Hey,

I'm running the Tyan S2466N-4M Dual Athlon MP board (though currently
with only one processor). Recently, my system started locking up with
blue screens in Windows (varying messages including registry/file
system/irq/driver corruption/etc), or else would just do a hard crash.

When I started experiencing problems with Knoppix, bootable Linux, I
ruled out my main OS or hard disks as problems. I ran memtest and got
errors after a couple test cycles, but I replaced my memory and still
no improvement. The problems have gotten gradually worse over the past
couple weeks in terms of frequency.

As far as I can figure out, it's either the mobo or the CPU...I think
signs point to the mobo (possibly the NorthBridge?), but I don't have
a spare CPU to swap test it and be sure.

Any ideas how I might nail the problem down with certainty as to which
piece of hardware is damaged? Or anybody had similar experiences?

Help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Dave

Did you try cleaning the memory sockets with some contact cleaner? That may
be part of the problem. The contacts oxidize after a while.

A failing PSU will give the symptoms you've described.

Can you now pass a memtest86 test with the new memory? If you still get
errors in memtest86, you have to fix the hardware problem or every OS will
be unreliable. It could be power supply, CPU, memory, motherboard, or power
supply. Also, heat could be an issue.

Hi Dave,

Check the motherboard capacitors around the CPU voltage regulator
modules (VRMs) for signs of swelling or leaking.

My dual Athlon board (MSI K7D-Master) started acting strangely and I
tracked it down to faulty capacitors. A lot of mobos made in 2000-2001
will eventually suffer these problems due to a batch of faulty
capacitors used at the time.

I hope I'm wrong as it means a new mobo and dual athlon boards are
getting a bit scarce now.
