I ordered 2 copies of HP. Will upgrade 2 PC's. One from XP Pro and one from Vista HP. I plan on using 64 bit on both. My son has been running the 64 bit RC and reports no problems and a very stable system. There may be price breaks in the future, but somehow I doubt it will ever go as low as $49.99.

While I like Win7, I have a copy of Vista 64 Ultimate and I still use XP for almost everything. My webcam and my scanner, while a little older and still perfectly usable, do not function under Vista and 7. Instead of buying new scanner and webcam, I dual-boot XP and Vista64. I'll be sticking with XP until there is no more support, then I will get an OEM version of Win7.

ABsolutely. I've been running XP for several years now and Win7 RC was the first OS that I wanted to change to. Picked up the max of 3 licenses for Home Premium. It's about the same price as the family pack will be anyways.

I figured OEMs would be around the same price at launch so I did not opt to pre order. I also get free Microsoft products (except office) through school.

I would had buy a preorder OEM version.

never an upgrade, wich is a real pain if I need to reinstall.

I like win 7 even more that I liked XP.
Win XP was 2 years old when I purchased the first computer capable of running it well enough. Win 7 RC runs perfectly on my old X2 3600+ 2Gb.

An important reason to delay windows 7 purchase is that Win 7 still have some issues, particularly with driver support in 64 bit. And I will not be surprised if the final version does not solve it.

If I need to buy new hardware, the Win7 purchase goes to the boootom priority.

NO! The pricing scheme has convinced me to switch to Ubuntu...I'm still working with the learning curve...but I feel much better about learning a FREE OS rather than a bloated overpriced one.

I have tested 7. That's part of my job. What do I run at home: XP, OpenSuse and Fedora. Will I upgrade XP: No. Will I recommend to my clients to upgrade: No. As a matter of fact I am testing multiple Linux versions to build a replacement upgrade for XP once MS kills it. MS mega argument for the anti trust suit was that a split up would harm the company to innovate. MS did definitely not fulfill this principle since xp.

No

"Nevertheless, we imagine that for most of you the chance to buy a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade license for $49.99 when the regular price is $119.99 is one that's hard to pass up."

You were joking right? I didnt even have to think about it, it was VERY easy to pass up. There is no reason to buy it.

On a new system maybe, but not to upgrade if you are using xp.

Why is there no poll? I really was curious of the numbers of Tom's readers of who did or didn't.

I for one, did. Ordered 3 upgrade licenses of Windows Home Premium. Too cheap and too great of an operating system not to. Also ordered 5 upgrade licenses of Professional for here at work.

Got myself a pro version. First time I've ever bought an OS, I either used pirated copies of win98 back in the day as a highschool student, or got my OS's for free through my university.

Yep, sure did. I was still running XP 32 bit. It's good, but then moved to Windows 7 beta 64 bit, found I can still run some of my old 32 bit games with it. It's time for the new OS.

I think XP is getting a little long in the tooth and deserves to be replaced. Microsoft does seem to have their act together on this one.

Win7RC seems to work well overall, even on older machines that do NOT meet the recommended requirements. My wife, son, and I would have reserved the maximum number of copies for our desktops and laptops. The primary reason that we did not is how we went from a 2 income household to a 1 income household. The Ponzi economics present to Microsoft!
