Wow... definitely not as impressive as was expected... I expected ATI to be cutting their prices to make the price>performance ratio larger, but now that these are released, it doesn't seem it'll be necessary for them... And I wanted a cheaper ATI card too 🙁 (p.s: wanted to post this on the toms review of the fermi cards, but it disapeared while I was logging on?)

Is it me or fermi does "well" only on the nvidia`s hyped games ? with their "optimisations" ? btw the 470 sucks hard against the 5850 from what i see.

All the hype for nothing. Shame on all those posters who posted fake GTX480 benchies! We knew those numbers weren't real!

Wow... GTX480 uses more power too?? ouch.

Well My CF 5850's are sitting pretty 🙂

[citation][nom]pei-chen[/nom]Wow, it seems Nvidia actually went ahead and designed a DX11 card and found out how difficult it is to design. ATI/AMD just slapped a DX11 sticker on their DX10 card and sells it as DX11.[/citation]
Yea, that's why DX11 games run in DX11 mode on ATI cards, cause of the sticker... Do you think that those stickers on cars make them go faster too?

[citation][nom]djtronika[/nom]maybe intel and ati should have married instead. love their combo performance.[/citation]

Intel and AMD together? Well 2012 is just around the corner, so hell, do it! =P

[citation][nom]pei-chen[/nom]480 is 15% more expensive than 5870 and about 15% faster. Not bad. Previous rumor has it 50% more expensive and only 5% faster.[/citation]
did you saw the part where 2 radeon 5870 in cross fire consumes less power than 1 geforce 470 ? or that the 480 eats up about 500 W alone ? i still belive the radeons are cheaper on the long run.

I read some reviews. This is bad. Fermi sucks! It's terrible! Because then we won't see a price drop for the 5800 series!
I wanted a 5850 toxic 🙁

Wow! A canned response from AMD... A really good news story this is... lol

"Four months after its launch, the ATI Radeon HD 5970 remains the undisputed performance leader."

Interesting that when the 5870 came out, they poo poo'd any comparisons to the 295 GTX because it was inappropriate to compare a single GPU card w/ a dual GPU card....

When the 295 came out, they poo poo'd the significance of power consumption and temps when comparing it to the 4870x2....

And at the 5xxx series launch.....was lotta talk how ATI would improve w/ driver improvements as 5xx was just outta the gate....

....To BOTH ATI and nVidia ..... if you're gonna rant, at least be consistent....not suggesting this behavior unique to ATI just pointing it out this way cause today it's ATI's turn at the spin mill....last week is was Nvidia doing it....let the numbers speak for themselves.

[citation][nom]Blessedman[/nom]wait the reviews that I have read are very impressed with fermi... what is everyone else reading? Fermi tops the charts in 99% of the benchmarks that I saw for a single GPU card. Maybe I am not seeing the full picture, lol[/citation]
No you are right it is just Toms is full of ATI, Crapbox 360 fanboys. Don't let these kids get on your nerves, not worth it.

If I was to select a new card (currently have a GTX 285) for DX 11 right now I would have to see Tom's comparison chart and factor in price and power requirements too. If the ATI card was not quite as fast but used allot less juice and slightly cheaper. I would probably pick the ATI so as not to stress my power supply.
The one point here is no single GPU/chip and most dual chip cards can touch the new GTX 480 Nvidia single chip solution. Yes it is a power eating monster but it rocks. Later when they shrink the die it will be the card of choice.

Welcome to the land of negative thumbs. How dare you make a reasonable point on Tom's comments section. Let this be a lesson to all of you.

Why Tom's doesn't get off their collective butts and do a karma system with limited mod points, is beyond me. You'd think the go-to guys for computing news would be advanced enough for such a task.

These days, high level GPUs can run pretty much any game at high resolutions, who cares about the difference between 60 and 65 FPS?

This is where the cost, and other factors like heat, power consumption etc. come in to play.

People are unimpressed because it only outperforms the 5870 marginally in many games, yet costs a lot more, consumes a lot more power, runs hotter, and has been released 6 months after it.

We aren't saying this isn't the fastest single GPU card, we are just saying it doesnt make sense vs. a 5870 or a 5970.

or even a 5850 CF.

i just love AMD's response :) Very true. Nvidia made a big mistake by giving AMD 6 months to flood the market with an entire range of brilliant cards at excellent prices.

[citation][nom]Dave Erskine[/nom] Four months after its launch, the ATI Radeon HD 5970 remains the undisputed performance leader. Six months after its launch, the ATI Radeon HD 5870 remains the clear winner at and below its price point. Add to that a top to bottom line-up of DirectX 11 graphics cards as well as cutting-edge features such as the immersive experience of ATI Eyefinity technology, and we are confident ATI Radeon graphics cards will continue to be the favorite choice of customers wanting the most advanced and efficient graphics products.

-Dave Erskine, AMD spokesperson[/citation]

Wouldn't expect him to say anything different.

After seeing the reviews of fermi... All I can say is WTF WERE YOU GUYS DOING FOR 6 MONTHS?! Seriously, I thought that after the days of the 8000 series, ATI would never be able to make a comeback. I was soooo wrong. lol

I rest my case:
"We see no reason to purchase a GeForce GTX 470. It provides no gameplay advantages compared to the competition, and will actually end up costing you more power and dollars for the exact same performance you can get with the Radeon HD 5850. Factor in the power consumption, and it doesn’t seem worth it. If you have an HD 5850, stick with it, the GTX 470 is not an upgrade. If you are contemplating a great performing graphics card, for a decent price, the HD 5850 is still the best choice.
The GeForce GTX 480 is more relevant in the market but it hasn’t exactly come out of the gate wowing us with performance either. There are some games where it is faster than the Radeon HD 5870, and there are some games where it is even with the Radeon HD 5870. Factor in the cost and power, and include the ability to run Eyefinity on a single GPU, the Radeon HD 5870, to us, seems like the better value for the gamer right now."
