[citation][nom]ultameca[/nom]After almost 2 months of windows 8, I am being driven mad... I should have saved that hdd error I had last night and today and then all of a sudden windows starts reporting I'm out of space when I should have 3 and a half gigs left on the ssd.. reboot and it's 3 gigs again... that's if you can reboot..[/citation]
Instead of calling you an idiot like others, you may have a hardware error, but also in your C drive as well as a Windows folder do you have a Windows.old folder, which will be the size of your whole previous install and taking up huge amounts of space? Google to look at the removal method and seriously consider a fresh install instead, you make be crashing if your swap file is hitting the remaining 3gb on C drive

See? that was civilised and helpful wasn't it, why don't more people do that instead of being pig-ignorant trolls?

[citation][nom]A Bad Day[/nom]Because the computer is too slow to handle the default mode?[/citation]

Classic mode in xp gives more vertical screen space while displaying the same content. It is more efficient at using screen space. The non classic themes waste screen space by simply adding empty space around everything, just look at the stock windows 7 task bar, it is more than twice the height of the classic bar and displays no additional info. In fact, it displays less info as items are not titled.

Well, since I stopped using Win98 about 12 YEARS AGO, I cannot vouch for the FUD you just spouted.

So you're telling me that using Classic Mode means my 19" CRT (which obviously you're using since you don't seem to like change), will display MORE *** on it than my U2410? Really?

And SRSLY?- you need your tabs titled? You can't tell it's a PDF or an IE tab simply by looking at the ICON? WOW.

Already suggested that.

It's called clutching at straws and hoping you don't call his bluff, non-technical people really shouldn't try this anti-8 thing cos it just makes them look stupid

@ apache_lives Your just ignorant, I've been using computers since DOS, I built my i7 920 system from scratch and water cooled it.. I think you missed the part where I said windows 7 worked rock solid for a year. In fact I'v been hackentoshing since before it got easy to do. I would be duel booting with osx but it doesn't support my 6970, but that was my mistake because I knew it wasn't supported yet before I purchased it.

@irh_1974 Thank you for trying to help, it's not likely a hardware error though, all of my drives are clean and in working order and I got rid of my old files right away after the upgrade when I didn't think I would want to downgrade. I had no problems with 7 and only started having problems about a week into windows 8.. I am going to try a fresh install though as it could be issues with upgrading. Actually I've been using computers since DOS, I built mine from premium components and it's not that old, also it's watercooled, even the mobo, so degradation from heat isn't likely a problem.

I'm actually really surprised people keep thinking it's a hardware error though. Linux, OSX, win 7 all rock solid.

I was actually really surprised that some people like you have responded so well to my comments and real discussion has resulted from it rather than just hate flinging.

I don't hate windows I just want it to be done right. Stable, clean, fresh design.. isn't that what we all want?

It sounds like we have the same setup and I have zero issues. If you did a download for your OS, do a checksum on it. If you have the DVD, use the Win7 DVD to USB tool and install from the USB.

And not to out-Kung-Foo you, but I've been working with PCs since the TRS80 Model II days...

EDIT: Of course I read what you wrote...I'm still laughing. Still, blaming Win8 on this is pointless.

@_TuxUser_ Thank you for the thoughtful insights, that makes a lot of sense and it sounds like Microsoft needs a shake-up, not just management but the whole company needs to overhaul the way it works. Microsoft won a lot of faith back from me with windows 7 so I was pretty shocked with 8.

Don't get used to it, those days are LONG gone around here, all the combined arm-chair experts in here couldn't offer a single helpful suggestion if their life depended on it

That's only when dealing with Microsoft, Apple, Google, Linux, Windows, Gaming, OS's in general, or technical issues. Otherwise it's pretty civil in here. :gun:

Cool, so as long as I talk about XBMC, Raspberry Pi or booth-babes at CES i'm just fine and dandy

@NewbieTechGodII at least now you are talking reasonably, but still my computer worked fine on win 8 for about the first week, these issues started cropping up later. I already did everything you said the first time I installed it and I know upgrade isn't the best but it worked fine for once and at this point MS should be doing the upgrade right. After win 7 working so well I figured it would be OK to try it as an upgrade, however as I said in my post I am going to do an install from scratch today and give it another shot, I really am giving windows 8 my all. after a couple months there are some things I grew to like and some things that drive me nuts.

