Hey folks,

Somehow, in the process of installing a new hard disk as a slave, a file
got changed and now when I boot up, it ask which OS to load, and lists XP
Professional 2 times. I couldn't get to boot at all for a little bit cause
that screen would flash by so fast. Normally if I missed the option, it
would come up that I was missing a couple of files and would keep rebooting.
What I had to do is wait at just the right moment and hit the down arrow and
enter very quickly to get this OS to load properly.

In a nutshell, somehow this thing wants to dual boot and see's another OS
for some reason which there is none, and its giving me a headache. What
file do I need to change so that it only shows this OS to boot from??

TIA,

Doug

Hi Doug,

Click start/run, type MSCONFIG and click ok. Go to the boot.ini tab, click
on the second entry under the [operating systems] (this is the one that
works), then on "set as default". Click apply, then click "check all boot
paths", it should offer to remove the invalid entry.

Hi Peter,

Yes, that was a clue that the default was the bad one. The OP would get in
when he/she was able to choose the second boot.ini load entry. Can't say I'm
not guilty of skimming through posts at times looking for key words, but
this is a good example why some should be read entirely.

Hi, Rick.

We might also remind the OP that he can go to System Properties | Advanced |
Startup and Recovery Settings and use the System startup section to set the
default and delay time, or Edit boot.ini to make any changes he needs. The
Edit button here was not in Win2K and many WinXP users haven't spotted it
yet.

Hi RC,

Yes, but I find using msconfig safer for these types of operations, as the
user can't mess it up too much. I try to avoid recommending manual editing
unless there is no other method.
