I seem to be having very unstable GPU usage when playing any games. The GPU usage would be at 90-100%, then after a second or two, the usage goes back down to 0%. The temperatures seem to be fine as they are at a stable 60-70. So I think this is why I end up playing at around 120 fps on Valorant even when I have a 144hz monitor. Does anyone know why this might be the case?

GPU: MSI Radeon RX 580 8GB Armor
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 3600 MHz DDR4 16GB (8GBx2)
PSU:Corsair CP-9020122-NA CX Series 650 Watt

In order to render a frame, a GPU requires a pre-rendered frame from the CPU before it can render the frame the rest of the way and send it to your monitor. When your CPU is unable to send pre-rendered frames to your GPU fast enough, it prevents your GPU from performing at its best and being utilized all the way.

Your CPU isn't powerful enough to run valorant at 144 fps consistently. Reducing graphical settings and resolution reduces load on the GPU, not the CPU, so doing either of those won't help. The only way to improve your frame rate is with a CPU upgrade.

Ideally, you should upgrade your CPU to a Ryzen 5600x. This CPU was specifically redesigned enable better high-refresh rate gaming. However, upgrading to a Ryzen 3600 will still be an improvement, although not as good as a Ryzen 5600x will provide.
