Good to hear from you hotfoot! im still waiting to finish my 3040 project, but im still in 4100/5000. Its too hard to wait if you only have 30s/frame

thanks dude, i think it's a little too big for me to handle, especially with the 4 day final deadline, i'm not guaranteed to connect that often for that long, i'll be sticking to 2 normal folding processes...

btw, does my sig work? i set it up and i can't actually see it because tinyurl is blocked in saudi arabia, i had to anonymize to set it up and don't know if it's still working

Thanks,
Ara

I see your sig just fine. It looks like mine, but with different colours, like a black background.

Good news: My X2 3600+ is now folding for the team. It's a little slower than my PD820 (you read that right). Lol, that's because the 820's working at 3.36 GHz and I haven't overclocked the X2. It seems that while the motherboard I got for it, the ASUS M2A-VM, is great for the HTPC purpose, it doesn't have very good options for overclocking. I might be able to get 10-20% more out of it, in time.

Anyway, I hope that with three dual-core machines running the SMP client I'll be boosting my score up past 2000 ppd. So far, my estimates for ppd - not including down times since I'm tinkering a lot - are:

Smithfield, 3.36GHz: 950
Yonah, 1.66GHz: 550
Brisbane, 1.9GHz: 730

thanks, you know, i didn't know that anyone had that sig done until i anonymized... the worst part about the saudi firewall is that it doesn't even mention that it blocked an image on a website... (it's either the whole website or nothing) and as tinyurl is blocked, i can't even see that there is a sig image, it happens even when someone puts an image into a thread, i can't even tell there is one unless it's from an unblocked site or people start mentioning it...

i honestly can't remember who was in charge, but it was one of the big original folders i think
its Sparky853 who does/did the page. his updates have been sporadic, the last I know of was end of last year. maybe his subscription ran out... endyen seemed to be in contact with him, but I don't see him very often anymore, at least not in this thread...

bah, not my choice... i'm still 17, so i'm kinda stuck with my dad... 1 1/2 more years though and i'm out of here, although, to be honest, it's a nice place if you know how to enjoy yourself. There are many restrictions, but that might be what makes it unique to me, i would probably get bored living in a normal country to be honest... an added bonus is that major crime is low here, haven't been any problems that i've noticed since the compound bombings, and the consulate attacks.

btw, do you guys think it's possible to make another website/webpage for the team, i know i'm not particularly good with web design, perhaps toms can lend us hosting space? it would also make it more normal to have a folding page (not nescessarily a forum) on the server, make life easy and no one would have to pay for it, just put time into it. anyone up to the challenge?

It's hard to deny the love one has for the land where he grew up. I come from a small town in Saskatchewan, and that's a huge part of my identity. But those little towns hold very little promise for a young person trying to build a career. I miss some things about smaller towns, but the internet access was 5 years behind it's time, there are few local stores with decent prices, and there's just generally less to do. Small towns also have a larger proportion of drugs & alcohol problems.

Yet... I grew up without asthma, which I attribute mostly to not living in a smog-ridden city. I miss walking about in my yard (we had 160 acres). You don't just leave a place without thinking very hard about it.

G'day,

For those of you who find the windows SMP client unerliable, I've had better success run the GUI client in conjunction with the console client. As long as the two versions run in different directories and have different work folders, a CPU with two cores or a dual CPU will happily work on two different projects at once.

I've had nothing but trouble with the current Windows SMP client so thought I'd let you know about this trick in case you haven't tried it before.

Cheers
Lyall.

most people ran that method (and i still do) until the SMP client, i personally find it better with 2 console clients (as opposed to 1 console and 1 graphical, not as opposed to SMP) because the folding is absolutely transparent, you cannot tell it's going on except while gaming. this method has been around for a long time btw and the PPD is far less then the SMP client (supposing it runs smoothly)... Far less...

