I have a Surfboard SB5120 Cable modem, and a Netgear WNR834b router, and have had nothing but problems trying to get BitTorrent and port forwarding to run well. Sometimes downloads work great and I get good speeds, and sometimes but less often uploads will run at the proper speed. Sometimes neither will work for a few days and suddenly kick in at poor speed, sometimes at good speed. I don't think it's an issue with who i'm downloading from as I use a private tracker filled with people with good connections (and heavily seeded files). I'm also running behind the ZA free firewall.

I did some digging, and found this post on the portforward.com forums, saying that Surfboard modems can be modified by your ISP to hinder port forwarding. They claim you can tell if you ISP is doing this by checking the IP address your router config gives you under the router status link, and mine doesn't give 192.168.100.xx as my internet ip, but gives my real ip. So i'm not sure if this is the problem.

I use their method of setting up port forwarding for uTorrent, and then run the uTorrent check, and it fails. I have ZA set to give uTorrent full permissions, so that's not the problem.

I'm hazy on the whole static ip issue and what that means exactly, but
if my router is assigned a differnent ip every time I connect, it is still giving my computer the same local ip of 192.168.1.2 every time I connect. I set this as my server ip address in the router config port forwarding section. Is that not right? Should I be using my real ip address?

I tried calling my ISP to get them to given me a static address, and they wouldn't. So, what are my options from here? I'm thinking about trying a new cable modem, but I don't want to run into the same problems. Money is not an issue, and I'm having a very very hard time finding any good reviews of cable modems, either on forums or on newegg.com. Any suggestions?

EDIT, I just mucked around in Zone Alarm, and was checking the logs, and it shows a ton of blocked incoming connections from 192.168.1.2:XXXXX (where xxxxx is the port I set up for uTorrent). The protocol listed was UDP. What does this mean?

Will try to answer your questons.

1st. Check your WAN port IP Address.
if this is a private IP, you are in big trouble. You most have a real Public IP address for others to locate you.

For testing purposes disable ZA, and use only the routers FW for now. This will eliminate 1 source of problem.

By your ZA Log it is blocking your inbound traffic. Disabling ZA will prove this.

UDP is a protocol BT is using.

How do I find my WAN port IP address? My Netgear Router status shows three ports, Internet, LAN and Wireless. The internet port shows my ip as my real ip address, the LAN as 192.168.1.1... There is a WAN Setup tab under the Advanced settings tab, but that doesn't show any IP address, just a check box next to "Connect automatically, as required"

I disabled ZA and uTorrent behaved just as it did while it was running. It would start out downloading and uploading at around 3k/s (I'm on a 5MB connection, heh), and slowly peter down to 0k/s, with short spurts of activity after that.

Your internet port should be the WAN side. Any 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.? are private IP's.

You can use a dyndns.org to assign a domain name to your IP address if public. If you have a private IP it's bad news.

from a cmd window run "ipconfig /all" and post results.

Huh, ipconfig just runs and closes super fast. I'm on a borrowed laptop with XP, don't know why it won't stay open. Any ideas?

EDIT, figured it out.

IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1

Guess this means I need a new modem?

So, suggestions? 🙁
