Setting up AD

I am thinking of setting up a AD at home to test and learn for my AD cert. Now i was considering installing Server 2012 on my laptop and using that as my AD server.

I also have a desktop which i will be using to login to an AD profile. Now my question is do i need a switch for these devices to communicate or can i use my router.

My router is a DIR-815

You should be able to use your router as a switch. Just assign the router a non conflicting IP, turn off its DCHP and use a LAN port to connect it to your network. That should take care of it!
