I have a really odd question that I am having trouble finding info about and I'm at my wits end! I have my laptop permanently connected to a monitor, using a USB-C to Display Port cable. The weird thing with this, is every time I turn my laptop back on, I have to unplug and re-plugin the cable for the monitor to show up. If not, the laptop screen will just display like it's the only screen available.

I have tried to detect displays after turning the computer on to see if that helps, and it will not detect anything. I'm just lost as to if there is any solution to this, or if I will just forever have to put the plug in and out every time I start up my computer. Any help would be amazing! Thank you!

From cold boot or wake from sleep? Since there's a diff.

As of why laptop won't detect already connected display, where you need to plug it again - difficult to tell. Probably some power saving setting for laptop, that disables the connection to USB ports and won't re-initialize them until connection is cut off (unplugged) and re-established (plugged back in).

or if I will just forever have to put the plug in and out every time I start up my computer.
If you do that, you will wear out the USB plug/connector. Since it has finite amount it can be plugged in/out.

For solution, this may work;
amazon: https://www.amazon.com/RIITOP-Type-C-Extension-Support-Charging/dp/B0D5CHY3C1

It is not an actual fix, but instead would keep you from wearing out the USB plug/connector and would give you more convenient way to do this.
Now, i'm not sure if this specific cable is enough for your display. It does support display and USB 3.1 (10 Gbps). But if your monitor has high reso with high refresh rate, whereby it would require 20 Gbps or 40 Gbps speeds, then this switch clearly is too less.

If possible; try the external monitor behind another PC (laptop or desktop) and look if the monitor behaves in the same manner.
Try 2nd monitor (or TV) behind your laptop.

This is to rule out monitor issue.

What's the external monitor make/model (part number)?

Also, what could help, is when you have dual-monitor running, set the external monitor as default/main one. This may fix the issue.
