Fazers, It doesnt matter whos wrong, whos right, who's got the better opinion..

Its all down to how people think that makes a difference... Some people are one track minded, some people dont think out of the box....

All I know is this... AMD and Intel are as bad as each other and as good as each other.

What Jenny is peeved off about is that Intel hold the performance crown.. Period... AMD hold the budget crown

its Marks and Spencer or Asda.. :)

I use AMD and Intel and i just spoke to one of my suppliers and its now at a 50 50 rate where before intel was outselling amd 10 to 1. AMD need to be applauded for bring power to budget. Im ordering a x4 630 for the same price as a Intel 7400, and its a faster processor.

for me, the issue is chipsets all ways has been

What, now anything that jennyh says is bullshit?

Everything she does say is bull. So some stores in Asia are selling the chips early when there is a still NDA on the things. There are retail chips. I asked if they are ES's. And you can not order one online. Amazon listed them the other day for pre-order.

Yes everything she post's is bull.

Nonetheless few lucky people got hold. Also for those who said its just an ordinary Phenom; did an ordinary 2.8 Phenom OC easily to 4.2? I would also say no, so Thuban makes a difference.

In Stock: http://www.ncix.com/search/?categoryid=0&q=980x (A good supply of both OEM and Retail Models in stock)
GTX 470: http://www.ncix.com/search/?categoryid=0&q=GTX+470 <--- 5 cards total in stock (just like 1-3 days ago there were none in stock still).

Core i7 980x is not a mass produced processor... it is a niche product (it does got for a suggest retail price of ~$999 USD after all).

In Q3 2010... Intel will be releasing their second Hexacore product the Core i7 970 (around June - August 2010).

Oh and...

It appears that (at least in Cinebench) that the Core i7 860 is able to best a Phenom II X6 1055T clock for clock. It is, however, worth noting that this was the 32-bit variant of Cinebench. I would expect the 1055T (and the Core i7s for that matter) to produce better results than indicated in this image (under an x64 operating system that is).

wPrime results are interesting to say the least. You can find some results of other processors running wPrime bellow:
wprime.jpg

I'm not sure why more meaningful benchmarks are not being run (I find it odd) but if we rely on these tests as any indicator... a Phenom II X6 is competitive with a Core i7 (4 Core with HT) of the same clocks (with the two trading blows... one being faster than the other varying on the application).

The 1055T was around $300 USD (when you convert from Yen to USD but not an indication of final release price though).

That pretty much invalidates the "price/performance" argument if you're an existing AMD user (such as myself). That having been said... I'm looking forward to replacing the X3 720 with a 1055T myself (if the pricing is around or lower than $300 USD).

Interesting... very interesting.

I can see this being the future flamewars here on THG:

Intel Fans:
- They've been getting this level of performance for a year now
- They will argue that if you are an existing AMD user and you factor in the cost of your existing processor plus that of a Thuban... the "price/performance" argument is invalidated (*see bellow for an explanation)
- They will point to AMD needing 6 cores just to remain competitive with Intel's 4 cores.
- They will point to Core i7 970 being on the horizon.

AMD Fans:
- They will argue "Price/Performance" and Total platform cost being lower (looking at it from a new users perspective).
- They will likely attempt to frame Thuban as being the fastest CPU on the market (we're already seeing that here).
- They might emphasize it's overclockability.

Overall, this may pressure Intel into releasing a Core i7-grade Hexacore processor before they had planned to do so (initial plan for such a processor was Q4 2010/Q1 2011).

*If you're an AMD user who is upgrading... you're upgrading to Core i7 level performance (something available for over a year now). A Core i7 920 is around $280 USD. Therefore an AMD user will have paid ~$300 + the price of his/her existing processor to reach the performance level of a $280-$350 USD processor (pricing from around a year ago to today for a Core i7 920). AMD fans are likely to point to Intel motherboard costs which Intel fans will simply reply that the cheap AMD motherboard, that many of these AMD users have purchased, can't run Thuban. Therefore they may even have to purchase a new motherboard (several 770 based boards have been declared incompatible while quite a few 790 based boards cannot run a 150W CPU). Word on the street is that one of the more popular AMD "cheap" boards (the Gigabyte MA770-UD3) is incompatible with Thuban

I still find Thuban and Gulftown both worthless for the time. I went quad because it was something that was needed plus it had gotten cheap for the time. But for now, 6 cores is quite useless.

