Question Wait for Ryzen 3900X or Just get a 3800X?

I am planning a new build... And for quite sometime I held off getting to a 9900k and wait for Ryzen... And now that its here I decided to go with it. So here's what I am doing with it. I plan on gaming, streaming, and maybe some video editing and basic multitasking things like web browsing. Should I stick with my plan and get the 3900X or is the 3800X good enough. Also I plan on pairing this with a 2080/2080 super for 1440p And putting this in an NZXT S340 elite

Thoughts?

Yea you can wait for Ryzen 9 3950X 16 Cores/32 Threads processors (if you want more cores) which suppose release some point this month.🆒which should be around $750 USD.

Honestly I can't really answer that. It seriously depends on your video editing and how much stuff you run simultaneously. So it requires more in-depth knowledge about what you do exactly for me to give an answer.

I would say this, if your workload is pretty light and for example, you don't care about how long it takes for a video to render. The 3800X will be fine.

Especially since you said light video editing, and your streaming should be done on the Turing NVENC controller not thru x264. So a 3800X in this case would serve you correctly.

However if you plan to go a lot more crazy with multitasking and video editing, I would say wait for the 3950X actually, it is launching very soon.

Yeah I am somewhat a novice to video editing maybe some light editing at the most. Aside from that just want to do some top tier 1440p-4k gaming

A 3900x or 3950x might be overkill for you, there's no difference in gaming between 3800x and 3900x & if you're just doing light editing there's no point getting a 3900x unless you just want to be flashy and have the best processor you can get which I understand too. I would actually recommend the 3700x, a 3800x isn't really worth the $70 markup, it's just clocked slightly higher than the 3700x which you can just do yourself easily and save 70 bucks.

Although 3800x's might be better binned chips meaning they're able to hit higher stable overclocks, just a theory.

How's the performance of a 3700x vs 9900K as far as gaming is concerned. I have committed yet out of the 2080 or the 2080ti. but I like to game either 1440p or 4k.

A 9900k is about the same performance when it comes to gaming as the 9700k, in most cases a 3700x is about 5% slower in gaming performance than a 9900k, some titles are even, some titles the 9900k pulls the lead to more like 10% but you can expect the majority to be about a 5% difference.

I have a 2080 & 2080 ti, the 2080 super is out too now which is slightly better than a 2080 for basically the same price. The 2080 ti still pulls ahead of the super by a solid 20% in 4k gaming so if you can fit an extra $4-500 without much worry it's worth it, otherwise a 2080 super is still pretty good for 4k, but dont expect every game to have over 60fps though. (thats with rtx off)

If you want my opinion go for a 2080 super with a 1440p monitor, you really wont notice a huge difference from 1440p and 4k as long as you dont cheap out on the monitor and you can enjoy higher frames/smoother gameplay.

I would even go as far to say the ryzen 5 3600 is enough. Since video editing appears to be a low priority I would just get a 3600 and stream with the Nvidia GPU. And for 1440p even the RTX 2060 is enough unless you want high refresh. If you want 4k you really want to get the best GPU you can afford. The RTX 2080 is fine for 4k medium or high but for Ultra the RTX 2080 ti is hardly even enough. I'm talking about for newer and upcoming games. Personally I would save my money and wait until 4k is more doable on more mid-range graphics cards. 1440p with some sharpening and AA looks great anyway.

Looking at currently available benchmarks between the 3800X and 3900X. ... Looking at the results in many games such as Black OPS III and Civ VI, the 3800X and 3900X perform identically in FPS, but in some games such as GTA V, Overwatch and CS:GO, the Ryzen 9 3900X far outperforms the Ryzen 7 3800X for gaming

Like TechInAZ said it really depends on how much stuff you are using at the same time like if you have your video editor running and an audio editor and youtube then the 3900X would be a good help, but if you are only casually editing videos the 3800X will be more then enough. I am also a video editor and I find my 4 Core 8 Thread just fine but realistically I need at least a 6 core for editing more videos simultaneously.
