Unexpected Shutdown

Hey,

Recently whenever I have been running any games my GPU gets to around 80C and then i get a black screen. After the screen goes black the sound continues for a moment before jumping and the pc shuts down. It then attempts to reboot but the gpu does not reboot properly and I have to manually turn it off and back on the get picture back.

The first couple times this happened a fan in the case went at 100% until I reset the computer using the power button.
I believe this is the GPU overheating which is causing these crashes but 80C doesn't seem that high a temperature.
Any ideas on the cause of this will be appreciated,

Forgot to mention the Graphics card is an EVGA 660GTX SC with the latest nvidia drivers. This problem did also happen on the last set of drivers though.

Some other additional information:
I have since got another case fan in the hopes that improving airflow would solve the issue. However still when the temperature reaches 85C the GPU shuts down and the same black screen happens. I'm thinking this must be a fault with the card itself.

Okay something even weirder that really confuses me. I've been running FurMark and Prime95 side by side for the last 10 minutes on stock fan settings. During to course of running these my cpu temp rose to 63C and my gpu temp rose to 89-90C but no shutdowns or anything. If this had been overheating related wouldn't a temp of 90 caused it to shutdown? And if it isn't shutting down due to overheating then why is it?

This is not overheating related, your GPU is simply not getting enough power. Either your PSU is not adequate or your PCI-E power cables are not connected properly. I would see to the latter first. Also check that it is properly seated in the PCI-E slot, the screws are holding it in place, and the lever is locked.

The graphics card says that it requires 24A from the power supply and mine is capable of providing 53A so that shouldn't be the problem. Also when I was installing the new case fans I made sure that the card was properly seated and that the power cable was properly in.

Well check again. I've had the very same issue when gaming you described; Screen goes black, temps were fine, fans ramp up to 100% and the problem was just barely disconnected PCI-E power plug (which I didn't even recall touching during maintenance).

It's also possible that the card has faulty power intake, or that there's something wrong with the cables you're using. But that's where I would start...

Okay I've taken the side panel off and tried with two PCI-E power cables and made sure each was securely connected and the problem still happens. Screen goes blank, fans go to 100%, and computer wont respond until I restart it.

I've looked out an old graphics card that was lying around and have tried using that to see if the problem would be gone. It seems like there isn't the same problem where the fans ramp up to 100% and the system shuts down however there is another problem.

When I restart my computer either through windows or in BIOS all of the fans spin up but I only get a blank screen. Windows loads up properly as I can hear the chime but still nothing on the screen. I'm starting to suspect that this is power supply related after all. What would be the best way to check the power supply?
