[citation][nom]techtre2003[/nom]A lot of people mention that the Mac computers "look cool". Can we have a QOTD that asks "Are Macs really that cool?" I for one don't think glossy white with an apple on it is that cool.[/citation]
I'm sure the girls would disagree.

Its pretty dearest comrade for a guy, but for a girl its perfectly alright.

great commercial, its like going to the Lexus dealership and asking to buy a car for under 13k and then going to the ford dealership and buying one.

Just an observation: I get a good chuckle about the amount of talk on Windows 7. An OS that's not even in Release Candidate version yet and whose name may not be "Windows 7" in the end. I see very little that's revolutionary about Windows 7. I would be impressed had it been the successor to XP instead of Vista.

Only if you put a lawnmower engine into the Lexus and a V12 in the Ford.

[citation][nom]JMcEntegart[/nom]I just thought that it was weird they put Apple first. Like a Mac would automatically be everyone's first choice.[/citation]

I disagree.

That is just relative to ones perspective.

If the person had gone to the apple store last you could easily twist your previous take one the commercial and view it as "She didn't like what the PC had to offer and chose to then look at Apple's products but then chose the PC since it was cheaper"

I find Sony laptops extremely cool looking, just as thin, and just as overpriced as any Mac. Ditto for Adamo and Envy 133. Apple doesn't have the monopoly on cool looking, overpriced laptops.

HP, Gateway, they're all adding graphical designs to spruce up the looks of their laptops.

And to Tuan, as a humble reader, it looks to me that most of the readers of this site would prefer you leave Mac articles off it, hence the large number of complaints whenever you post a Mac article. Yet, no matter how many negatives comments you get, Toms still keeps posting the Mac articles. Is it any wonder why some speculate whether you're getting paid off, since it seems like Toms is continually pushing Mac articles on the readers, even when the readers keep telling you we don't want them. Seems pretty obvious to me that you're neglecting your readers' interests and simply writing whatever you want. If so, then you have no reason to whine about receiving complaints. You reap what you sow.

Taun,

I may be guilty in the past have sending a jab at TH. I just really find it hard to believe that someone working in the industry would be pro Mac. Some of the articles written lately really have me scratching my head.

10 reasons why I spent $2900 on a Mac.
Macbook review 1 and 2
And this most recent ad.
The last paragraph really puzzles me. If I can quote.
“Sure, they all WANT one of your computers, but it’s just our luck they can’t afford your prices!”

I really don't think that this is the case. Nobody with a high level of computer knowledge will consider a Mac.

I have been into computers since the P166 days. I personally know 7 programmers, 4 network administrators, 7 computer sales people, and about 10 other people that build their own systems. 13 of these people I call friends. Not one of these people own or would consider buying a Mac. When I was the first of my friends to go I7 a few of them came over to see my overclocking attempts. The subject of your site came up as we were looking for bios settings. One of my friends suggested that there is a whole lot of Mac coverage considering that their market share is about 7%. We all kind of laughed and agreed that Macs are for the ignorant and that's okay.

It would be like me buying a fancy cake from the Costco bakery because I lack the knowledge and the skill to bake my own. That doesn't make me dumb, just ignorant. If I were to brag to a baker that my cake from Costco is better because of the Costco experience. That baker would not only think that I'm ignorant, he would think that I'm an idiot.

I know more than 300 people with computers in their home. I know 1 person that has a Mac desktop. 5 macbooks come to mind.

Selling the Mac experience to someone like me is not an easy task. BTW I am not ignorant of the Mac OS. I really don't mind it. They all do the same thing in the end.

Do I love Microsoft…. God no. but I use their products because they offer superior value and do the job. If Apple offered better value, would I switch.. right f ing quick. I wouldn't be switching for the experience, that's for sure.

There's no question which company offers better value. Arguing that questions is like arguing the color of the sky.

Tuan, you yourself once wrote an article stating that Macs are 2 times the cost of PC's.

Do I find it fun to debate, yeah I guess I do. If I was younger and more immature I might even spend a Saturday afternoon torturing a Mac salesperson.

i just saw the ms commercial and it was like not as good as the apple ones, you would think that with all the money micro$oft has it could make a commerical that is better than the apple folks could, imho the apple ones are better, lighter, funnier, cooler.

I work in retail, specifically higher end retail.
I cannot count the number of customers I see faithfully every Monday morning (or any morning for that matter) toting their macbooks preaching to me about how great thier computer is when I comment on it.
I hear about how marvelous it is and how it 'just works' and as the conversation continues I find they are here in the mall because they have a class every Monday at 10am for the next year..
Every Monday for 52 weeks to learn how to use a computer that 'just works'. What an incredible con job.
My god, buy windows for dummies for 34.95 and a 700 windows based computer and save yourselves the cash and the arrogance, you only want to send email and manage your music library.

Thats pretty weak marketing IMHO. Nobody buys an HP cos they REALLY like HP. Its all they can afford.
Its the same with everything in life. Nobody buys a Hyundai because they are like, mmm, these cars are damn fine. Its all they can afford.
Ps. I own both an HP and a MBP. Guess which i use. Sure the HP is cheaper, but i also wanted to throw it away after 6 months.

Can't argue with Apple heads... I've stopped trying.
First Computer to get hacked each year in that hacking contest they hold is always a Mac. Anti-Virus companies actually have to publish the security risk found in Macs on the internet after months of begging for them to fix the Security Leak and Mac Users actually have the nerve to say "Well... We're more Secure."
So I'm just going to say it because near everyone here already knows it and just isn't saying it.
"People who buy Apple Products are idiots. They are the ones that no matter what you tell them are just so full of themselves that they are just going to do whatever they want. If they thought it was cool to jump off a cliff they would even if you tried to tell them that they would die. We are talking ride the short bus type of idiots here. You can't reason with them, you can't argue with them, you can only hope they go away and leave you alone."
My answer to Apple Heads have always been. "Yeah, yeah. The bathroom is down the hall and to the right." and then get the hell out of there.
There is no Mac Experience, there is no cost justification, there is no Mac runs better but for Apple Heads there always will be. They just don't see the world in the normal way that all of us do.
I have a cousin who is an Apple Head and an Uncle who is Mentally Retarded and guess who I would rather spend time talking to? You guessed it... My f'ing Uncle. All my cousins friends are Apple Heads too and when they get together it's an unbelievable experience in why Evolution doesn't exist and why I don't think God exists. Because if God existed then he would gather all these Apple Heads together and stick them on some fuzzy Pink and White Planet and call it good. Then again it might just be Gods way of testing my patience but I'm telling yeah one more time of an Apple Head going "Mmmhhh... Free Gum!" and I'm going to loose it.

Awww Cuddles needs a hug.
Hugs time for cuddles everyone!
😛

Also... "Lauren" is driving a convertible VW. Lets ask what type of people in the USA buy european convertibles?

a. Budget conscious consumers looking to squeeze all they can out of a limited budget?

b. Consumers willing to drop a few extra $ on something so they can look cool.

Oh, and i do love Mac's but also my quad core water cooled PC beast which im on now. Most the people that hate on macs... dont own one 😉

This is for aracheb.

I for one own one of these so called expensive laptops from Apple. I paid only $1499 for my 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Aluminum Unibody laptop with backlit keys. It came with 4GBs of DDR3 1067MHz RAM, a 320GB HD, 802.11n, BlueTooth +EDR, 8X DVDRW, Mini Display port, gigabit ethernet, 2 USB 2.0 ports, iSight camera, built-in microphone, S/P-DIF in and out, headphone, line in, microphone in, NVDIA GEForce 9400M 256MBRAM and a 13" LCD.

Granted I had to pay an additional $29 for the mini Display Port to DVI adapter but that's really optional and only needed if you want to connect the laptop to an external monitor.

I find it highly detestable that you have chosen to misrepresent how much a Mac costs by inflating and misquoting the prices. Anyone with half a brain can go to Apple's website and configure a similar laptop and find that the prices you listed in your post were purposely inflated to make your Dell seem cheaper. And FYI, you neglected to note that Apple ships all their computers for free.

Mac OS X alone is what makes this computer usable. If it could not run OS X I would not pay $200.00 for it.

If you want to count, software, then the iLife suite alone is worth more than the dumbed down apps that ship on Windows.

Find me a Dell laptop computer that has all that built-in for that price, then we'll talk.

But the run-on-any-pc Mac OS X a.k.a. OSX86/Hackintosh, they're not so nice,

People trying it and getting hugely popular to THESE people,
but not surprisingly notorious to THOSE people.

"Those who play games alot hate Macs"

[citation][nom]FHDelux[/nom]Apple sells an experience, what they believe computing should be, if you buy an apple computer, it will run their OS of current well. You can easily go out and buy a PC that will barely run windows, Apple simply wont let you do that. I'm not saying either way is right, but, you can buy a 500 dollar PC that comes with Vista, how great of a user experience is that, its slow and painful? Once you get to a certain level 1,000 dollars or so, you get computers that are nicely built to run Vista, but that is a far cry from the 500 they start at.[/citation]

I dont think that this is true. I build computers as a side job and I can build a PC for $400 that will run Vista great. For example, my latest computer is a C2D 2.0 GHz 4gb ram 750gb HD 780g computer that run vista very well. and again this is 400 including the cost of building it, if you wanted to make it yourself it would be in the $300's

PC Prices have tumbled lately and if you think about all the intellectual property that goes into a computer, the margins are getting razor thin for PC makers. These slim margins has severely reduced the quality and innovation that these low-cost computers can offer.

The latest line of Apple MacBook computers are in a class by themselves. The quality in their construction is evident to even the most casual observer. Aluminum unibody chassis, magnetic power adapter, sub-notebook size and weight, iLife software suite, the PC world has nothing quite like it.

I for one do not welcome the "PC's are cheaper" battle-cry that all the Fan Boys are throwing around right now. I think that these low cost PC's are not nearly as desirable.

I know that there is a few good Apple Heads out there but they are few and far between.
Most of the people who use this site make their own computers. My current computer has to run 24 hours a day 7 days a week and only shut down when I am available. I run three OS's most of the time due to Legacy issues and sometimes a forth. My computer runs my entire house and I have microphones placed throughout for Speech Recognition.
Four years ago I was involved in an accident that shattered my back. My computer is my lifeline to being independant. It is handbuilt and is upgraded continuosly to be a modern computer. I know what each component in my system is, I know that it is the best Hardware you can get, and I know that I won't have a problem with it.
My cousin (and his cronies) tried to get a Mac system installed and it failed. A two week trial and by the end if I could of pulled the crap out myself I would of. There was failures on an Epic level. The system would overheat, there was extrodinary costs, the lack of software, and the software that could run didn't run well and cost twice as much. I don't even want to talk about the Monitors that at first looked nice but a week of nonstop running caused them to overheat and glitch out.
I argued with my cousin for another week after that and told him the Apple Experience was like a Barium Enema. In the end I had to have another person come in and take down the Apple System and replace it with my old system. My cousin and his cronies were going to force me to have an Apple Experience so I'm pretty much anti-Apple at this point. I'm not even close to being done on my whole Apple Experience because returning and getting my money back was a whole different experience in hell.
In the end I returned to my PC system. The one is which when I say "Turn on the Shower." It turns on the shower at the precise temperature I want. It records my TV shows I want and then gets rid of the commercials. If I want to run Office and two or three of the CS 4 programs without having to worry about my Home Automation System going down I can.
The system I have running I can tell you for a fact. In the Mac World there is nothing like it. Not even close.

Lauren wanted to be cool, so she went to the Apple Store first. Really, why else would she go to the Apple Store first. Probably because most of her friends owned Macs and iPhones. She looked around but realized her pockets weren't deep enough, so she had to "settle" for what she could afford. Good for her. In six months when her heavy 17" HP starts to fall apart and begins to be infested with malware and viruses, she'll look back and wish she'd ponied up the extra money to buy a Mac notebook running OSX and some AppleCare.

That's OK, because some people need to learn from their mistakes and sometimes just a good dose of reality will lead them down the right path. So basically the Microsoft ad is telling people, if they can't afford a Mac, then they should just be happy with what they can afford, a Windows-powered PC. In a world where people want the most expensive homes, cars and clothing, they should settle for the cheapest PC they can get their hands on.

Way to go, Lauren. Make sure you put on your brightest smile at your fiance when he buys you the cheapest engagement ring in the display. Understand that he's not being cheap, he's just being smart.

You're funny..... you were joking right?

Or are you in the cult?

People with above average computer knowledge get a kick out of you Mac guys.

Thanks for making me laugh.

Try this for an analogy.....

Take a Ford mustang. Peel the markings off. Add some ground effects. Slap a Ferrari sticker on it and charge twice as much.

Macs are a joke. Ask any programmer, ask anyone who posses enough knowledge to build their own machine.

Why build when you can buy slower parts for more money.

And I did use a Mac at work for 2 years because my boss was an idiot.
We had fun not being able to use the accounting software from the bank. Half the machines had to run windows anyway. Heaven help us when we bought a new printer. It usually took 3/4 months before they got it working.

Pardon any spelling mistakes.... I can't type very well when I am laughing.

iphone "Make sure you put on your brightest smile at your fiance when he buys you the cheapest engagement ring in the display."

Does one jeweller sell the same diamond for almost twice as much?

Core2 duo, Seagate HD, ddr low end ram. same parts different case.

Apple does't make computer hardware no matter what the Mac salesperson said.

1- you can get an apple pc from 599
2- If apple really is that much better, then why does MS run almost 80% of the market today?

I don't like the closed approach of MS, but I like the closed approach of Apple even less!
MS just has my no1 vote because of it's many applications it can run.
Linux comes in a definite second, and Apple dead last!
