If I spend $100 on a psu rated at 500w, I should have a reasonable expectation that it will produce 500w, and not start going south after 50% load and be next to useless after 80% load. If that were the case, the psu should be labeled as a 300w unit. Or am I alone in wanting to get the performance I'm paying for?

Aye, not alone.

You are alone. Along with the rest of us. See how I did that?

Sorry, I had to after the recent meme I heard about iIdiots (Apple fanatics) referred to in this way. Apple users are all unique, in the exact same way. Huh?

I'm not talking about tier-5 junk. I doubt anything on tier-3 is so bad that it has wandered out of spec; possibly not even the tier-4 stuff goes that far.
A good example here is probably the Corsair CX line. Short-lived under loads, it shouldn't be a problem if never taken over 40%, and kept cool even then.

Rebates are a time-wasting game that I don't care to play. State a price, and if your product is worth that price, I'll pay it. Don't waste my time with rebates, especially since, historically, they are not a certainty.

I agree with both sides of this. I'd much prefer to see the cost, just be the cost. I have however, NEVER had any trouble getting a rebate fullfilled through EVGA. I've had a couple of OTHER issues with EVGA recently, since they seem to want as much for a set of stock cables as the unit cost originally, but no issues getting a rebate fullfilled from them.

I have tweaked the settings of my pcpartpicker account to exclude rebates and also to add on 10% tax to items. I like doing it this way because when I post a build for somebody, they know that's the max they are going to be paying, whereas when other people post builds, the purchasers end up paying another $100 because of tax and because rebates were included in the initial price.

Not sure where you are seeing it for $25. Only place I have seen is Newegg, and it would be like $45 shipped. That 450b would probably be a decent OEM PSU replacement, for those wanting to use a GTX 750ti, or 950 (75w). The 500b is not far off in price, though.

On Newegg with the rebate, if you like rebates.

Edit: They got rid of the rebate now.

And I don't care how you "tweak" your PCPartpicker account, it's never going to be entirely accurate because the shipping, etc., that it says is included in the final price, pretty much never is. There is too much that's not accurate on PCPartpicker for it to every be 100%. Mostly this is the fault of the vendors, not of PCPartpicker. NCIXUS for example, never properly includes the price of shipping on any item shown on PCPartpicker, for most items. It's hit an miss with every one of them. Newegg and Amazon are USUALLY fairly accurate, the rest have ups and downs.

I never said it was accurate, but an overestimate is better than an underestimate.

I hope that doesn't stand for barbecue.

You know what's strange? There's never been a single review of an NEX B unit. Well, it seems like there is one at hitechlegion.com but I've never heard of that site so I don't feel like going to it. Unsure if they have legit reviews or not. Anyway, if the BQ are made by HEC instead of FSP, then I'd say they won't be very good purchases. Heck, the GQ aren't the best either.

darkbreeze, I love how you took the time to photoshop the unit in front of a barbecue

HTL is based in the UK, I believe, and they are a rather well known site over on that side of the pond. While not in quite the same catagory as JG, TPU, guru3d etc, they still do a respectable review, tailored more towards average readers than techies. Turkey, you'd not really like them, they just cover the general basics, not the in-depth-every last erg of info-perfect coverage that you want from a review.

Like Guru3D reviews, don't really test anything at all. I don't like their PSU reviews; it's more of an overview than a review.