Most people with AM2+/AM3 or LGA1156/1366 do not need a 6 core or anything new until Sandy Bridge/Bulldozer at the earliest.

Intels Cougar platform is just like AMDs AM3. AM3 has 2 pins less than AM2/2+ (940 vs 938) but still works with AM2+. That means the new LGA1155/1365 can still work with LGA1156/1366.

And Jenny, just stop. Your comments are rude and not very useful. If you can't be civil and just let people have their opinions, then don't post at all.

BTW milki654, early Phenom IIs OCed to 3.8GHz on air, newer ones OCed to 4GHz but that 4.2GHz is in no way guranteed. Just because one person got it doesn't mean everyone will.

What ever reason, Jimmy, this thread will be locked just like the others. All down to one person.

AMD swings to first-quarter profit

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD 9.67, -0.49, -4.82%) on Thursday reported a first-quarter profit of $257 million, or 35 cents a share, compared with a loss of $416 million, or 66 cents a share, for the year-earlier period. Revenue was $1.57 billion, up from $1.18 billion for the same quarter in the year-earlier period. Adjusted income was 9 cents a share. The company's results included a one-time, non-cash gain of $325 million related to its deconsolidation of GlobalFoundries. Analysts had expected the company to post a loss of 3 cents a share, on revenue of $1.5 billion, according to data from Thomson Reuters.

Hmm, $257M - $325M = -$68M from actual product sales (CPU, GPU) vs. selling off the last part of AMD's fab asset interest.

Hehehe I just made a thread about that :)

You know what Fazers?

That's fine, that really is fine. In fact, I'm quite happy to dish it out and recieve in equal measure. The problems started to arise when certain mods started banning one of us and not the others.

Then more mods appear and do the same. While I'm quite happy giving you, elmo etc whatever I think your nonsense deserves, there is nothing I can do about rogue intel fanboy mods, and that is something this forum has a real problem with.

You lot got lucky, because JDJ wouldn't hand out a ban unless it was *really* bad. I mean come on really - what do I do? Ok nobody likes to be labelled stupid but if that's the worst I do is it really worth multiple bans?

I don't hate any of you because I don't hate anyone. What I feel is a mix of utter frustration combined with exasperation. Most of you are pretty smart people who *should* know better. Take yourself for example - how could you want your kids to grow up under the yoke of a handful of multi-billion dollar companies taking their cut out of their paychecks? That's exactly what it's all about Fazers. You aren't shy of having a go at your own government, but you are quite fine with companies like intel doing a lot worse? That doesn't make sense. It's sorta like me being a vegetarian (which I am) but not caring about animal testing.

I don't understand why you can be that way - because corporation and government is practically identical. These people are out to line their own pockets at OUR expense. Yes yes I know what you're gonna say next - AMD would do the same if they could. If that were true, why is Magny Cours so cheap compared to intels? Why are ATI graphics so cheap compared to nVidia's? Why will Thuban be so cheap compared to the i7's it *will* beat? It's because AMD aren't trying to maximise cash at the expense of everything else.

Values still mean something to a lot of people. Doing the right thing matters to a lot of people. When I see you and others try to twist words and give unyielding support for a corrupt company like intel...it is just beyond my comprehension why you would do that and it maddens me. Your stupidity maddens me, because there is no other word for it. You especially fazers, would just love to see AMD die off and accept sky-high monopoly prices for yourself, your kids, everybody - so long as intel 'wins' everything is ok.

There is something wrong with any person who feels that way, and I consider them to be beneath any right minded person. Others buy intel due to ignorance (I myself did many times in the past for that reason) or for other reasons that nearly make sense, but you don't have that excuse.

You seriously need to ask yourself what intel has done to deserve your undying support of them, and what AMD has done to get your undying disdain.

That's not entirely factual. I have been banned at least twice as often as you have (I think around 6 times now with two of those times being due to responses to you).

You lot got lucky, because JDJ wouldn't hand out a ban unless it was *really* bad. I mean come on really - what do I do? Ok nobody likes to be labelled stupid but if that's the worst I do is it really worth multiple bans?

I don't think you're painting the entire picture here. Not only do you insult fellow THG readers but you incite flame wars. To be quite honest... I was once quite a bit like you (personality wise). I'm getting better and better at controlling my emotions though. If you want I can help you with that. It made a world of difference for me.