Ok just downloaded the commandline version, set it up so 1 dos window says machine id 1, put a user name pickie and 40051 team id

set another dos window up with machine id 2 and same details

both dos windows seems to be woking on WUs ??

and im at 100% CPU usage :)

?? when does my name appear on the list of team mates for THW ??

also is there a better way to run this software for a core 2 duo CPU ??

cheers
Pickie

Certainly any Core 2 Duo should be capable of running the SMP client. You'll get the most points running it in a 64-bit linux environment (this can be done through VMware, though I'm not familiar with that technique). You can also use the Windows SMP client. A single SMP client will use up to four cores, so you don't need to run multiple instances. The points bonus for running SMP is much greater than running separate, single-threaded clients.

Your name should appear on the lists once you've handed in your first WU. The Folding@Home list at Stanford is updated hourly, and the one at EOC is updated only every three hours. I've found it can take up to 5 hours for a completed WU to find itself on the EOL database.

ok now running the SMP version

?? all went ok with the install.bat

lots of text came up and now its stoped on Extra SSE boost OK ?? is this ment to do this ?? both cores are at 100% load

Everything is probably working well. It can take some time for each frame to complete. On a Core Duo 1.66 GHz here, using the Windows SMP client, some frames are 38 minutes.

This depends on what you call a frame. For example, WU 2604 has 500,000 steps. At every 1% of progress, the work is saved (in addition to saving every X minutes based on your settings) and the status is reported in the console. I would consider every 1% progress to be a frame, but I think the graphical client reports each step as being a frame. My post above is with this view.

So, for 2604 on my desktop machine, it takes me 24 minutes to complete 1% of the WU. Each 1% has 5000 steps, so you would say that it takes my machine 0.288 seconds to go through a step.

It should also be noted that WUs vary widely in size. WU 2604 is one of the largest out there, and in my previous post I was indicating a worst-case scenario for how long it should take to complete 1% of such a large WU. Of course, work will be even slower if the computer is buy with other tasks. Anyway, the point is that one can't say if 37s/frame is normal without knowing either of what you mean by a "frame" or what WU you are talking about.

Is the GPU client supposed to be so "slow"?

While it folds fast it really slows the crap out of video response. I almost feels like i am running without the video drivers when i run it. Is this normal? or is it just a bad driver to use (7.3)

Last off, is there and easy way to make the video card clock to 3d speeds when i start F@h?

Am i missing something? i do not see where to set the regulator output(2 clocks use lower voltage) voltage in Riva Tuner? Without it i am just gonna crash if i OC 🙁

I tried disabling the ATI hotkey thing, but it does not seem to work with the new drivers. ATI needs to make there software detect F@H

HELP!!!! SOS

I'm using an Nvidia card, so I can't say that it works for ATI. However, I can set Rivatuner to just overclock when it recognizes the exe has been launched, don't need to play with voltages. But with the newer Nvidia drivers rivatuner doesn't work properly at all.

Sorry I can't help you, since I've never used the GPU client. However, I do have an idea. It would be great to have a Folding@Home GPU client guide in the distributed computing section of these forums so people with questions like yours would have a solid place to start.

Hi Nukemaster,

You can setup profiles in the Control center so that when you click the system tray or double click on a shortcut the GPU is overclocked you can then setup a different profile to set the GPU clock back to normal.

If this isn't good enough, try sending an email to ATI's customer care. You'll need the product number of your graphics card that should be on the box the card came with. You can reach them at:
http://www.ati.com/online/cccwelcome/custcare.html

Sorry, but I don't have the product number of my card so I won't be able to do this for you.

Also, by the sounds of things, you would actually get better point per day by using your C2D E6600 CPU with the Windows SMP client rather than your ATI X1900XT GPU . Anyone else got an oppinon on this?

Cheers
Lyall

The best points per day is with the 64bit Linux SMP client. I like using it on Ubuntu Linux through VMware server. I can run Windows normally, and run 64bit Ubuntu AT THE SAME TIME.
