Troubles with new cpu

Hey all, new to the forums here.

To get to the point - trying to upgrade an old pc..having trouble getting new cpu to work

I have SR2038X Compac Presario

Windows XP 32 bit

Mobo = A8M2N-LA

Current CPU is AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Upgrading to AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+

With new CPU..I get no boot or POST and beep code of 1 short and 1 long

According to this, the beep code is referencing a memory problem

I have 2G RAM (4x DDR2 512)

Everything works fine with the 3800+ CPU

I have recently installed a GPU compatible with my PSU (300W)

What Ive Tried: Removing, rearranging RAM sticks
Removing GPU

I simply cannot get the 4800+ CPU to work!

It is possible that you got a bad CPU, the memory controller is on the CPU so that might be why you have ram beep codes.

Thanks for the quick response..I want to be sure of a bad CPU before I send it back

Is it an used CPU? Did you check for bent or missing pins?

Your m'board should take this cpu. Re-check to make sure the cpu is properly installed into slot and that all other steps taken to remove old cpu has been fully reversed. Check memory modules are properly seated and anything else that might have been bumped/knocked in the process. It is very commonly the simplest overlooked thing - we've all been there, more than once

Once you've re-checked everything and if it still dosen't boot, send it back for a replacement.

Before sending it back, also check that you have the latest BIO installed in your system. Many times manuf. add support for faster cpus later in the products life.

From what I know I have 3.10 BIOS which, according to this, is the latest

the CPU drops right in and fits like a charm without any force or hassle..it DOES however have what looks to be a SLIGHTLY bent pin

Slightly bent pin that goes into the socket would not matter.

Sent it back. The new CPU works like a charm..problem solved.

With OEM motherboards like HP/Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc., you often get stuck with the launch CPU support list since they are often not intended for aftermarket CPU upgrades.
