Basically my problem is that my computer wakes up randomly when i put it to standby. Sometimes when i go to bed at night and i havent got it doing busy tasks i put it on standby so that i can sleep without the fan noise, but in the middle of the night the computer comes back to life! an im sure im not pressing any keys or moving the mouse accidentaly.

What could cause the computer to automatically wake up fron standby?

Thanks for your time.

Hehe :)

BIOS settings, wireless devices, network settings, malware, scheduled tasks such as driver update checks, virus updates, defrags....

Why not just power down? If it sounds like a hassle, you may have too much stuff bogging your comp down.... mine boots in under 30 seconds.

Pick up the latest edition of Maximum PC magazine... it has a GREAT complete article on speeding up shutdowns and boots.

There is really no way I can trace down everything for you, but here are some suggested areas to look at:

1. Wireless keyboard or mouse. These devices can be triggered by outside interference.

2. Windows updater. Found in security settings on XP.

3. Any security software. All of these need periodic updates and might be configured to check nightly.

4. BIOS settings such as "Wake on LAN"... these are usually found under power options or some such.

5. A host of spyware that wants to "call home" to report on your activities. These include all those wonderful little applications you are always prompted to download off the internet, like desktop weather centers, automatic time setters, screen savers, search engines, ad infinitum.

6. Even legitimate things like printer programs resident in your system tray may want to check for driver updates periodically.

You are really far better off turning off the computer at night.
