

oK,

Don't want to be a XBOX360 fanboy, but I've been playing it on a 50' Plasma and it's awsome.

MY RIG
I have an AMD 64 4400, 2 x 7800 GTX KO's Sli, 24' samsung LCD, 2 x 74g Raptors Raid 0, Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty, 2 gig RAM...

I'd like to see how it plays on my PC system at 1920x1200 resolution. The graphics on my XBOX are smooth and very detailed. My load time are somewhat long between areas. Maybe like 10 seconds or less. I am quite pleased with the gameplay.
This is coming from hard-core pc only enthusiast for the past 8 years and the first console I have ever owned, besides owning an Intelivision when I was a teenager...haha
