Hello there! I have overclocked my CPU a while ago. And I only managed to get my i7-7700k from 4.2ghz to 4.4ghz. The temps where fine as well as the voltage. But I couldn't get it stable past that point, my screen froze while stress testing. I wanted to tryout some VENGEANCE LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz. And I couldnt get it to 3200mhz. My pc wouldnt boot and I had to clear the CMOS battery. I could only run it stable at 2122mhz. The ram has 1.35 voltage by default. Dual channel worked. But if I use my single channel Team Group Vulcan Vulcan DDR4-2400 16GB stick. I can overclock it stable till 2800mhz. What is going on here? Could my Asrock z270 pro 4 be the problem? All my voltage settings are on auto.

Thank you for reading.

Best regards,

You got to up the voltages when you OC. MB and CPU support more than base RAM clock. MB up to 3733MHz but IMC only 2400MHz, did you try setting XMP and than start modifying from there ?
I think that OC-ing 2400MHz RAM to 3200MHz may be too ambitious. If that RAM could run at 3200MHz reliably it would be rated so from factory and sold for more money.

I'm not trying to oc my 2400mhz ram stick to 3200mhz. I have seperate 3200mhz ram kit that I want to run at that default speed. But is 1.35 v for 3200mhz not enough?

The VENGEANCE LPX RAM that has a base freq of 3200mhz won't boot at 3200mhz.

7700k should be relatively easy to overclock, and it can certainly run an XMP profile of 3200Mhz. You may need to increase the memory voltage a little to like 1.36 for additional stability.

I ran a 7700k at 5Ghz all core with DDR4 3000Mhz at 1.3 volts (a slight undervolt for the memory, but I never stressed that part of it)

It did take a ludicrous 1.416 core voltage and a delidding (normal paste, but had one hot core stock), but 4.5Ghz should be doable on far less, the CPU does 4.5Ghz stock. If you can't get 1.35 volts on the CPU to get you past 4.5Ghz, it may be the CPU.

As you increase core voltage you also need to increase the input voltage (up to 2V is about the limit, I can't recall what I had it set to) And you will need an aggressive LLC setting to keep it from crashing under heavy loads.

Consult a good Skylake or Kabylake overclocking guide, should get you along a lot farther than a few sentences in a forum post. These are both pretty good. My favorite guide doesn't seem to be around any more.

No I cant get it over 4.5. Even when I set the volt to 1.3. my fans starts ramping up to the max and the temps get very hot (70 or higher when idiling). I can only set the voltage to auto for it to work normal. Tomorrow I will try the 1.36 v for the RAM.
