Hello ,

What if my HDD drive breaks down completely and won't spin around even
when power is on... I saw on CSI Miami that they open up a defected
Drive and take out the disks inside, then replace them in a same model
HDD to restore the files from the disks... IS this POSSIBLE???
If so is there a guide at all out there that explains us how to do this.
My seagate broke down and I don;t want other folks to look through
my files... Can I do it some how ???

Please advise

Thank you

LOL... Don't believe everything you see on tv.

Now to answer your questions:

Is what CSI showed technically possible? Yes. It is technically possible.

Will you be able to do it in your home? Well, yes, and you MIGHT get lucky and have it work - for a few minutes - but trust me, Don't try it.

Hard drives are enclosed on purpose. The air inside them is ultra-filtered so that no dust of some ridiculously small size can get between the heads and the disks. If you open the drive up to replace the platters you will be introducing dust the relative size of Mt. Everest to the system, and a catastrophic crash is inevitable.

If you were to attempt it, even in a filtered environment, then the dust may only be the relative size of the Alps instead of Mt. Everest. Also, there are error translation tables (also called redirection blocks) stored in ROM on the drive's circuit board that would be lost, so the data may not be completely accessible even then.

If you want that done, call the professionals - OnTrack, Seagate, and there are others I'm sure, and be prepared to pay. They are professionals, and they make information security guarantees, except, of course, in the case of child porn... :)
