uninstalling xp pro

good morning! im having trouble trying to fix my computer after a virus
attack, for the 2nd time, and yes i do have virus protection installed. i
want to UNinstall xp pro, and go back to my windows 98 os. do i need to
uninstall all software installed, and unhook cable modem and router before i
do this so not to damaged them. im not happy with xp, and want to change my
system back. thanks for your help.

2. Create a new partition.
3. Format the new partition FAT32.

Hi,

Yes, disconnect from the internet first. Then how you proceed depends on
whether this was an upgrade to begin with, and whether the uninstall option
is still available. Check for it in the Control panel/Add & Remove and use
it if available. If not, you will need to boot with a 9x startup floppy and
format the system partition, then run setup for Win98.

Going back to W98 will solve nothing at all because your system will still
be vulnerable, even more so.. You said that you have virus protection
installed. Have you also been updating and running it frequently? Do you
have an anti-spyware program? If not, get one and keep it updated and run it
frequently as well.

Some very reliable protective software are out there on the internet, and
many of them are free downloads. Examples of free ones include AVG 7.0, an
AV program from Grisoft, and AdAware, an anti-spyware program.

Turn off System Restore, download, install, update and scan with Ad-aware SE
Personal. http://www.lavasoftusa.com Free!
Download, install and scan with Stinger from McAfee (also free)
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Restart the computer and turn on System Restore.

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

Only if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup
the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, can
you then boot into Safe Mode and click Start > Control Panel
> Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions must be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

The OP's question was answered before I responded in the thread. My
question about a firewall was meant to be in the context of Papa's post. I
assumed if the OP reads the entire thread he'll see and understand that.

I see no need for your rudeness or insults. I've never treated you that way
nor anyone else in any of these groups.

There are no rules on this server or in these groups that require users to
bottom post. If you don't like it you can simply add me to your block
senders list or whatever passes for such in whatever reader you happen to be
using. Given your low opinion of me I would have assumed you would have

I'll just reiterate, the OP's question was answered so there was no need for
me to be redundant. I simply added additional information in support of

Simple - format the drive, install W98 & good luck - until the W98 support
is dropped from the MS support (which has been extended for a short period),
as it's well & truly redundant!!

XP, (if anyone with any sense has the motivation to read & follow the basic
provisos first) IS the best OS MS has produced; user-friendly & forgiving,
except for the ones that can't be bothered to read MS's advice before
installing it, then later complain purely because of their own laziness.
Homework first!!!
