"PC Vendors Cautious About High Cost of Windows 8 PCs"

What this means is that Microsoft has finally set some standards for their new operating system. For YEARS oems have been ripping you off and that came to light when they shipped Windows Vista with ONLY 256Mb ram (At the lowest) or more often 512Mb. Who got the blame? Microsoft.

As for Windows 8... grow up, adapt and maybe stop bitching as Windows 8 has basically provided you, as a user a new organised desktop for shortcuts and a better search function (Amongst other things). It's not a tremendous change, it's not life changing and if most of you used it for more than a day you might get used to it.

Frustrated? A bit. Why? ANYTHING to bitch and moan about (But then again that's what I've just done so shame on me).

P.s. "The omission of the programs tab in the start menu is stupid."
I can't count TWO users in my company that use the programs tab. Not two and that includes me. SHORTCUTS

P.P.s Most people have laptops so what better way to get them to upgrade than a laptop with a touch screen. The cycle continues.

[citation][nom]thefiend1[/nom]Unless they decide to not support windows 7 anymore to force people into upgrading to windows 8, like they did with XP.[/citation]
Windows XP still has extended support till 2014.

I'm sorry but the tech community is quite small and the general public decide what works or what doesn't.

You can bet that anybody who complains to me about their new Windows 8 PC will promptly be offered a free upgrade to Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Linux dominates nearly every genre of computing from cellphones to servers, it's about time it took over the desktop too.

xbox live on pc ... err i mean windows 8 is doomed to fail , even the pc vendors can see this!

that aside mretro looks just like that ugly mess xbox live turned into last major update Ms did. reminds me of a mini market paoster board chalked full of ads and crap , I swear if windows 8 is crammed with BS ads they sure as f--- better not charge 300 bucks for the OS. but then again I doubt the os would do good if it was given away free, no ads.

I just hope they keep the start button and no crap menus in some versions like Profissional or Ultimate or something! This or I'll stick with my 30-day free windows 7 Ultimate =)

There will be regular laptops , and tablet PCs : so nothing new. And i think the OS isn't overly heavy. So there is nothing wrong with the situation ,except for Mircosoft , because touch sensitive monitors and laptops wont reach high market share.

I havent tried W8 hand-on, but what about a no-touch screen ala kinect for the interface. That coupled with voice controls and a customizable GUI would work for me. This would allow you to use whatever interface fits the type of work you're doing for the ultimate flexibility.

It is possible to express your point of view without being a douche. Grow up.

This has nothing to do with software and everything to do with hardware.

Sounds like these "panel shaking" comments are just an excuse to not put touchscreens in laptops due to the added expense.

I like all the generalisations made here by people that seem to have not actually previewed windows 8 other than what they have seen in the videos (metro UI, etc etc) it is quite sad that a technology and hardware site are full of such sad pandas everyone so negative to change. What I read in this article is Windows 8 is ahead of the game and hardware vendors cannot cope with the demands of making "newer" technology readily available for reasonable prices. I work with touch screens regularly doing what I do and have never run across "driver" issues for mouse support etc. like people have claimed. The main issue with a touch screen is sometimes dead patches will arise in areas of the screen that are used more regularly which can be an issue but that is mostly with excessive or long term use. All those claiming that it will be poor for games and that they dislike the Metro UI need to read information on the system before making stupid statements like this as most people know Windows 8 is running off of less resources therefore slight improvement of speed over Windows 7. It has optimised boot settings for an almost 20-30 seconds faster boot AND the main one of all if you don't like the metro UI it TURNS OFF!!!! /facepalm so many trools and uneducated people make the world a sad place. Innovation people get with it.

How many people here have actually used Windows 8? You don't have to use a touch screen and tile interface.

Thinking you need a Start Button is like the old guy at my job that won't upgrade from Windows XP. An interface like Google Chrome's New Tab page, but customizeable is ideal.

I can't believe how many people have jumped on the "Bash Windows 8" bandwagon and nobody is acknowledging the fact that Google Chrome's Log-in so you keep the same links everywhere is handy. I get to use the same settings at work and at home. That's all Windows 8 really is at it's core--the same settings, experience, and data on your desktop, laptop, phone, or tablet--that's actually really handy so long as it can accommodate device specific settings such as tiles for a phone and something mouse-oriented for a desktop.

[citation][nom]matt_b[/nom]Consumers that have had the "privilege" of test-driving the new OS have had the same consensus for months now. As said, this is going to be a novelty, it will wear off shortly, and people will be rummaging for their mice and keyboards. I cannot get over how stubborn MS would be to continually push forward with this thing even with all of the consumer negativity BEFORE it even launches. Keep it off of our desktop computer guys.........[/citation]Do you have any idea what you're talking about? Have you even bothered to test-drive Windows 8? It's intended to be used with a mouse and keyboard, but still functional through touch input on a tablet--unlike Windows 7, which is non-functional on a tablet or phone. Adding support for a normal Windows experience on a phone or tablet is smart, not stubborn.

You know people use the word douche like its a bad thing. It's a good thing. Imagine the world without douches. It'd be rotten....really.

Haha--the trolls thumbed down my earlier post because I didn't blindly bash Windows 8. Seriously, use something before you bash it. For example, I KNOW I don't like Apple products because I've used them (iPod, iPhone, lots of Macs...okay, the iPhone was cool when it was the only non-Blackberry smartphone). Windows 8 handles power states and multiple CPU cores better and you can turn off Metro.

People seem to be missing a HUGE point here, windows 8 is also a desktop interface you can deiced not to use metro and its been shown to use less resources then even 7,with some ui tweeks on your side your basically talking about a 7 with apps that you dont have to use but CAN and a less resources used its a win.

I never thought I would be looking at Linux Mint..... but I am now.

The arrogance at MS is approaching that of what occurs that the cursed FRUIT company.

I hope that some OEM makers like HP and Dell offer a preinstalled version of Linux or Ubuntu

I have a feeling that Linux could see a increase in usage that they couldn't have dreamed of just a few years ago.

I have one word for you: Unity

[citation][nom]hasten[/nom]If I wanted apps I would get an iSomething. But I'm somewhat of a power user and will never use an iSomething.[/citation]You realize that .exe and .msi install packages will still work, right? Because it really just sounds like you're hopping on a hate bandwagon.