You are so far off the mark it's scary and amusing at the same time.

If AMD were as bad as intel we'd hear about it. So far the only thing that can be held against AMD is Hector Ruiz making some mistake - deliberately or not - and what happened? AMD got rid of him asap. Yeah, bad bad AMD... 😗

The budget crown is what counts, or should do. 60% of intels revenue comes from 'Pentium' sales. That is way more than what AMD makes, regardless of having the 'budget crown'. The reason? People are ignorant. It's got nothing to do with getting the best, it's all about the ignorant masses buying intel because of an old catchy jingle 'intel inside' tune. Are they stupid? Sure they are, just like I was when I fell for it too. Anybody who buys based on advertising is stupid. We are supposed to be intelligent beings yet we are believing force-fed garbage from others instead of looking for ourselves.

And btw, I shop at Marks and Spencer, Asda, and Tesco too.

I dont know why you got banned so much, except for your part in the attempt to get me banned by your mates from that crappy little website. That was just plain low. I've been banned 5-6 times too.

You should know your benchmarks better. 32-bit cinebench is total fail for AMD. Check out the 64-bit bench and you'll see just how much things change.

Yes both get better, but the AMD gets a lot better while the intel doesn't.

Clearly my fanboi comment for some unknown reason really gets to her.

JennyH as soon as you realise you are a total AMD fan boy / girl then get over it.

What you fail to exert is you conversations start of good but loose it when you cant backup any of what you say later on when your ramblings are disproven, and still try and make AMD the Mecca of processors. Any one who says that no, im afraid AMD xyz processor is not faster gets framed as being a fanboi.....

I AM NOT A FAN BOI BUT I RESPECT 90 percent of the people on here, Fazers, Jimmy, Bad Trip, Warmon, JDJ, Mousemonkey, Randomizer - etc etc and anyone else who i forgotten ( for which i am sorry for ) and atleast they keep things in context and do not make wild accusations about any ones tech or make things up for the convenience of their loved hardware.

Keep things in context or go back to you AMD zone buddies...

You think your winding us up when most couldnt give a toss. you must be very angry going to bed at night Jenny, thats for sure.

JennyH... you really need to trust me.

I did not lead any "mates". I did seize the opportunity (I'll admit it) to further aggravate you though (thus leading to a ban).

SuperFly and I are sworn enemies (online enemies... like rivals). SuperFly is known as the resident forum A-Hole at Xcpus (he took that title from me as I have changed quite a bit over the years).

I don't hate you Jenny. I know it may be hard for you to take me seriously but I am really being sincere. When I make a thread I do try to remain as impartial as possible while remaining realistic to current market conditions (based on my bend towards a preference for overall performance).

I am completely up front and honest when I state that I am not an Intel fan (I like many of their products though and also dislike many of their products as well).

See if we can become friends and treat each other with respect... all of THG would benefit. You make some solid arguments (as I do) and some piss poor ones (as I do). If we work together rather than against one another... we can come up with a far more level headed realistic approach to things (and this would only lead to benefits for the THG readership).

I am sincere in extending this olive branch.

Peace,

Rick.

Ah so you like M&S muffins but ASDA meat, makes sense. BTW, Tesco are worse than Asda imho... Their food is dreadfull. No taste what so ever.

All together now

MONSTER MUNCH

I thought my post already made that statement in brackets. I was trying to be careful to ensure I highlighted how 32-bit performance is not a proper indicator of overall performance for Cinebench.

As for AMD benefiting more from x64 than Intel... I don't see how that could be the case other than the fact that the AMD processor we're looking at has 6-cores and therefore being able to address more than 2GB per core (of memory) with a total limit of 4GB would benefit a processor with more cores than one with fewer cores (in theory at least).

Elmo im going to add this to all the single track minded people out there on my signature..

whaddya recon :)

Bullshit is a place for which it is full of from bullocks.

That's a nice line lol. I used to get a kick out of pushing people's buttons but to be honest... I'm too old for this sh!t..lol (line from Lethal Weapon).

JennyH (under all of the inflammatory comments) is an intelligent person. She does remind me of myself (only a few years ago to boot).

If I can change... she can change. :)

I'd rather try and work to make THG a better more reasonable/rational place than simply pwning people :) If we can do that and work to contain knee jerk reactionary responses.. all of THG will benefit :)

Elmo I noticed a change in you a long time ago actually but when it's 'everybody vs me' then there will be collateral damage.

