it's the good old kdramastars spreading the same information over and over again about it's launch in 2015..

Hi, this has probably been asked numerous times, but what the hell.

I am currently building a new pc and as far as cpu/mobo and all the rest goes, I know what I want.

However for graphics cards I have no idea to buy the 700 series or to wait for the 800 series. Since I am buying piece by piece considering maximizing my budget, I am buying them somewhere October/November. Its mostly a rig thats going to be used for BF4 in ultra with multiple monitor setup. (Was considering SLI 770gtx 4Gb cards)

Atm I have a DuoCore E6750/8gb on a Striker Extreme mobo with a Asus Gts450 so it will be a huge step forward. (And yes I am a bit of a Asus fanboy for years, never had any problems with their products and therefor staying there aswell, although I cant find a gtx7704gb asus card on amazon anymore 🙁 )

^ around that time 800 series might already on shelves. expected official launch is in mid september with actual hardware availability in late september/late october. also reference design for 880/870 was expected to have 4GB of VRAM minimum.

What do you mean by 'not compatible with legacy BIOS'? Also 700 series and 600 series are based on the same Kepler architecture. 770 is just an overclocked 680. The 780 is using different chip than 770/680 but it is still the same kepler architecture.

I read an semi-official article from Gamescom. The full 800 series is slated around spring 2016 with the off chance of the flagship being released earlier. I would buy the 780 6gb right now if you're in any need of a card. You could be waiting quite awhile, even if the 800 series comes out you can literally turn around and sell the 780 for like 400+ dollars and put a little extra in for the 880.

2016!!! Seriously!!! lol that's even worse than the kdramastars false rumors..

2015 my apologies lol. I don't think that the article is official word or anything, but take into account that supposedly 20nm process isn't ready for awhile and a bunch of reports of March 2015 AND the fact that Nvidia usually releases new GPUs in the spring (at least the past couple generations) I don't think it's farfetched or unreasonable at all. Believe what you want, wait if you want, no point in waiting when you can just sell your last gen card and upgrade for like 200 next spring.

If you had something like the 780 6gb or a 780 ti, I don't even think 350-400 would be out of the question to resell on ebay in march 2015. Those cards will still be able to play all new games very well.

They aren't releasing the 880 series on 20nm, its coming out on 28nm for a quicker release apparently.

I would have thought the 20nm die shrink will be for the 900 series.

I heard that too, but it would definitely be coming out very soon if that were the case. It's been way over a year now since the 700 series came out, what's the reason for the delay?

same here. but it make me think about Pascal. Pascal was supposed to debut in 2016 using TSMC 16 FinFet. so 20nm in 2015 and then jumping to 16nm FinFet in 2016? seems unlikely when both nvidia and AMD are stuck with 28nm for almost three years now. but i heard TSMC 16nm FinFet actually is still the same 20nm process but only with FinFet though they did not called it as 20nm FinFet.

apart from TSMC was very late with the new node the competitor (AMD) haven't put much of a fight either. it is almost two year before AMD come up with Hawaii. and unlike top to bottom new chip like it always do when AMD introduce new series only 290X/290 is truly new. everything else is direct rebrand of 7k series. AMD are going to launch new card very soon but it is not new flagship. instead it is a new card (Tonga) is to replace the aging Tahiti. Tonga performance was rumored to be around 280X/280 performance but with much lower power consumption.

Yeah I think the 28nm 800 series will be out before the end of 2014.

I'm just saying we haven't heard a peep from Nvidia to be honest. You would think if they are just going to put it on 28nm it wouldn't be very difficult as they already released the 750ti using maxwell. Also, consider this every other line of cards from Nvidia has been completely new architecture. So, like the 700 series was a revamped 600 series. SO the 800 series will be an entirely new architexture based on maxwell they might as well just wait until the new year so they can get 20nm process on there. It's not like games are struggling on 700 series cards at all anyways.

700 series wasnt entirely revamped 600, the 780/780ti/Titan etc were "Big kepler" GK110.

Well you say they arent struggling, but they are if you try and play at 4k, which is getting more popular. Plus, AMD arent sitting still when it comes to GPUs, so nvidia wont wait too long.

Yes, you can actually get a 4k monitor for under $500 dollars, which is pretty insane. The problem, besides the lack of graphical power, is that windows and games have really poor support for it. Both can normally run the resolution, but the interface scaling is way off and you end up with super tiny unreadable interface elements. I would guess that the 900 series will be the first group of cards that can truly support 4k at any capacity when you're talking a single GPU configuration.

For anyone coming here to see if they should upgrade now or wait for the 800 series. I would say wait! If your card is good enough or looking to get a deal, it would be best to just wait another month or so for nVidia to release these. Once the 8s drop, the prices on the 700 series will go down a good 50-100 dollars on the major cards to clean out stock. I currently have a 7970 so since it isn't that bad, I'm just going to wait it out and see the actual specs of the 800s and see if its worth it. If not, I'll just have to get a 780Ti anddd maybe SLI them.

Never a good idea to wait on tech if you have a need/strong want. If you bought a top of the line right now you could literally turn around and sell it for 80% of what it's worth if you had to upgrade to a "hypothetical" 800 series fall release date.

Well if you have a strong need/want, there obviously will be no fighting it. Like I said, I have a pretty decent GPU as it is so I do not "Need" to upgrade. Do I want to? Yes, but I'm the person who likes to see the legitimate specs of a product. If they are worth the difference, then I will pick it up. If the specs aren't that big of a difference, I'll buy the previous gen for cheaper rather than buying it at what it is now. So if you need to upgrade, do it, if you really want to upgrade, do it.

News from around 30 minutes ago:

So a few sites are reporting that NVIDIA will skip the 800 series and target 900 directly. They're also saying the cards will launch in mid-September. http://videocardz.com/51426/nvidia-to-skip-geforce-800-series-geforce-gtx-980-and-gtx-970-mid-september

On to my question: I'm on the verge of upgrading to a GTX770 from my current GTX460. Anything more expensive than the 770 is out of my budget. Should I wait for the new cards or just go ahead with my purchase? Note that I'm in India so any price drop triggered in the 700 series by a new release will probably take some time to reflect in local stores, which means I'm looking at a longer delay than customers in US if I decide to wait it out. :

:so confused:
