Question PC stuttering and lagging when play games

Hey everyone,

I have been really struggling to get my PC to perform the way I want it to and the way it should. I have decently good specs, but when I want to play certain games they stutter like crazy with FPS being fine and then suddenly dropping to 10 then going back up. It becomes unenjoyable and it is honestly making me want to give up. I have tried updating the BIOS, reinstalling windows, enabling XMP, updating graphics drivers, you name it. My PC specs are below in a UserBenchmark (I know it is not very reliable, but they are all organized there).

Thank you, any advice is greatly appreciated. I am open to advice on what new hardware I should get as well as I am already in the market to make some upgrades.

Also, my CPU usage reaches 100% when gaming on games where it is as its worst, and I am getting ID 5858 in WMI-Activity.

Looks like your running a 3700x with a 3070ti at 1080p?

I would adventure to say you may have a slight cpu bottleneck meaning that the gpu is likely giving frames to the cpu faster than it can handle loading the next data set. If you were at 1440p you probably wouldn’t notice as much.

Might be a good excuse to upgrade though. I’d guess the 3700x is still worth close to 100 bucks if you sell on eBay or anything. A 5700x should run 150-160 something. You could also look at the 5700x3d and so on. But if you could essentially upgrade for about 50 bucks that might not be a bad move in my opinion.

Assuming you are in the US on those prices though. But if not it should still give a rough idea.

You could definitely go that route. It costs a bit more but a lot of folks would say the 7800x3d is the best bang for bucks gaming cpu right now.

One thing you could consider later as well, you could look into going 1440p. The 3070/3070ti was good for that when it first launched. Might struggle a little more now since they only have 8gb of ram. But I can tell you when you go to 1440p, at least in my opinion, that’s one of your biggest visual upgrades.

Got it, I am mostly concerned about FPS because I play a little more competitively, so I am actually looking to stay away from 1440p and higher resolutions.

But do you think that these stutters are mostly attributed to the CPU/RAM and not the GPU? I just don't understand why my system is performing so poorly with this card and CPU.

I’ll let some others answer, but generally as I understand it, your gpu is responsible for visuals. But cpu is more about fps. In other words the gpu can push frames onto the screen but the cpu has to be able to keep up. So it’s a balancing act. If high fps is the goal then you want a cpu at least strong enough not to slow down your gpu.

Also you mentioned the cpu hitting 100% when it happens. Which could mean that basically your gpu is giving the cpu the frames faster than it can process them so it might be getting maxed out. Not knowing detail level you play at, a lot of guys would say turn up the eye candy or to increase resolution. As what that does is attempt to make the gpu work harder so as to balance out there with the gpu does so the cpu isn’t being pushed all the way to it’s limit. So if your playing say at medium settings for details, turn it up to high or ultra and see if the cpu is getting maxed out. Or hook it to a higher resolution panel temporarily and you would likely find that the stutters diminished or go away. The 3700x now though has to be pushing 5 years old so it may be just natural as well that it’s having a harder time keeping up.
