Question Upgrade - GPU vs CPU, ram and motherboard.

I've started getting back in to FPS again, but my hardware is kinda old and it shows. I'm playing fnite and the first descendant. Fnite is ok fps wise, but descendant is straining my system with between 20-40 fps.

I'm running a 4790k on a z97 motherboard with 16gb 1333Mhz ram and a 1050ti gpu.

With a budget of around 3000dk (400 euros or 438 US) what would be best to upgrade for fps improvement? Gpu or cpu, ram and motherboard?

IMO you might as well wait and save up more money.

What games are you trying to play?

Monitor resolution and refresh rate?

At the moment I'm playing fnite and the first descendant. Fnite runs ok at 70fps average. Descendant however is between 20-40 fps at lowest settings.
Monitor is a 120hz benq. Just want to run in 1920x1080.

Honestly whole system needs a make over you can still make it budget friendly also what is your power supply storage etc

Yeah, i know the system is ancient ^^ and the plan is to upgrade more over time.

Got a 750watt psu, so no issues there. Plenty of room to put more power hungry components in. Main storage is a samsung 500gb ssd, so that's ok too. Then i have several older hdd for stuff that don't need fast transfer speeds, like movies, music and retro games.

What I'm interested in knowing is what would improve gaming the most, if i only upgrade either gpu or cpu, ram and motherboard. If i upgrade gpu, then cpu, ram and motherboard will be upgraded later on and vice versa.

With a system this old, I'm having trouble finding conclusive answers by google search or youtube videos.

Make/model of said power supply? Your biggest issue is that GPU.

Very much game dependent. Online multiplayer usually leans towards CPU though. You can always run at competitive settings and put as little stress on the GPU as possible.

GPU is the obvious weak point.
With RTX 4060 ti / RX 7700 XT you could get 4x to 5x fps improvement.

I would like to go for a 4060 series, but even the extra cost over a 3060 will be an issue if i want it now without waiting at least 3 or 4 months and maybe longer.

I've never really been an AMD user. So no idea what their nvdia equivalents are. Could you enlighten me please? 😁 have no problem choosing amd over nvidia if i can save a few bucks and get same or better performance as their nvidia counterparts.

The 9 game rasterization tests are the most relevant when not using Nvidia preferred features like ray tracing. Basically beating out the RTX 3060 for pure FPS output and kind of tying with the 3060 when it is included.

RTX 4060 is a little bit faster, but is quite a bit more expensive.

As mentioned, the weakest link in your PC is the graphics card. The 4790k is still capable of 1080p gaming. I've used a fourth-gen Intel Xeon E3-1225 V3 for several years, and it could handle a lot for its age, maybe even Cyberpunk if I had a more powerful GPU at the time.

That's also the impression I'm getting. And i could always try to overclock the cpu a bit. My cooler should have no problem keeping temps in check with a minor overclock. Got a mugen scythe on it and it's a an absolute beast 😁 think I'll look into the performance of a 3060 OC and the amd equivalent (whatever that would be) and where i can get the most bang for my buck ^^
