Question Ryzen 7 3700x CPU package too hot?

Hi All,

Built my first gaming PC, so I am still really new to all of this stuff.

I have a Ryzen 7 3700 x with the Wraith Prism installed which initially came with pre applied thermal paste.. CPU was between 35 - 50 idle and my cpu package (not sure what this even is) is usually between 35 - 59 idle.. I got worried so I cleaned the original thermal paste and reapplied some gorilla thermal paste.. Just used a pea size blob and let the fan spread this.

The temps look like the same and have not improved..

My concern is if these temps are too high for when the computer is idle? Someone one told me the AMD tend to run a little hotter than intel..

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

p.s motherboard temp is 30 - 40 idle

PC Specs:

GPU:
Zotac RTX 2060 Super 8gb Ram
CPU: Ryzen 7 3700 x stock
Motherboard: ATX Asus x570 TUF Gaming Plus WIFI
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 Memory Kit
PSU: EVGA Supernova 750w PSU
Operating System & Version: Windows 10 Pro
Fans - 3 - 1 120mm x back, 2 140mm x front

its up and down from 35 - 50

I am using software which comes with the motherboard ASUS TUF (Performance and power saving utilities)

Case airflow is not too bad (i hope) using the Antec df500 dark fleet, although the back of the PC is like 5 - 6 inches away from the wall.

Room temp is - around 22 - 23

I have a Ryzen 9 3900X and can confirm the new AMD CPUs run hot... My CPU with the Corsair H115i RGB Platinum AIO runs about 50-60 degrees at idle and peaks at 95 degrees under load. I originally had the AMD Wraith Prism air cooler and the Corsair did not improve the temps at all except when under load (and only by five degrees). What made me decide on the Corsair was the roar of the AMD's fan when the CPU is under load.

Something must be wrong with your cooling. Are you sure everything connected and installed right way ? My 3700x even OC-ed to 4.4 GHz doesn't hit 70c even after full and prolonged load cooled by single radiator CM 140 pro. Idles about 10-15c above room temperature.

According to Anandtech, the 2700X burned 86 watts at full load on all cores and threads running 100%, the 3700X burned 74 watts and the 3900X hit 118 watts, 37% higher than the 2700X and 55% higher than the 3700X...

The thermal differences is primarily because the 3900X has 12 cores and 24 threads, the 3700X/2700X has only eight cores and 16 threads as the bottom graph indicates...

Most folks' definitions of 'idle' need some work...

Just becuase you jhave not started any games or applications does not really mean the CPU is 'idle' as Windows itself automatically starts/stops several processes during teh first several minutes of operation, like cloud syncing of storage, indexing of file contents, AV scans, etc...

If you see your clock speeds (assuming in Balanced mode, while monitoring both task manager and HWMonitor ) down to 800-1000 MHz, then you are more likely to be int he 35C range. But, even moving the mouse around will spike a core up by 1-2 GHz, resulting in instantaneous jump to 55C, etc..

In short, it is perfectly normal to see temps jump from 35C to 50-55C then back down to 35C a few times/several times per minute...

you may induce a fairly heavy all-core cpu load (not quite as intense as Prime95 small FFTs) to check temps with CPU-Z/bench/stress CPU...

Thank you all for your messages.

I upgraded my Wraith Prism to Deepcool 360mm AIO as the location of my PC is in some what off a closed location (Underdesk). The back of the PC is around 6 inches away from the wall, the top of the PC has around 12 inches from the top desk and the front is completely free (I hope that makes sense).

After installing the AIO its definitely helped with the CPU temps.

My next question is on my fan set up:

Fan setup:
2 x 140mm fans located at the top which is blowing air ou.
1 x 120mm located at the back blowing air out.
3 x 120mm fans attached to radiator which is bringing air in

  1. Is the above overkill?
  2. Does it make sense the way my fans have been set up?
  3. Is there any harm in leaving them configured this way?
  4. I have used AI Suite to configure the fans for optimum use.

Any recommendations?

Thanks again
