[citation][nom]dominatorix[/nom]http://www.hardocp.com/article/201 [...] i_review/8I rest my case:"We see no reason to purchase a GeForce GTX 470. It provides no gameplay advantages compared to the competition, and will actually end up costing you more power and dollars for the exact same performance you can get with the Radeon HD 5850. Factor in the power consumption, and it doesn’t seem worth it. If you have an HD 5850, stick with it, the GTX 470 is not an upgrade. If you are contemplating a great performing graphics card, for a decent price, the HD 5850 is still the best choice. The GeForce GTX 480 is more relevant in the market but it hasn’t exactly come out of the gate wowing us with performance either. There are some games where it is faster than the Radeon HD 5870, and there are some games where it is even with the Radeon HD 5870. Factor in the cost and power, and include the ability to run Eyefinity on a single GPU, the Radeon HD 5870, to us, seems like the better value for the gamer right now."[/citation]

Exactly. I read the one from Guru of 3D because they were among the first to post online, and couldn't stop laughing. They look like they were paid to write good things about Nvidia. They just hint at some minor disadvantages. Expressions like "somewhat high power draw for the GTX 480" and "we feel the GTX 480 is priced a notch too high though" are as far as they go, and they don't even put the Radeons' TDP data in there for comparison.

And the praising is just hilarious: "NVIDIA regains the performance crown and is back in the saddle like a cowboy after a harsh shootout, riding its horse into the sunset."

Really, I didn't make the above sentence up. They actually wrote that.

Have to congratulate Tom's for being objective here.

They definitely overestimated GF100. They outdid themselves with cypress's perfomance/power and were planning a refresh of 5k when Nvidia released fermi. I guess that wont be necessary any more.

I like how he threw in "EFFICIENT"! Something nVidia seems to have missed. I think of the new nVidia cards as crude power. THey just give em a butt load of juice and they crank out maybe 10-15% more pixel power than the Radeon's that use MUCH less power at load. THe GTX480 is like a GM made V8 from 1990, who gives a f*** how much gas it uses the thing could move a damn tree! Where as ATI seems a bit more conscious of power needs of consumers, they're like the fine tuned euro-made (or Ford) V6. THey pack a punch.. and they're fuel conscious.

This really sucks. Competition is what gave us the great deals the last few years. There's no reason for any deals now. ATI is the clear winner. Guess my GTX 260 will see a bit more use and hope for better next year or so.

"No you are right it is just Toms is full of ATI, Crapbox 360 fanboys. Don't let these kids get on your nerves, not worth it."

Look like a fanboi got his dreams crushed. Get a tissue and get out.

Don't blame us, because nvidia failed. These should've came out when the 5k series did, or just a month or so later. And people probably would've been good with it. But 6 more months of hype, and they don't bring something out that knocks out ati come on.

And I'm not a fanboi of any company. I will buy what suits me best, and for what I want to do. Which is why I personally can't wait till I get back from deployment in a years time to see what nvidia, and ati have out then.

The fact that you guys keep mentioning how unimpressive Fermi is, the more it is unnecessary for ATI to drop prices. So don't expect price drops after the release of Fermi. The more there are Fermi haters, the more ATI will keep high prices.

First I would like to say I am unimpressed by Fermi slightly. Heat and power arent a big deal for me to be honest, but I expected a little more performance. I do have faith that the 512sp card will be equal to a 5970 or only slightly worse. I will admit that I will be skipping this generation of graphic cards. First no games need the power of any of these cards that are actually good games. My OC 4890 performs better then a stock 5850 and the gtx 480 is too expensive and the 5870 doesn't give a big enough performance boost for the price, same with the gtx 470. Hopefully by next gen nvidia will hone it's new architecture and ATI will try something new and the software catches up.

The GTX480 is slightly (10% avg) faster than the ATI5870. However considering it has a 60% larger die, consumes 70+ more watts of power and produces a lot more heat, the 480 clearly loses on design and power inefficiency and price. The ATI 5870 is still a better value.

[citation][nom]Lmeow[/nom]I'm kinda disappointed... but just hope that nVidia's drivers improve them over time.Too bad the power consumption and temperatures won't - you can nearly boil water with the GTX 470 and 480. Although for folding, I'm pretty sure they'd be awesome.Had a laugh at this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpZXhR1ibj8[/citation]

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...I just poo'd a little.

[citation][nom]nebun[/nom]ok morons, fermi is once gpu card while the top of the line ATI is a dual GPU card. put fermi in sli and give it time for drivers to mature then you can talk. go nvidia, lol[/citation]
NVidia has the best card (if you don't mind running a nuclear power plant in your house and an industrial strength air conditioning unit) so you are right.

But it's also going to be 100-150 dollars more expensive when all is said and done. ~$125 for ~10%... most gamers are not going to bite.

This is bad for NVidia. Very bad.

[citation][nom]JackNaylorPE[/nom]"Four months after its launch, the ATI Radeon HD 5970 remains the undisputed performance leader."Interesting that when the 5870 came out, they poo poo'd any comparisons to the 295 GTX because it was inappropriate to compare a single GPU card w/ a dual GPU card.... [/citation]
Are you forgetting one "unimportant" detail here, my friend? Namely POWER CONSUMPTION? It was expected that ATI-s cards would come in "dual" versions. Do you seriously expect dual 480-s? Oh and that in SLI mode?

LOL, i won't . Do you want to see 600 watts on full load consumption? NUTS, this is indeed very very very bad for nvidia :O

Damn that was short and and to the point. All I read was "nvidia- suck it".

i think with this power consumption which shows nvidias cards , amd now have space to release 5870x3 or to improve their 5970 - they cuted 5970 performance to keep less power consumption but now the competitor's top gpu consume much more power so amd can allow themselves to release a really monster gpu soon. They really handle good with the power problems.

As far as gamers are concerned, Fermi=FAIL. It IS that simple; it offers nothing that isn't available elsewhere for less.
I'll reserve judgment on professional use; anything that can use Fermi's GPGPU / CUDA capabilities. While I suspect it isn't viable in server farms because of the power and heat, it may yet have a place in single workstations.
For myself, since I don't have any current FPS titles, I still can't justify an upgrade from a HD4850, even at 1920x1080. Hopefully a good game will come along soon that does.
