Looking for some help regarding newer computer parts. It's been almost 8 years since I built my first tower, and while at the time I considered myself to be fairly knowledgeable in the parts scene, I have no idea what is good and what isn't nowadays.

Basically, I am looking to upgrade my PC to something that can moderately handle newer games. My current setup is this:

  • i5 4690k
  • MSI Z97S
  • 16gb DDR4 (?)
  • R9 390
  • EVGA 650W 80+ Gold
  • M.2 SSD 500gb (?)

I have a friend who is offering to give me his MSI B450 and Ryzen 3600 to help upgrade. So, I am wondering what GPU (and any other parts that are recommended) I should pair with these to maximize power without bottlenecking. Budget is roughly $300 (new or used).

Appreciate any help!

For $300 you should be able to find an RX 6700XT. It's the best bang for your buck, it's really too powerful for 1080p (not that it's a problem), about right for 1440p and can do 4K with setting turned down.

Going forward, with a BIOS update, that board could be upgraded from the 3600 to a 5800X3D, this would be a nice future upgrade.

Did you get ram? If not a 32gb kit of ddr4 should run about 50 bucks. As the person above said look at the 6700xt, if that’s too much then maybe a 6650xt.
I’m not home atm, but I believe I upgraded to 16gb DDR4 a couple years back.

Wasn’t sure what the standard was for games today but that will definitely be something I add alongside the gpu.

Thanks!