Go to AMDZone, try to be objective in your criticisms, see where you get.

That's me here, or it was me here in many ocassions. Sure there are threads where I've been downright out of order and a total embarrassment to myself, but over the piece most of it has been good.

Problem is, mods like MM will always just be waiting on the next time I mess up. I'm not asking for special dispensation, just to be treated equally. The very things you hate AMDZone for happens right here.

A lot of people get away with much worse stuff I have been banned for. Regardless, I have a pretty decent life away from THG 😀 and I don't really need this - it's just entertainment with a glass or two of wine before bed.

Don't get me wrong though, I feel strongly about the future and the types of corporations that we should allow to hold sway over us and our kids. I do not want my kids to grow up with apple phones, microsoft os, intel cpu, nvidia gpu and no real alternative, and this is something I will never, ever budge on.

Well that's just it - there are far more serious "wrongs" in the world than Intel's marketing schemes, no matter how shady some people think they may be. Seriously - you don't see Intel clubbing baby seals, poisoning baby formula to make a quick & dirty profit, selling WMDs, engaging in slave labor or genocide, etc etc. Why don't you take up a cause that is actually worth your time & energy?

Case in point: Why aren't you complaining about ATIC's treatment of workers, particularly immigrant women, in their home country, the UAE ?

Migrant workers were exploited and abused. Cases of torture and prolonged detention without trial were reported. Women continued to face legal and other discrimination. Access to certain websites was blocked. The authorities began to address the cases of stateless persons, or bidoun. One person was executed.

A woman, a UAE national, who married a foreign national abroad without her family’s permission was detained for eight months when she returned to the UAE in November 2007, ill-treated in prison, and threatened with prosecution for adultery, a capital offence. She was then returned to a relative and eventually left the UAE.

Ok check this out.

10041322408ada9df2a638c679.jpg

2.8ghz x6 = 4.59
2.8ghz i7 = 5.06

3.2ghz i7 = 5.48
3.5ghz x6 = 5.68

Note that these are still 32-bit benchmarks.

Notice how much better the x6 is scaling with clock speed? The i7 gains 0.42 score with 0.4ghz, while the x6 gains 1.09 score with 0.7 ghz. I've been looking out for this pattern and I believe it may be constant over a number of different benchmarks, for example a 3.8ghz Thuban appears to be very close to a 4.2ghz i7.

Clock for clock, I expect Thuban will be better than the i7 at high clocks and worse at lower clocks.

I actually understand where you're coming from JennyH. When you are being attacked from all angles.. it's..

1. Frustrating having to repeat the same arguments over and over to various people.
2. Corners you... this triggers a natural human behavioral response of wanting to lash out (like any animal would if cornered... we human beings are no different).

Ignoring insults thrown your way and deciphering the arguments from the insults in posts aimed at you is hard to do. I often edit my posts (frequently now). I do this because I proof read my posts often in an attempt to ensure that I give both sides a fair shake all the while remaining loyal to my personal preferred ideal (Overall Performance).

As for Corporatism... I am a fervent Left-Libertarian (a Socially conscious Liberal) so we're on the same page there.

Although I do acknowledge that most THG readers are Intel fans (it used to be AMD fans prior to 2006) and although I do agree with you that a sort of societal pressure here on THG is geared with a penchant for whomever is king of the hill (Intel right now) I wouldn't compare it entirely with AMDZone.

At AMDZone.. they IP ban you and the admins themselves do not like any sort of sentiment which could be construed as criticisms leveled at AMD (even when presented in a calm and respectful manner). THG is different in that respect.

Overall, however, there is no reason why we cannot get along. I'm sure we have far more in common than we don't.

Peace.

Because if we were all for/against something, the world would be a very polarised place.

I'm interested in tech, and I have a vested interest in the future. The two combine to make me particularly vocal on the future of technology.

For similar reasons I'm not going to be drawn on the rest of your post. There are a lot worse things happening elsewhere but only so much one person can do. Believe me fazers - if I had the time and energy I would work on changing everything bad into good. What I don't get is why otherwise intelligent people like yourself can't help. Have you given it all up as useless? A future dictated by greedy corporations, our kids nothing better than slaves to fashion/advertising?
