Hi, Im new to these kind of speaker stuff. anyways I recently bought a 5.1 speaker set with a sub woofer. I connected the speakers to the sub woofer and then plugged the sub into my pc using an adapter. when I turn on my sound system, there is no sound coming from the speakers but I can hear a little bit of sound from the subwoofer when im playing music on my pc. Am I missing something?

The model of the sound system is AudioSource Sw380

Solution
The 3 cables are to run from the 3.5mm audio outputs on the back of your pc to the Sony receiver rca inputs.

These carry a line in audio signal, the speakers run from the receivers outputs (which take bare wires)

You'll have 6 inputs into the receiver from the pc, 5 speaker outs running out (twin bared wires) to left/right, rear left/right, centre then the subwoofer cable running out to your subwoofer.
If possible swap audio cables with known working audio cables.

What exactly is that adapter?

Very likely there is a mismatch in the plugs and ports.

TS, TRS, TRRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve).

Start with the following link:

https://www.cablechick.com.au/blog/understanding-trrs-and-audio-jacks/

Match up your plugs and ports.
The adapter im using is this one: https://www.amazon.com/yueton-3-5mm...1&keywords=av+to+3.5mm&qid=1595697463&sr=8-35

The adapter plugs in to the low level input on the back of the sub (which are the white & red AV Connectors) Then the 3.5mm connector goes to the back of my pc.

and the type of tip I have is the TRRS Kind.

Im confused.
From what I see that's simply a speaker set and an active (powered) sub.

You need an amplifier or receiver between the pc and speakers to actually power anything.

If I need a receviver. then what type of connectors should i be looking for on the back of the receiver. Also which one would be cheaper to purchase if I had to get one? Receiver or Amp?

Connectivity then being:

Sub-woofer === RCA plugs (Red & White ) ----TRRS (3.5 mm female) <--- TRRS cable (3.5 male, both ends) -----> 3.5 mm audio port on the back of the PC

Correct?

I am not sure about the adapter's 3.5 female port is TRRS and likewise for the 3.5 mm audio port on the back of the PC. What color coding (if any) is the audio port being used?

your correct about the way its connected to the pc. The audio port on the back of the pc has no color to it.

The yamaha is the only one that really suits.
It has all relevant inputs + a dedicated subwoofer output.

To connect it to pc you will need 3 of these

And one of these

Thank you so much for your help. I just have one more question. how is my subwoofer gonna connect to the reciever? The back of my Subwoofer has a right and left AV audio connector. would I use those connectors on the sub and plug it in to the subwoofer output?

You're right I didn't see it had left and right input, one of these required too.

Make sure the cables I linked to are long enough, the ones I picked are all 6 foot ones.

You may want a longer subwoofer cable??

If so replace the 6foot subwoofer cable with this one.

6ft Should be long enough of a cable.

Also someone else bought the Yamaha Receiver before I could so would any of the other ones in my list or in this new list would also work?

For Some reason most of the ones I found in my budget were Sony branded

Only the first one str-de475 from ebay is relevant, the rest are only stereo receivers.

Shame the yamaha went, was a great price, would argue the Sony is as good and looks better in black though.

Yeah it is a shame the Yamaha went. So when I get a receiver, these are the only 2 adapters I would need correct?

I already have the cable that will connect to the female end on the 2nd adapter.

Yes you need 3 of the first ones though (3.5mm to 2 x rca)

One for fronts, one for rears, and one for centre and subwoofer combined.

But the speakers are connected using stripped wires so couldn't I use the stripped wires and connect it to the speaker clips on the back on the receiver. the subwoofer is what those adapters would be used for.

oh ok, makes sense. So I need 3 of these adapters correct? and then only one RCA Splitter?
