I keep 4 gaming machines running for my self, wife and kids.
1: core i7 920@ 3.8 GHZ 3gb ram 2.6tb storage 9800gx2 24" LCD $1800
2: core 2 Duo E8400 @ 4.2ghz 2gb ram 500gb HDD 4870 512mb 20" LCD $1500
3: phenom II 940 @ 3.8ghz 2gb ram 500gb hdd 8800 gts 512 20" LCD $1200
4: Athlon x2 4000 @ 2.8 ghz 2gb ram 500gb hdd 8800 gts 512 19" lcd $1000

Its about time to upgrade #4 system to phenom II as well. I would have already, but the user is only 7 years old, and "sponge bob games" not really resource heavy. Haha.

Gosh, I don't even know. My last upgrade cost me over $1,500 - without the case, monitor, keyboard, PSU, speakers, and video card. If you add all of that together, I guess the total would be about $2,700.

Core i7 920 @ 3.2GHz
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 F5 BIOS (still doesn't fix dual-boot)
6GB G.Skill DDR3-1600
2xVelociraptors in RAID-0
750GB backup drive
9800GTX (yea, I know...)
19" ViewSonic VX922 (again, I know. Don't remind me)
SATA DVD-RW (with lightscribe lol)
Thermalright Ultra 120 True Black (lapped, with 109CFM Cooler Master fan)
Thermaltake Armor case with upgraded fans
SB X-Fi Gamer sound card
Logitech 5.1 speakers - only 70watts RMS but they work
Logitech G11 keyboard
Logitech gaming mouse - forgot the model number but it's OK
Vista Ultimate 64

Next upgrades will be one or two 22-23" monitors and a better video card.

i just got a new system for about $400, not including the peripherals.

in 98' i got my first system for about 3k but that included a $1k monitor that i still use today.

amd phenom 2.2ghz looking to upgrade to a amd phenom 2 3ghz overclock a little
a gigabyte 790fx mobo
4gb of dual channel 1066mhz ddr2 gskill is cheap
zalman cooler big copper thing
my key board broke and now i am stuck with a all dell key board and mouse
crappy case and that about it.

I built my first PC in the winter of 1988-1989 for $130, a couple of bucks for 2nd hand parts at a throw; IBM expansion case was my case, old Sony Trinitron 4-color CRT, only new parts were the 286-12 and 1Mg of RAM. Since then I've been upgrading a part or two here and there consistently, adding systems as rebuilds of continually leftover parts until I had three networked in the house. New parts only for the last dozen years. So I'd be guessing to say over the years I've spent about $4-5000 on hardware, another $2000 on software, mostly OS & games, a few really neat & productive apps. Doesn't seem like that much but then I generally stay a generation behind on hardware; just can't ever seem to afford bleeding edge. But then again, as I've read many product reviews over the years, I've learned what products are the better bet from the bleeding edge folks like Tom's staff, saving myself from spending a lot of cash for crap.

My computer cost me all together 2,1oo dollars. This was mainly due to i went through two graphic cards in like 4 months. I went from a GTX 260 192core to an AMD 4850 X2 so that is mainly why the cost of my computer was so much.
Current Specs are:
Q6600 @ 3.2 GHZ
8 GB Corsair Ram DDR2 800
Ati Sapphire 4850 x2
MSi 750i mobo
Antec P One 180
Zalman 850 watt power supply
Acer 20" Monitor
G15 Keyboard
MX518 Gaming mouse.

I built this computer a year ago with an old 8800gs and just added to it. It was worth every penny..

Intel Q6700 (OC'd to 3.0GHz)
Lian Li case
EVGA 8800GTS 640MB
Vista Ultimate
4 74GB WD Raptors (RAID 10)
2 36GB WD Raptors
1TB WD Black
Sony DVD LightScribe burner
ASUS P5K3 MB
Corsair 4GB DD3
Enermax 720W PS
DangerDen water cooling
tons of extras
=$4200

P.S. I remember spending $500 for 16MB of RAM in 1995. That hurt!

HTPC - $400 - custom build AMD 4600+/8GB Ram/780G Gigabyte board
Laptop - $349 - Acer Aspire 15.4" semprom 3000+ (i think it's the 3030)
Compaq SR1950NX - $229 on boxing day 2 years ago
Xebian HTTP Servers (2 of them) - $50 for the old xbox 1s, and then $250 for a total of four 320gb hard drives to put in them.

$1500 laptop in July '08

C2D, 4GB, 8800 GTS 515 MB, Blu-ray, 5 speakers, 20.1 inch monitor, etc etc etc.

For the money it was the best thing going at the time (in my opinion)

I spent $1300 on my Core i7 build. 6 GB of ram, Geforce 285, CoolerMaster HAF case... The only parts I used from my old computer was speakers, optical drive, and monitor. So those included, i'm at about $1500 bucks.

yay!! i have a $1500 dollar video game machine!

Heh, I don't really remember. I'm currently using an old Dell with a 1.8GHz P4 and 512MB RAM. Really teaches you to optimize. But hey, it plays Starcraft!
I plan on getting a new computer for about $900, possibly up to $1000 very soon.

i7 for $229, 6GB Patriot for $98, 9900LED Zalman cooler for $79, Element S case for $139, 850W Antec PSU for $229, $100 for Seagate 1TB, $24 for Sony OEM DVD-R. I transferred my two 8800GTX's ($169 now ea), 150GB Raptor ($50), XFi ($25), and use my old 24" SyncMaster monitor ($200). So...

$898 new
$613 old
$1511

3K per machine.
generally bought over 5 months in 3 times. 3 x 1000 €.
first thing i buy is motherbord, RAM, CPU, case, peripherals (not the screen)
second thing the graphics card , main HDD RAID
last thing the screen, printer( sometimes, scanner, external hdds)

everything gets changed every 18 months except the screen which lasts 24 to 30 months.

About $650 to upgrade to i7 920 + Asus P6T + 6GB DDR3-1333 + Nox PSU Cube 700W.

I reused the case, 17" CRT, N7950GT 512MB, 2x Raptor 74GB 10K-rpm and floppy.

I left a P4 530, Asus P5GDC Deluxe, 2x Patriot 1GB LLK CL2.0, OEM PSU 300W.

I'm very happy with the upgrade for now, despite i'm unable to install VMWare ESX 3.51 ... :-(

I have spent close to $3,000 on mine. What I figured if you want to have the best for the money then you got to spend it. The system is named Frankenstein since it is huge and loud with over 8 fans going full blast in it.

Around 1200 USD for my i7 920, MSI Eclipse mobo, GTX 260, 3x2 gigs ram for it. I had already my case and PSU, a sound card I'm fond of, speakers and monitor I like (or am at least content with) The case was close to $200 USD when I bought it (tt Armor +), the PSU $190 (PC Power and cooling silencer 750), the Speakers $99 (M-Audio Studiopro 3), the monitor was about $180, the sound card $90 (Asus Xonar DX). I guess I also own a G15 keyboard, a G5 Mouse, and a G13 gamepad, a Plantronics Gamecom 377 headset...hmmm about $2250 USD over the long haul. Though a lot of the components I had already, I spent $1200 in Dec. on the mobo, cpu, gpu, memory, and OS that makes it into the computer it is today, the other stuff I already had.