For example I like to jump strait to my computer, one icon on the bottom bar, that pins to the explorer icon though which I don't like, I do like having it on the new menu though but I can't make a custom icon from oblytile because it won't accept that location as an address so I'm pining it to the menu the winows 8 way which gives me a pretty crappy icon there which looks bad and I don't like. I can't change it, can't even just swap the tile with a picture.. honestly how hard would it have been for ms to allow us to change up crappy icon tiles with proper pics?

Updates don't always work well, sometimes it says there is app updates but then I go in and the updates aren't there, sometimes they are and download but don't install, and then other times it actually works.. but what really gets me is that you go to updates but it doesn't even tell you what's new about the updates.

The button I was referring to is the close, max and minimize buttons on the windows and again I'm pretty sure Microsoft is the only company still making massive ugly borders around all the windows, I could be wrong on that though.

These are just a couple of the criticisms and likes I have for win 8, I don't see people posting this kind of detail but maybe it's because I'm a graphic designer that this stuff bothers me. Windows 8 has potential but, I feel Microsoft made a lot of design mistakes.

My original idea was to boot into osx for general usage and just use windows 8 for games os I didn't care about metro but that was also assuming it would run stable and maybe it will for me.

One more thing I thought I made clear was that these issues occur most of the time but not every time, for example it now appears to shut-down properly again. no drive errors today and yesterday was the only time I had those errors. also I can understand how a few people may have misunderstood my issue with my main drive running out of space but it my system wasn't expanding the swap file and I 6 gigs of ram is enough to make it not use the swap when I'm idle on the desktop...

as a side note I used to use a similar machine when I was a little kid in school, but I think you still still one upped me because that machine looks pretty old, ours were similar but probably a little newer but I still remember when software came on big ass black floppy disks and if you wanted to do anything you had to put one in...

do you remember that game where you had to use maths to land a spaceship on the moon?

HA!

Ohh btw sorry about my last post that pretty much looks like a second article lol, I could have written a real article and way longer but who would want to read that.

Cool story, bro!
Almost no one
TL;DR

@back_by_demand I was TL;DR - ing myself, that was sarcastic at the end I wasn't being serious... and that post was actually really just meant for the person I was replying too. The apology was real though because I know how much people hate long posts.

Yeah, well, um...I could not understand what it is you're trying to say there. As in, it's written poorly and it makes comprehension a little difficult for me.

Are you multibooting your system right now? If you have Win7, wipe your SSD and do a clean install of it and load all your apps and run it for a few weeks and see what happens. If it's all good, then do a clean install of Win8 and see what happens. You could be having a particular app that doesn't play well and it could be mucking up your system.

Yes, the Store does not tell you what the updates to apps entails. I'm not too worried about it.

If you want to multiboot, I suggest using a VHD instead of the traditional means (VM, normal multiboot). VHDs don't have the issues that VMs have and it's much easier eliminating a VHD without mucking up the MBR.

Finally, there is answers.microsoft.com...try that out.

Just kidding, if all you are using Windows 8 for is gaming then remove all the tiles from the Start screen apart from an App called Steam Tile, it allows you to pin a Live Tile for each game in your Steam collection to the Menu, very nice as it scrolls live info about the games, looks pretty sweet when all you have is game tiles - also get a bit of freeware called Windows 8 Start Screen Customiser and have real wallpaper behind it instead of stupid monocolour background, mirrors your Desktop wallpaper too so it can cycle through your babes collection (or whatever your poison is)

@NewbieTechGodII I see that now, when I said my computer I meant, My computer as in the location where you can see all of your disks & devices, I guess it's just called computer now and probably was in 7 too. oblytile is a 3rd party software that allows you to make windows 8 tiles with your own pics, replacing the ugly tiny icons that appear in metro.

That should clear it right up for you and I understand someone who isn't a power user wouldn't care what the updates are doing for you but for me it's a big deal, I want to know what's new and test it out or what to look for as a new benefit.

I am not multi booting, that was what I wanted to do but, as I explained I can't because there is no 6970 support in osx but, if I did I would put one OS per disk and hit f12 when booting.

Why do you people keep thinking I need help I was only explaining the issues I'm having with windows 8 that I didn't have with windows 7, same software installed on both. No I'm not running 7 as I said I upgraded to 8 from 7 and it worked fine.

People keep telling me to wipe my drive clean and install a fresh copy however if you really read my first post you would know I'm a competent user and was already planning on doing just that. You would also know that this is the first time I have ever done an upgrade rather than a fresh install.

@back_by_demand Thank you that is actually a big deal to me, I love steam and was using oblytile for that purpose so ill give that software a shot because it sounds like it will just do that automatically. I'm also sure that it's not one of the metro apps causing the problems.
