Last night I was working on my Tailor Bod Vendors - I was reorganizing all
of my bods into a neater nicer easier to buy packages - what fun. Around
9:00pm or so there was a message that the shards was coming down. so I put
all my bods away, got on my beetle and logged out. This morning I log on
real quick -had a bad feeling - and my beetle, bod books, and ALL my tailor
bods that I was working on are now gone. I lost about 400 cloth bods, and
around 200 leather bods - now ive got to start all over again.
Is there any way that I can get them back from UO? Do they have a way to
figure out what I had - all the bods were in books, and I had put them in a
secure chest in my house. The chest is still there but not the bods.

TIA
Paul

It's too late when you get that message. They were reverting out an
exploit they had found so the backup could be any time in the past.

No, EA will not reimburse you for lost items. No, screaming and
cursing at us won't help. Sorry for your loss.

Even though they did the announcement I guess the problem was significant
enough that they thought it warranted a 2 hour revert. We used to get
these all the time but it's much, much better now. What happens is the
shards dump their memory - the world state - to be saved at intervals.
When they do a revert, they reload one of those memory dumps. The problem
is that the players aren't reloaded. If your pet is restored to existence
and you're not logged in what happens? It goes wild and eventually
vanishes. So I guess there will be a lot of mad tamers and miners out
there today.

Where were your bods - in the beetle's pack? You didn't store them
somewhere previously and now they're back there? I know when I logged in
I was momentarily confused since it has been so long since I'd seen a
revert. I had to go get a bunch of treasure maps and resort them all
again. Also I thought a ship model had vanished but it was actually still
in a bank box where it started.

Well, i was hoping that i could get my goodies back - in a way (if i look at
the positive side) i met two new people in getting another beetle. I'll
never replace the bods, oh well *heavy sigh*, but i should look at the
longterm possibilities.

Is there a way, a place to look to see when UO is going to do a revert or
backup or whatever so that i wont be caught unprepared again? I thought they
had that info on the shard maintenance page, but it is not there.

Thanks
Paul

Well, the shards normally go down for 15-20 minutes around 5AM server
local time for daily maintenance and the revert is ~15 minutes (used
to be 2-3 hours) but on an emergency revert they can drop *instantly*,
w/o warning. Backups run every 15-30 minutes (they stagger them
randomly to prevent a certain dupe exploit) but they may not revert to
the last backup; if there's a database error or an ongoing exploit
they may have to roll back to the last good backup before that which
could be several hours or even days in the past. I think the record
revert was 5 days but I could be wrong on the low side. They usually
don't know which backup they'll use until they actually try it.

Lo, these many moons ago I GM 'd Swords 4 times in one night with the
same character at the City of the Dead, pre-facet split when
everything was all Felucca. I logged in more times on the wrong side
of that stupid bridge with 0.2 points to go...

It's just one of those things that happens sometimes. There's never a
warning for an emergency down like that.

Man I know that hurts. We've all been there in one fashion or another.

Nah, they hardly even update that page and it's almost always after the
fact. They were supposed to change the server message thingy so that once
you got the message you had a chance to get to safety and log out or
whatever. It used to be that you'd get a message basically saying that
they had already done the last server save and anything else you did would
be lost (reverted) and it was entirely after the fact. Very annoying to
see THAT message when you were off your pet or whatever.

Like I said the new message is SUPPOSED to warn us in advance but it
didn't the other day. I usually log out at 3:30AM so I don't know if it
works correctly for the nightly server maintenance periods.

Which is beyond reality anywhere other then at OSI. OSI screws up 99% of
the people that are in the game because <1% of the PvP population is
using a bug. They just don't get it: Ban the jerks exploiting the bug
instead of crippling the game for everyone else.

I doubt if it even is 1% of the population in factions. I just lost my
bonded horse on Napa because I couldn't find a single faction fighter to
res it.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay low. Test Sosaria reverted nearly 5 *weeks* back
around the first of the year.

Oh jeez, that would be about what I'd expect. I really don't know why
they didn't just open up a pure faction server or two instead of trying to
keep that all going along with the other rule sets.

They don't actually put it on the new, improved HTML intro page when they've
actually patched the game. Mine still claims that sept 1st was the last
patch, when I'm sure there have been at least 2 since then...
Unfortunately, reverts which are not caused by something like a new publish
falling over or a housing rush, are impossible to predict.

Sorry you've suffered, the bods treadmill is hard enough without this!

No. That whole garlic thing is a myth.
