And the 4870 has 480 shaders. Which is right? Which makes the most sense? A card that gets 10% more? or a card that gets 25% more? They already have a competitor for the G260whateveritscalledtoday edition, so.....

How does a listing for a RV790 on a compliance database dictate that the GTX 285 is beaten?

As far as your first link goes, its just more of the same thats already been posted.

The update changes a few things on the first link, as they said it isnt just a speed bump. 200Mhz on the core, plus tweaks, its putting in the 285 range, and again, is confirmed by another site.
No details yet, but at 950 core, plus a few tweaks, itll certainly be close to, if not exceed the 285. Ill add I said may, but again Ill add, why would they do this if it didnt? Answer that first. Its the only thing that makes sense, is for them to have top card, otherwise, whats the point?

Its not necessarily and always about having the top card. ATI has nothing that can at least come close to competing with the GTX 285...on the single card arena. While the 4870X2 is a king, it still suffers from bad drivers and well known crossfire shenanigans. ATI knows this, and consumers in that market know this. For people that want extreme enthusiast level performance without Crossfire or SLi, Nvidia is their only option, ATI wants to throw their name in that hat with this 4890, rekindle those X1900XTX days. I just dont expect it to beat the GTX 285.

At least thats my take on it.

We're a couple of days or weeks away from the preview benchmarks, lets just wait and see. And judging from the sapphire listing it looks like its 850 mhz and not a 200 mhz bump.

850 core and 975 memory is pretty poor. My old 512mb 4870 overclocks to 820/970 without a voltage change already - I just checked it on AMD Overdrive.

I just find it very hard to believe that the best ATI can do in a year with the r700 is 100mhz on the core running at a higher voltage.

Lets make this clear, its a revision card that has been used for both the 4850s and 4870s. Honestly how much more can you expect from this card?

I would say they did a decent job for a revision, look at the other Nvidia revisions which were mainly die shrinks and thats about it. Only 1 that was a decent upgrade was the 285 GTX which changed 8 pin to 6 pin and also consisted of a hefty overclock. If that much of an overclock at 648 mhz brought 10% increase, think about what the card was topped off at 750 mhz what it can bring to the table:)

So don't think that the 4890 is a revolutionary card, its just a temp until the next gen.

900 core would be much better, I was hoping at least that. Its still not final though, these might be wrong and totaly misleading numbers. But I will be disapointed at anything below 900 core and 1000(4000) memory.

we still dont know if they made any structural changes to the core (like more shaders or texture units or ROPs).

if these numbers are true then its about 12-13% clock increase with mild 8% memory increase. That should give about 10% faster than 4870 1GB. Which is right under GTX280. If Ati is going to sell that for $300 they will lose.

Lets hope these are not real numbers or they change before launch

I am disappointed at the 850 mhz core because faster memory doesn't really help so much. I was expecting a 900 - 950 core and factory oced edition 1 GB close to 1 ghz :D

We'll see if i buy a factory oced his ice-q4++ maybe squeeze a 1000 out of it :D

well, if the clock increases are that low and its not exactly the same card as the 4870, you can probably get an extra 70/150 overclocking it... :)

however, if its exactly the same as an OC 4870 it wont be able to overclock and we could see artifacts at stock clocks :S

i just hope at least the price is right...
