Hey, I am about to buy a PSU tomorrow and was looking in a local store, yet all i see are things that aren't on the list, nor can I find many reviews for them online. Does anyone have opinions or information about the 'Raidmax Cobra' series? Or is the list saying that ALL Raidmax PSU's are trashy?

For reference: 600watt Raidmax Cobra 80+ Gold RX-600AE

You should avoid any Raidmax.

You can't buy online?

^ I agree. Antec is one of the few brands you can recommend by name. The entire lineup is quite good.

The FSP Aurum units are not bad either. The Enermax as well.

I have never tried Raidmax's power supplies but I tried their cases and they were terrible, I dint think you could screw up a case but wow, I would have had better luck using a cardboard box. mind you Raidmax probably shops out to other manufactures and the PSUs an Cases are likely made by different people but the cases show me that Raidmax is NOT concerned with their company's reputation for quality.

Unfortunately local shops are not the best place to get your stuff. its sad, i like brick and mortar shops for a lot of things but when it comes to computer hardware its almost imposible for a physical store to keep up with e-stores. Goliaths like Tigerdirect and Newegg can offer thousands of choices where as computer shops have if you are lucky, maybe two different brands of each of the major components. Usually those choices are governed by the best deal a company Rep can make them. like the shop two doors down from me sells a lot of Zonenet equipment, Which I find funny because he wont touch it for any of his builds or repairs. If you drop your computer off he orders parts online.

Wish I had a better solution. maybe look online to see if there is a shop with a better selection in the next town over from you?

Back in 2005 when I built my first rig totally from scratch from parts I could find at the local Fry's Warehouse. I didn't know much back then about who was who as far as quality and I ended up buying a curiously low priced Raidmax case that came with a 450W PSU. Well the case absoultely sucked and had really sharp edges that cut me while installing the hardware, and the LED on the front panel stopped working after a few days and that was its only feature that made it attractive at all. The PSU shot fireballs out the backside everytime it turned on and eventually died within about six months.

To be fair, I see they now have some ATNG made PSUs which might be ok since ATNG has made some good PSUs for other companies.

somehow I doubt it. considering how low buget they are on everything, I bet ATNG makes the PSUs for Raidmax out of the cheapest leftover scraps possible.

I am glad to see that razor sharp hand cutting goodness was not my treat alone. seems to be a trademark of Raidmax cases.

Where you see that? RealhardtechX shows Andyson and Sun Pro Electronics. Neither inspires confidence.

That's interesting. I usually hold the RealhardtechX site as the most comprehensive list available. It's possible that Raidmax is so low end they didn't bother updating it but there is a new series listed there.

http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page6337.htm

I don't usually even look at the Tom's list unless a unit or brand is not listed in the RealhardtechX database. Just goes to show you there is no one perfect list!

RealhardtechX lists all units including discontinued models.

The Raidmax A and XP/XPW Series were discontinued years ago. The A-Series were being sold somewhere back around 2006 and the XP/XPW Series around 2004.

Some Newegg.com customers reported that the A-Series RAIDMAX VOLCANO RX-630A fried their motherboard when the PSU died.

SilentPCReview.com reviewed a Raidmax RX-520XPW back on November 3, 2004 and found that the PSU would shut down when it reached a power draw of 464.5 Watts because the exhaust temperature reached 65°C. That wasn't even tested in a hotbox either. It was at 20°C room temperature.

They come over the Cooler Master B series PSUs.

why is rosewill fortress series in tier 3 whereas all of them are supposed to be in tier 1 because all of them are 80+ platinum
while other 80+ Platinum series are in tier 1?
example:
Rosewill Fortress 450W 80+ Platinum Certified ATX Power Supply
Rosewill Fortress 550W 80+ Platinum Certified ATX Power Supply
Rosewill Fortress 650W 80+ Platinum Certified ATX Power Supply
Rosewill Fortress 750W 80+ Platinum Certified ATX Power Supply

actually i got that from pcpartpicker! that's why i am asking!

efficiecy doesnt always reflect on built quality! the Fortress family is a tier 3 most probably due to lower quality caps used on the secondary side (Capxon , Teapo)!

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Rosewill/FORTRESS-550W/1.html

only psu with exclusively (japanese) high quality components can be found on a higher tiers!

Edit: with the exception of Enesol caps,i think, as they arent Japanese but they are considered as high quality caps!
